The Education Commission (1964-66) observed, "The destiny of India is being shaped in her classrooms" and that 'as is the teacher, so is the nation' to emphasize about the importance of the teachers. Book excerpt: A growing body of research suggests that low job satisfaction among teachers may lead to undesired consequences for educators, students, and communities. The greatest impact appears to be a high rate of attrition among teachers, which is growing (NCTAF, 2007). Teacher effectiveness, teacher retention, and student achievement can be directly impacted and correlated to teacher satisfaction with the job or the extent of satisfaction teachers feel concerning the teaching profession. The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of teacher job satisfaction in rural schools in a western state, as well as to attempt to reveal specific factors that lead to job satisfaction in education. Data was gathered utilizing the Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS), created by Dr. Paul Spector (1985). The JSS assesses job satisfaction in nine subscales including pay, promotion, supervision, nature of work, operating conditions, coworkers, communication, fringe benefits, and contingent rewards. Each of the nine subscales can be classified as either an extrinsic or intrinsic satisfier, as noted by Herzberg et al. (1959). The two subscales of extrinsic satisfaction means and intrinsic satisfaction means served as the dependent variables in the study. The independent variables were the ten demographic characteristics provided by respondents to the JSS and included gender, age, ethnicity, marital status, highest level of education, elementary or secondary level of teaching, type of community where the teacher grew up, salary, years of experience, and the number of schools in which the teacher has been employed. Multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVAs) were conducted on the independent and dependent variables in order to answer the research questions and to understand if any significant differences existed among the variables. The two dependent variables in this study were the extrinsic and intrinsic mean scale scores from the JSS. If differences were indicated by MANOVA tests, follow up post hoc analyses were conducted to detail where the differences were found. No significant differences were found for the independent variables of gender, ethnicity, type of community where the teacher grew up, and number schools in which the teacher had been employed. Significant differences were found for the independent variables of age, highest level of education, elementary and secondary grade level taught, years of teaching experience, and salary. Rural schoolteachers in the age category of 21-30 with the level of education of obtaining a Bachelor Degree, making a salary of $30,000-$40,000, and from 0-5 years teaching experience expressed higher intrinsic and extrinsic job satisfaction than older, more educated teachers with more income and more experience in the teaching field. Teachers in all demographic categories expressed higher intrinsic satisfaction with the job than extrinsic. These findings were remarkably similar across all five school districts where the JSS was conducted.

Dissatisfaction with the workplace can be a strong incentive to seek alternative opportunities. This study focuses on the role played by job satisfaction, morale and HIV/AIDS in educator attrition. The responses of educators who considered leaving their jobs were compared to the responses of those preferring to stay. Findings reveal that job dissatisfaction linked to poor salaries and limited possibilities for career development, as well as the lack of status and respect attached to the profession, may push educators out of the classroom. The low morale amongst potential leavers reflects this dissatisfaction, as well as the stress caused by curriculum transformation and the emotional impact of HIV/AIDS. Factors encouraging educators to stay in their profession included their passion for developing young people and strong collegial relationships. However, many also feel trapped by limited job alternatives, and may embark on withdrawal options such as increased absenteeism or lower outputs. It is crucially important to deal with the sources of educator frustration, lest the result becomes deteriorating service provision and quality in South African education.

What factors or influences direct an individual's choice of degree? Are there critical influences that affect decision-making? Can one predict with some degree of certainty that an individual will select a particular graduate degree? Questions such as these have presented a challenge to members of the Missouri Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Education Council. The purpose was to examine the different demographic variables related to current Family and Consumer Sciences teachers who have a graduate degree. This study helped identify the reasons why Family and Consumer Sciences teachers select the graduate degree programs they complete, as well as assess the job satisfaction level of these same teachers. Usable date were provided by 59 teachers who held an advanced teaching certificate and/or a graduate degree during the summer of 2003. Five research questions and three null hypotheses were framed to guide the study. Data analysis procedures included the use of analysis of variance and regression. The first part of data collection employed the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (1967). The MSQ is an inventory that evaluates the degree to which needs and values are satisfied by an individual's job. The second part of the data collection utilized the Graduate Degree Data form which was created by the researcher. Based on the findings of this study, Missouri Family and Consumer Sciences teachers are satisfied with their current job and graduate degree. There was no significant difference in job satisfaction or perceptions about professional development when analyzed by type (teaching and other) of graduate degree received. The more involved teachers were in professional organizations, the more teachers reported they knew about curriculum issues in Family and Consumer Sciences. This in turn will impact the overall quality of education that is provided by the teachers who are active in their professional organizations. Teachers represent the core of the educational system. The retention of quality teachers who can provide current content and competent methods of teaching should be the goal of every educational system. School systems can improve the quality of the education provided by encouraging teachers to become active in their professional organizations and to implement proactive changes in their content area.
