Book Routes to Desert Watering Places in the Salton Sea Region California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Routes to Desert Watering Places in the Salton Sea Region California Classic Reprint written by John S. Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Routes to Desert Watering Places in the Salton Sea Region, California This region is by no means devoid of natural resources Or human activity. It contains prosperous cities, fertile agricultural districts, forest clad mountains, a large aggregate number Of watering places, many rich mines, and an unknown wealth of mineral deposits. But the localities that have water supplies are widely separated oases in a vast expanse Of silent, changeless, unproductive desert, whose most impressive feature is its great distances and whose chief evidences of human occupation are the long, long roads that lead from one watering place to another. In the future existing oases will be enlarged, many new ones will be created, and the mineral and agricultural product of the region will be greatly increased. But in spite of all that man can do this large region will remain essentially a desert. Travelers in this region must depend for their existence on the desert water holes (springs, wells, or natural tanks), many of which are separated from one another by a hard day's journey with team and wagon. For most of the region the water h'oles have never been accurately mapped or described, no systematic provision has been made for maintaining them, and the roads leading to them have not been marked with Substantial and reliable signs. Hence travel in the remote parts of the region has been a precarious and some times a dangerous' undertaking.2 routes TO desert watering' places. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irrigation in California (Southern): The Field, Water-Supply, and Works, Organization and Operation in San Diego, San Bernardino and Los Angeles Counties Governor: There is handed to you with this letter the Second Part of my Report on Irrigation. You will find in its preface and introduction some explanations for which I bespeak your attention. In the former volume, "Irrigation Development," acknowledgment has been made of the intelligent cooperation and courteous action of some of your predecessors. Short as was Governor Bartlett's term, I feel that his memory should fully as much be connected herewith as that of a patron and helper to the end. Of yourself in this connection, it is not too much to say that, after all, whatever of good or value may come out of my work has been saved to the people of California by you, and I sincerely hope you will receive from the people due recognition therefor. I heartily thank you for your manly and unprejudiced attitude towards this work, and for your uniform kindly confidence in me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ground Waters and Irrigation Enterprises in the Foothill Belt, Southern California Obviously a resource which has become so important to the con tinned welfare of so rich a district is worthy of careful study. Such a study is now under way, and its results are being made known through a number of water-supply papers that are being issued by the United States Geological Survey. The earliest of these to be prepared for distribution were a series of three (nos 137, 138, and 139) relating to the coastal plain which lies between the Coast Range and the Pacific Ocean. These papers did not embody close geologic determinations, but were rather records of the developments of underground waters which had taken place at the time of their issue, with some discussion of the effects of those developments in the region treated in them.
