  • Publisher : Princeton Architectural Press
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 338 pages

Download or read book LA s Early Moderns written by Victoria Dailey and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galka Scheyer, Walter and Louise Arensberg, Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler, Will Connell, Lloyd Wright, Norman Bel Geddes, Edward Weston, John Cage, Anais Nin, Jake Zeitlin, Merle Armitage, Harriet and Sam Freeman, and several dozen other artists and designers--this was a circle, not just a loose network of acquaintances. The modernist pioneers of Los Angeles art and architecture made statements in their work and legacies, but they were every bit as much a community as they were individual satellites of expression. These people gathered in solidarity, they met as friends and lovers, and they shared excitement over their important breaks with tradition. In modest but lasting ways, they changed Los Angeles forever. There is history in that, and there is inspiration as well. This book is about a secret Los Angeles, a Los Angeles filled with optimism about a different kind of "city of the future."

Book Literature and Architecture in Early Modern England

Download or read book Literature and Architecture in Early Modern England written by Anne M. Myers and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our built environment inspires writers to reflect on the human experience, discover its history, or make it up. Buildings tell stories. Castles, country homes, churches, and monasteries are “documents” of the people who built them, owned them, lived and died in them, inherited and saved or destroyed them, and recorded their histories. Literature and Architecture in Early Modern England examines the relationship between sixteenth- and seventeenth-century architectural and literary works. By becoming more sensitive to the narrative functions of architecture, Anne M. Myers argues, we begin to understand how a range of writers viewed and made use of the material built environment that surrounded the production of early modern texts in England. Scholars have long found themselves in the position of excusing or explaining England’s failure to achieve the equivalent of the Italian Renaissance in the visual arts. Myers proposes that architecture inspired an unusual amount of historiographic and literary production, including poetry, drama, architectural treatises, and diaries. Works by William Camden, Henry Wotton, Ben Jonson, Andrew Marvell, George Herbert, Anne Clifford, and John Evelyn, when considered as a group, are texts that overturn the engrained critical notion that a Protestant fear of idolatry sentenced the visual arts and architecture in England to a state of suspicion and neglect.

Book Early Architecture in New Mexico

Download or read book Early Architecture in New Mexico written by Bainbridge Bunting and published by Albuquerque : University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 1976 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lavishly illustrated account of sixteen hundred years of New Mexico's architectural history is the first comprehensive treatment of the subject. Emphasizing secular buildings, noted architectural historian Bainbridge Bunting begins by describing the fourth-century pithouses of the Basket Makers and goes on to examine the buildings of the Pueblo Indians and the architecture of the Spanish Colonial, Mexican, and Territorial New Mexican periods. His discussion of Pueblo buildings covers material rarely dealt with in the study of architecture. Bunting makes the reader aware not only of the evolutionary process in New Mexico architecture, but also of the strong sense of continuity that characterizes it. Although such events as the American takeover of the area in 1848 and the arrival of the railroad in 1880 led to major modifications in New Mexico's architectural repertoire, pre-American and pre-Hispanic styles have survived as dominant architectural models. The result of twenty-five years of research, this book grew out of a series of lectures delivered in 1973 to the Hispanic Preservation Division of the Graduate School of Architecture and Planning of Columbia University. It will appeal not only to architects and historians but to general readers interested in touring or in duplicating examples of New Mexico's rich architectural heritage.--Cover

It contains a variety of information on Greek and Roman buildings, as well as prescriptions for the planning and design of military camps, cities, and structures both large (aqueducts, buildings, baths, harbours) and small (machines, measuring devices, instruments). De Architectura - Volume I goes into subjects such as town planning and general architecture, the qualifications required of an architect, the building materials, the Temples and the different orders of architecture (includes the section on body proportions that led to da Vinci's drawing) and civil buildings (baths, palæstra, etc.) The descriptions are completed with magnificient hand drawn illustrations by Andrea Palladio and Sébastien Leclerc.

Book Venice from the Water

Download or read book Venice from the Water written by Daniel Savoy and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The floating city of Venice has enchanted visitors for centuries with its maze of scenic canals. For this pioneering book, Daniel Savoy set out by boat to explore the built environment of these waterways, gaining new insights into the architectural history of this major early modern Italian center. By viewing the architecture and experience of the canals in relation to the production of Venetian civic mythology, the author found that the waterways of Venice and its lagoon were integral areas of the city's pre-modern urban space, and that their flanking buildings were constructed in an intimate dialogue with the water's visual, spatial, and metaphorical properties. Enhancing the natural wonder of their aquatic setting, the builders of Venice used illusory aesthetic and scenographic practices to create waterfront buildings that appear to float, blend into the water, and glide into view around bends in the canals--transporting visitors into a seemingly otherworldly realm. This book's striking photographs of Venice, as seen from its waterways, will likewise transport readers with breathtaking views of this captivating city.
