Book The Post Mortem Vindication of Jesus in the Sayings Gospel Q

Download or read book The Post Mortem Vindication of Jesus in the Sayings Gospel Q written by Daniel A. Smith and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2007-01-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Q 13:34-35, the Jerusalem Logion, aligns the rejection of the speaker by Jerusalem both with the abandonment of Jerusalem's house and with the future invisibility and return of the speaker: 'You will not see me until you say, Blessed is the Coming One in the name of the Lord' (13:35b). The coincidence of not seeing language with a reference to a future coming is reminiscent of the connection, in Jewish literature especially, between the assumption and eschatological function. The book proposes that this reference to Jesus' assumption is a clue to how Q conceives of the post-mortem vindication of Jesus, since numerous Q sayings presuppose a knowledge of Jesus' death. In support of this, the book argues that in Hellenistic Jewish writings assumption was not always considered to be an escape from death (as in the biblical instances of Enoch and Elijah), but could happen at or after death, as was more clearly the case in Greek thought. Such a strategy of vindication is necessary for Q because it evidences a belief in Jesus' ongoing existence and future return as the Son of Man, and because resurrection though a feature of Q's eschatology is not individually applied to Jesus. A similar view is presupposed by the pre-Markan empty tomb tradition, which describes the disappearance of Jesus' body but narrates neither the resurrection itself nor an appearance of the risen Jesus. The book also draws out implications of the thesis for the place of the Sayings Gospel Q within the early Christian movements, particularly vis-vis the vindication of Jesus.

Book A Study of Petrine Christology from Key Texts in 2 Peter

Download or read book A Study of Petrine Christology from Key Texts in 2 Peter written by Kelly Adair Seely and published by Wipf and Stock. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second Peter is full of christological language. Scholars have often overlooked the christological richness as they have focused heavily on the issues of eschatology and authorship. The uniqueness of the Son from the Father as well as the divinity of Jesus are at the forefront of the short epistle. Further, Ernst Kasemann famously criticized 2 Peter for being void of Christology and the cross, and thus the gospel. The author analyzes the Christology of 2 Peter, particularly as it relates to the Petrine view of the divinity of Jesus and the distinctness and uniqueness of the Son from the Father. This study examines the christological depth in these key areas as a response to critics like Kasemann. Kasemann first looked into the eschatological arguments of 2 Peter and claimed he was not able to find any christological orientation. The student of 2 Peter must not look through eschatology to see the rich Christology which fills the verses of the epistle. However, when the reader examines the christological language and themes within 2 Peter, he/she is faced with a beautiful portrayal of Jesus and the Father.

Book The Sayings Gospel Q in Greek and English

Download or read book The Sayings Gospel Q in Greek and English written by James McConkey Robinson and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sayings Gospel Q in Greek and English with Parallels from the Gospels of Mark and Thomas is the outcome of a generation's work by the International Q Project, in reconstructing the collection of sayings ascribed to Jesus (and some to John) that lies behind the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. It thus makes available in a convenient form the most important source for reconstructing the message of Jesus' original Galilean followers, as they proclaimed anew after his death his message of God's reign. Q is, as a result, the most important single source for the study of the historical Jesus. It should be in the hands of every student of theology and of every layperson seriously interested in knowing more about Jesus. This small volume presents, on facing pages, the Greek and English reconstruction of the text of Q. It is in a simplified and more readable format than its original massive publication of 1990, The Critical Edition of Q: Synopsis including the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, Mark and Thomas with English, German and French Translations of Q and Thomas, edited by James M. Robinson, Paul Hoffmann, and John S. Kloppenborg, Managing Editor Milton C. Moreland, at Peeters and Fortress Press.

Book Jewish Philosophical Polemics Against Christianity in the Middle Ages With a New Introduction

Download or read book Jewish Philosophical Polemics Against Christianity in the Middle Ages With a New Introduction written by Daniel J. Lasker and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-26 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This meticulously researched study is based on a comprehensive reading of all the major Jewish sources from the Geonic period in the ninth century until the dawn of the Haskalah in the late eighteenth century. Its clearly written and carefully documented exposition of the philosophical arguments used by Jews to refute four central doctrines of Christianity (trinity, incarnation, transubstantiation, and virgin birth) makes a major contribution to a relatively neglected area of medieval Jewish intellectual history.

Book Essays on the Context Nature and Influence of Isaac Newton s Theology

Download or read book Essays on the Context Nature and Influence of Isaac Newton s Theology written by J.E. Force and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays is the fruit of about fifteen years of discussion and research by James Force and me. As I look back on it, our interest and concern with Newton's theological ideas began in 1975 at Washington University in St. Louis. James Force was a graduate student in philosophy and I was a professor there. For a few years before, I had been doing research and writing on Millenarianism and Messianism in the 17th and 18th centuries, touching occasionally on Newton. I had bought a copy of Newton's Observations upon the Prophecies of Daniel, and the Apocalypse of St. John for a few pounds and, occasionally, read in it. In the Spring of 1975 I was giving a graduate seminar on Millenarian and Messianic ideas in the development of modem philosophy. Force was in the seminar. One day he came very excitedly up to me and said he wanted to write his dissertation on William Whiston. At that point in history, the only thing that came to my mind about Whiston was that he had published a, or the, standard translation of Josephus (which I also happened to have in my library. ) Force told me about the amazing views he had found in Whiston's notes on Josephus and in some of the few writings he could find in St. Louis by, or about, Whiston, who was Newton's successor as Lucasian Professor of mathematics at Cambridge and who wrote inordinately on Millenarian theology.

Download or read book Misquoting Jesus written by Bart D. Ehrman and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When world-class biblical scholar Bart Ehrman first began to study the texts of the Bible in their original languages he was startled to discover the multitude of mistakes and intentional alterations that had been made by earlier translators. In Misquoting Jesus, Ehrman tells the story behind the mistakes and changes that ancient scribes made to the New Testament and shows the great impact they had upon the Bible we use today. He frames his account with personal reflections on how his study of the Greek manuscripts made him abandon his once ultraconservative views of the Bible. Since the advent of the printing press and the accurate reproduction of texts, most people have assumed that when they read the New Testament they are reading an exact copy of Jesus's words or Saint Paul's writings. And yet, for almost fifteen hundred years these manuscripts were hand copied by scribes who were deeply influenced by the cultural, theological, and political disputes of their day. Both mistakes and intentional changes abound in the surviving manuscripts, making the original words difficult to reconstruct. For the first time, Ehrman reveals where and why these changes were made and how scholars go about reconstructing the original words of the New Testament as closely as possible. Ehrman makes the provocative case that many of our cherished biblical stories and widely held beliefs concerning the divinity of Jesus, the Trinity, and the divine origins of the Bible itself stem from both intentional and accidental alterations by scribes -- alterations that dramatically affected all subsequent versions of the Bible.

Book Q the Earliest Gospel

    Book Details:
  • Author : John S. Kloppenborg
  • Publisher : Westminster John Knox Press
  • Release : 2008-10-03
  • ISBN : 161164058X
  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book Q the Earliest Gospel written by John S. Kloppenborg and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2008-10-03 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estimated to date back to the very early Jesus movement, the lost Gospel known as Q offers a distinct and remarkable picture of Jesus and his significance--and one that differs markedly from that offered by its contemporary, the apostle Paul. Q presents Jesus as a prophetic critic of unbelief and a sage with the wisdom that can transform. In Q, the true meaning of the "kingdom of God" is the fulfillment of a just society through the transformation of the human relationships within it. Though this document has never been found, John Kloppenborg offers a succinct account of why scholars maintain it existed in the first place and demonstrates how they have been able to reconstruct its contents and wording from the two later Gospels that used it as a source: Matthew and Luke. Presented here in its entirety, as developed by the International Q Project, this Gospel reveals a very different portrait of Jesus than in much of the later canonical writings, challenging the way we think of Christian origins and the very nature and mission of Jesus Christ.
