Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fungoid and Insect, Pests of the Farm This book has been written for those who wish to acquire some practical knowledge of farm and garden pests. It does not aim at dealing with all the numerous diseases which affect crops but rather at giving an accurate account of some of the commoner forms. It is hoped that a working knowledge of these pests will be of great commercial value to farmers and market gardeners, and also that by their own observations they will be enabled to cooperate with those who are engaged in studying plant diseases in finding the most economical means of preventing the increasing annual losses due to these pests. Direct cures of some of the diseases are unknown; but even in these cases an accurate knowledge of the enemy will enable us to carry out remedial measures which will prevent big losses. Figs. 29, 31 b, 32, 34 a, 36 a, 37, 48, 49, and 50 are taken from Curtis's Farm Insects. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Insect Pests of Farm Garden and Orchard Classic Reprint

Download or read book Insect Pests of Farm Garden and Orchard Classic Reprint written by Ezra Dwight Sanderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Pests of Farm, Garden and Orchard The edition of the writer's Insects Injurious to Staple Crops, first published ten years ago, having been exhausted, the publishers requested a revision. It was found, however, that the advances in economic entomology during the past decade were such that it was necessary practically to rewrite the book. At the time it was first published two other books were projected; one to deal with the insects affecting garden crops, and the other to discuss those affecting fruits. Pressure of regular work pre vented the author from completing the manuscript for these works and in 1907 Dr. Chittenden issued his excellent book on Insects Injurious to Vegetables, so that there seemed to be no immediate demand for another volume on that subject. At the same time two other well-known entomologists were work ing upon books which would cover fruit insects, so that the writer abandoned the field to them. Subsequently, the work of one of these friends was cut short by his sudden death, and the other abandoned the task, at least for the present. Under these circumstances, it seemed that there was a distinct place for a book to cover all the insects affecting the crops of farm, garden and orchard, and having leisure to devote to it, the author developed the work in its present form. Book excerpt: "Only those who live in the country are aware how much the success of cultivators, whether of farm or garden crops, depends upon insects. There is a surprising lack of knowledge among otherwise well educated people as to the life history of even the most common insects. The questions asked, not only by those in my immediate neighborhood, but by letters from all parts of the country, show how slight is the popular knowledge on this most important branch of Natural History. In view of this, and to bring a knowledge of the most destructive insects within reach of all, this volume has been prepared." - Preface.

Download or read book Observations of Injurious Insects and Common Farm Pests written by Eleanor an Ormerod and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-23 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations of Injurious Insects and Common Farm Pests: During the Year 1899, With Methods of Prevention and Remedy During the past season reports of observation of a great variety of insect infestations were forwarded, many of these being of our ordinary farm and orchard pests, but some also which had been little previously noticed, and of others details of habits, or of preventive measures, were contributed, serviceable for completing previous notices. The only crop attack, however, which was mentioned as seriously prevalent was that of Turnip Flea-beetle. The caterpillars of Cabbage Butter ies (as in the previous season) did a good deal of damage locally; and for about six to eight weeks from May 2oth much application was sent for lea ets on Wireworm, sometimes amounting to five or six applications daily. Some infestations which are often seriously injurious were little reported - as Surface Caterpillars to root crops; and Mangold-leaf Fly maggots; orchard caterpillars (including amongst them those of the Winter Moth) were little noticed the caterpillars of the Gooseberry and Currant Moth and Saw y were also little mentioned. Amongst field crop attacks, some addition to previous in formation was noted in regard to different kinds of Pear-shaped Weevils at Clover seed-heads. Amongst Corn attacks, some of the well-known kinds - as those of the maggots of Oat Frit Fly, Wheat-bulb Fly, and Corn Saw y within Wheat stems - were just enough reported to show they were not absent, as also Hessian Fly in Wheat in one locality, and I would most particularly desire to draw the attention of agriculturists (in case of this infestation occurring again in the country) to the notes given at p. 39, on the importance of destroying infested screenings with the contained chrysalids, the ao-called Flax seeds. With regard to insect infestation in our, whether as a generally spread home trouble in mills, &c., or in imports, the communications were on a much larger and graver scale than in any preceding year, and I have especially drawn attention to details connected with the Mediterranean Mill Moth in a paper under that heading, pp. 76 - 92. Amongst Hop observations a good working observation was given of possibility of broadscale trapping of the Click Beetles (the parents of the Wireworms); also notes of Hop Flea Beetle on the leafage, helped to give some additions needed to connect this attack in summer with that of the maggots later on in the Hop cones. Very little wasiv preface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reports of Observations of Injurious Insects and Common Farm Pests: During the Year 1884, With Methods of Prevention and Remedy Before submitting the observations of the past season to the contributors to whose kind assistance I am indebted for the information, I beg to offer my best thanks for their courteous co-operation, and to request its continuance. I wish also to offer my thanks for the assistance cordially rendered by the press. It will be noticed that the observations have now been extended in some degree to insects affecting cattle and farm stock, and a slight corresponding alteration has been made in the title of the Report. During the eight years in which our crop insects have been reported on, such full observation has been sent in of some of the regular yearly attacks that it seems to leave but little more to say with regard to these; but there are some points which are shown constantly and plainly still to want attention as the very starting-points of a large part of our yearly attacks, and one of these is treatment of grass and clover-lea before breaking up. Half or more of the ravages of the Wireworm and Daddy Longlegs grubs arise from these being in the land before the new crop is put in, and any notes of treatment to prevent egg-laying, or of applications or treatment to destroy the grubs in breaking up the land, would be very acceptable, as tending to lessen one great source of loss. Warble Fly injury to our cattle, and Liver Fluke to our sheep, are two other important subjects. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Insect Pests and Plant Diseases

Download or read book Insect Pests and Plant Diseases written by British Columbia Agriculture Department and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Pests and Plant Diseases: Containing Remedies and Suggestions Recommended for Adoption by Farmers, Fruit-Growers, and Gardeners of the Province There is probably no one general method by which the farmer or fruit-grower can do more to protect his crops from insect injury than by clean culture. A large proportion of injurious insects pass the winter under rubbish of many sorts, and the burning of this will destroy them. It is a safe rule, whenever a crop is gathered, to clear off the remnant-s and destroy them as completely as possible. In orchards this recommendation is Of special value. In dead wood on the trees, or on the ground, many species hide or complete their development during the winter. Every dead branch or twig should be cut, and with other rubbish taken out and burned. Loose' bark is of little or no value to a tree, while it affords shelter to many hibernating species. Never leave an Old wood-pile near an orchard. Many insects breed preferably in dead wood, but when it becomes too dry or rotten, they have a sharp instinct that enables them to discover a weak or sickly tree, and this they may attack and ruin, where otherwise it might recover. Fallen or diseased fruit should always be destroyed or fed to hogs. Field and orchard should contain, as nearly as possible, nothing save the crop, and certainly neither rubbish nor remnants. For field crops, a thorough system of crop rotation prevents the multiplication of many insect pests and plant diseases. It is a well established general rule that plants or trees are better able to resist insect attack when in a thrifty growing condition than when weak in vitality; consequently, such fertilisation as will bring about the healthiest growth is desirable. It has long been Observed that some varieties of fruits, vegetables and grains are more subject to insect attacks than others. Consequently, other things being equal, it is advisable to select such varieties for planting. Of mechanical methods, the simplest way of dealing with many insects, is to pick them off by hand; in the garden and home grounds, caterpillars of most kinds may be easily dealt with so, or their nests destroyed, in the case of those having such. Book Injurious Insects and Useful Birds Successful Control of Farm Pests Classic Reprint

Download or read book Injurious Insects and Useful Birds Successful Control of Farm Pests Classic Reprint written by F. L. Washburn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Injurious Insects and Useful Birds, Successful Control of Farm Pests This book has been written in the hope of supplying the needs of high school where Agriculture is taught, and of Agricultural Colleges which demand a good text-book that is not too technical, and where the work embraces a large field in which there is a call for practical information and suggestions. It is intended also to supply farmers, orchardists, vegetable growers, owners of gardens, and housekeepers with a reference book for guidance in a campaign against injurious insects and four-footed pests of the farm, and to assist them in obtaining information about some of our more common birds in their relation to agriculture. The widespread and growing interest in this latter group of animals is not to be disregarded. The suggestions contained herein are largely the results of twenty-one years of work in Economic Entomology on the part of the author. Yet in so large a field one must of necessity have recourse to much experience not his own, and the author has not hesitated to obtain desired information from many reliable publications; such as bulletins and circulars from the United States Department of Agriculture, bulletins from the Geneva and the Cornell stations, and from all sections of the country. Many illustrations are from Minnesota State publications. I have also been favored by the kindness of others who have loaned their cuts. Courtesies of this kind, which are hereby gratefully acknowledged, have been extended by the Bureau of Entomology, United States Department of Agriculture; P. J. Parrott, of the New York (Geneva) station; Dr. G. W. Herrick, of the Cornell station; the California station; Professor G. H. Dean, of Kansas; C.P. Gillette, of Colorado; R. A. Cooley, of Montana; W. C. O'Kane, of New Hampshire; H. A. Morgan, of Tennessee; W. E. Britton, of Connecticut; and the Ohio station. For figures 324 and 326 the author is indebted to the Country Gentleman. Some illustrations of spraying apparatus were obtained from the Barnes Company and the Goulds Manufacturing Company. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Observations of Injurious Insects and Common Farm Pests, During the Year 1892: With Methods of Prevention and Remedy Tee year 1892 was remarkable for most of the insect infesta tions commonly injurious to field crops and fruit, being present to such an extent as to cause enquiry as to their nature and methods of prevention, but, for the most part, as not affecting large districts to a serious extent. Amongst such crop attacks as were more especially prevalent and injurious, were those of the leaf-eating Pea Weevils, of which the detailed reports Show amount Of damage up to the sweeping Off Of successive sowings and, over areas of various extent, up to serious mischief over a district of 1000 acres. The caterpillars Of the very common silver-y Moth caused unusual damage in various places to Clover; and the Hop Strig Maggot was again mischievous. Mangold crops in many places had (as has been repeatedly the case of late years) again to bear the brunt of sharp attack Of Leaf Maggot. Corn Aphis (so far as information sent in showed) was the most injurious corn insect attack Of the season. Diamond-back Moth presence was widely noticed, and in some localities (perhaps most of all on the north easterly parts of Norfolk, and near St. Andrew's, in Scotland) as being observable in great numbers but compared to the outbreak Of 1891 little caterpillar attack followed, so that serious damage only occurred locally, not as a widespread scourge. Various kinds of root attacks to Turnips and Cabbage (duly entered on) also caused trouble. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Report of Observations of Injurious Insects and Common Farm Pests During the Year 1897

This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Observations of Injurious Insects and Common Farm Pests, During the Year 1897: With Methods of Prevention and Remedy; Twenty-First Report During the year 1897, as in the recently preceding years, we had not presence of any one special crop attack spreading widely over the country; but the ordinary infestations were mostly present, and in the case of orchard or fruit crops some of the infestations were unusually troublesome. In the absence of any generally prevalent drought in May, the general prevalence of orchard and Oak-leaf caterpillars, which caused such severe damage in the two preceding years, was little reported; but the weather influences of the continued mild winter are keeping presence of some of the crop attacks in activity to a degree which may require attention. From specimens sent me only a few weeks ago, maggot is present unusually early in the young Wheat plant; the very injurious caterpillars of the Small Swift Moth, which feed on different kinds of roots, are also at work and in Clover I have more than usual presence of maggots of the Glover and Pea-leaf Weevil at the roots, and of Eelworm Stem-sickness. In the case of the Wheat and of the Stem-sick Clover, it would be so very desirable to be on the alert to apply (where needed) the requisite dressings, that I just mention what is going forward now, although the observations extend beyond those of 1897. Amongst some of the special points of enquiry during the past year, more than usual attention has been given to imported insect infestations in Corn and Flour; and amongst Turnip attacks, the appearance of the Diamond-back Moth at various North British localities, rather late in the past season, suggests that it would be desirable to be on the watch presently to check the very first signs of presence of the pest. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Observations of Injurious Insects and Common Farm Pests During the Year 1885: With Methods of Prevention and Remedy IN once again submitting my Annual Report, I have, as in previous years, to offer my hearty thanks, both to the many friends who have kindly aided me by their communications, and also to the Agricultural Press for the great assistance that their support gives to the subject of prevention of farm insects, and the encouragement which the courteous assistance they grant gives to myself in the work. The chief features of the insect attacks of the past season have been the great amount of Aphides or Plant Lice, which swarmed on most crops in consequence of the long drought being favourable to their increase. Surface-caterpillars also were unusually destructive throughout the autumn, and but for the snow, which in melting brings wet alternately with frost to bear on them (a state of things especially destructive to them), a further visitation was to be expected this spring. Some kinds of injurious crop insects, not previously noticed in these Reports, have been brought forward, and amongst various notes of habits, means of prevention, &c., which have been reported, I wish particularly to draw attention to the observation at p. 21 on absence of injury from Daddy Longlegs grubs where the land was thoroughly trampled by cattle. The observations of each year show more and more the importance of autumn measures to destroy, in embryo, the pests that, if left alone, raise (as a regularly recurring loss and trouble) the various attacks which devastate cr0ps sown after broken-up pasture.
