Book Pigs Profits and Rural Communities

Download or read book Pigs Profits and Rural Communities written by Kendall M. Thu and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1998-07-23 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illuminates the processes and consequences of agricultural industrialization, particularly within the swine production industry, for the social, economic, human, environmental, and political health of the rural United States. Contributors come from widely divergent backgrounds including a former U.S. senator, farmers, a veterinarian, a medical psychologist, an agricultural economist, a biological ecologist, a farm organization president, and anthropologists. Set within the theoretical framework of Walter Goldschmidt's research on the community consequences of industrialized food production, these contributions show that the increasing divergence of ownership has real human costs that continue to be ignored by economic developers and policymakers.

Book Swine Production and Nutrition

Download or read book Swine Production and Nutrition written by Wilson G. Pond and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-11-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this text as stated in the preface to our book "Swine Production in Temperate and Tropical Environments," 1974, is to provide a technical basis for successful production of pork in both temperate and tropical environments. The competitive position of pork as a food source both in the developed and developing countries has continued to be strengthened during the past 1 0 years. In this book, we update the current knowledge and technology upon which pork production is based-covering extensively the new knowledge of feeds and their nutrient values. The current growth of the world swine population is faster than that of the human population, reflecting the high demand for pork among consumers in all parts of the world. Advances in genetics, physiology, nutrition, and bio technology have permitted continued improvements in efficiency of pork produc tion, and prospects are bright for continued advances. The principles of modem production technology addressed in this book provide the basis for application by the swine industry in a broad range of environmental and economic settings. We have attempted to present a balanced coverage of the biological, economic, and husbandry aspects of swine production for use by college and university students, personnel in the feed and food industries, livestock extension specialists, and commercial swine producers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Feed efficiency in swine' has been prepared as a comprehensive treatise on the current state of our understanding of this topic which is so important to the pork industry. Each chapter is written by international authorities who understand both the science and application of their topic area. The book provides detailed insight into the many factors affecting feed efficiency, ranging from diet processing to herd health, from nutrition to physiology and from day-to-day barn management to the adoption of advanced technologies. The authors explain such practical aspects as the challenge of interpreting feed efficiency information obtained on farm or the role of liquid feeding. The authors also delve into more scientific topics such as amino acid or energy metabolism or animal physiology. This book is written for people who have a technical interest in pork production, including nutritionists, geneticists, farm management specialists, veterinarians, other academics and, of course, pork producers.

Book Pig Prodution in Brasil an Analysis of the Key Variables

Download or read book Pig Prodution in Brasil an Analysis of the Key Variables written by J.M. Acworth and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two month period was spent in Brasil during the Summer of 1987 studing general aspects of the pig prodution industry. A review of the literature assesses the major factors likely to be limiting biological performance of a growing pig in a tropical country, such as climate; nutririon and genotype. Health and reproductive performance are also majorvariables restricting developmed of the pig production industry but whilst they cannot be ignored, they are not covered in any detail for the purpose of this study. For each of the variables considered, the fundamental elements of pig physiology are discussed and the causative forces behind observed responses of pigs tropical environments are analyzed. It is concluded that at the lowest level, the rules that control biological inter-relationships in the pig are universal. An analysis of the production parameters and structure of the pig industry in industry in Brasil reveals that in addition to biological constraints, the economic environment seriously restricts the financial performance thefinancial performance of all but the most advanced production units. Three experiments are then set up using the Edinburg "Model Pig" to simulate pig response to various management strategies, such as diet selection, feed rationing, and genetic improvement and whilst the results may not be used to draw specific conclusions about suitable strategie for brazilian pig production, it is considered that useful conclusionsas to a suitable management "methodology" can be made. The need for recommendations made using deductive reasoning rather than empirical evidence is paramount where a large range of ambient and economic environment exist. Even then, such recommendations are not resilient to the fluctuating environment and must be continualy reassessed. In conclusion, while the reasons for the slow development and generally low levels of productivity in Brasil are plain to see, solutions should not be suggested on a universal basis and there is a need for large scale, decentralised extension of current understanding to the individual producers operating under a wide range of different conditions. Adoption of "standard practise", in Brasil, introduces a whole set of problems not generaly encountered in the countries it would like to ape.
