Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Beauties of the Seventeenth Century Comparatively speaking, to the task of the judges of a modern living beauty competition, theirs was an easy one, for the feelings of the ladies had not to be taken into account, nor their muscular development and power of retaliation should they be unsuccessful in drawing a prize. So varying are our ideals of beauty that the odds are a jury of twelve picked connoisseurs would never agree. And yet these things are officially settled somehow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travel in England in the Seventeenth Century No more Perhaps not for some who are weighed down with the dross of civilization. But while love of Mother Earth is implanted in the souls of men, there will ever be those whom the manifold beauties of earth and sky will tempt, over the hills and far away, in search of that sudden uprushing and all - pervading emotion that comes to him who gazes upon the grandeurs of nature; that sensation, half rapture, half longing, so typical of this pleasant but transient world of imperfect joys and nebulous desires. Download or read book Life Letters and Epicurean Philosophy of Ninon De L enclos the Celebrated Beauty of the Seventeenth Century Classic Reprint written by Charles Henry Robinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life, Letters, and Epicurean Philosophy of Ninon De L'enclos, the Celebrated Beauty of the Seventeenth Century Decalogue, she is entitled to great consideration because of her faithful observance of the others, not only in their letter but in their spirit, and that her life contains much that is serviceable to human ity, in many more ways than if she had studiously preserved her personal purity to the sacrifice of other qualities, which are of as equal importance as virtues, and as essential to be observed. Another difficulty in the way of establishing her as a model of any kind, on account of her deliberate violations of the sixth precept of the Decalogue, is the fact that she was not of noble birth, held no official position in the government of France, either during the regency or under the reign of Louis XIII, but was a private person, retiring in her hab its, faithful in her liaisons and friendships, delicate and refined in her manners and conversations, and eagerly sought for her wisdom, philosophy, and intellectual ability. Book Alvira the Heroine of Vesuvius

Download or read book Alvira the Heroine of Vesuvius written by A. J. O'Reilly and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alvira, the Heroine of Vesuvius: A Remarkable Sensation of the Seventeenth Century, Founded on Facts Recorded in the Acts of Canonization of St. Francis of Jerome The interesting and instructive character of this sensational narrative, which we cull from the traditions of a past generation, must cover the shortcomings of the pen that has labored to present it in an English dress. We are aware that the propriety of drawing from the oblivion of forgotten literature such a story will be questioned. The decay of the chivalrous spirit of the middle ages, and the prudish, puritanical code of mor ality that has superseded the simple manners of our forefathers, render it hazardous to cast into-the hands of the present generation the thrilling records of sin and repentance such as they were seen and recorded in days gone by. Yet in the midst of a literature professedly false, and which paints in fascinating colors the various phases of unrepented vice and crime, without the redeeming shadows of honor and Christian morality, our little volume must fall a welcome sunbeam. The strange career of our hero ine constitutes a sensational biography charming and beautiful in the moral it presents. Book The Education of Women in the French Literature of the Seventeenth Century Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Education of Women in the French Literature of the Seventeenth Century Classic Reprint written by Rachel Augusta Breathwit and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of Women in the French Literature of the Seventeenth Century One of the most marked influences upon the movement towards woman's education in France may be found in the great body of the women known as the Precieuses. To go back to history*, we find that it was not until the reign Of Francis I that women took their real place in court and commenced to entertain each other and to receive the visits of gentlemen. Henry Iv's entry into court life brought with it a number of rough soldiers fresh from civil wars, accustomed to careless manners and coarse senti ments. Then it was that Mme. De Rambouillet, an italian-french woman of high ideals, unable any longer to bear the rude sensuality of the court, remodeled her home, doing away with all secret tete a-tgts corners, and began to receive her friends in her noted Blue room or salon. The clever and cultivated society which grew up around her salon and others like it became known as that of the precieux. Their avowed purpose was to free the French lan guage of its coarseness, to purify French customs and social life, and to aid in the development of literature. Why is it that this influence had to come from a foreigner and from a lady of the court Was the pure life of the convent, where so many girls received their education, unable to elevate and ennoble French life? No, the convents did not do this, for the simple reason that they did not. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Girls and Women in Classical Greek Religion

Download or read book Girls and Women in Classical Greek Religion written by Matthew Dillon and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has often been thought that participation in fertility rituals was women's most important religious activity in classical Greece. Matthew Dillon's wide-ranging study makes it clear that women engaged in numerous other rites and cults, and that their role in Greek religion was actually more important than that of men. Women invoked the gods' help in becoming pregnant, venerated the god of wine, worshipped new and exotic deities, used magic for both erotic and pain-relieving purposes, and far more besides. Clear and comprehensive, this volume challenges many stereotypes of Greek women and offers unexpected insights into their experience of religion. With more than fifty illustrations, and translated extracts from contemporary texts, this is an essential resource for the study of women and religion in classical Greece.

Book Women and Print Culture Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Women and Print Culture Routledge Revivals written by Kathryn Shevelow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the growth of popular literary forms, particularly the periodical, during the eighteenth century, women began to assume an unprecedented place in print culture as readers and writers. Yet at the same time the very textual practices of that culture inscribed women within an increasingly restrictive and oppressive set of representations. First published in 1989, this title examines the emergence and dramatic growth of periodical literature, showing how the journals solicited women as subscribers and contributors, whilst also attempting to regulate their conduct through the promotion of exemplary feminine types. By enclosing its female readership within a discourse that defined women in terms of love, matrimony, the family, and the home, the English periodical became one of the main linguistic sites for the construction of the eighteenth-century ideology of domestic womanhood. Based on the close scrutiny of the popular periodical press between 1690 and 1760, including journals such as the Athenian Mercury, the Tatler, and the Spectator, this study will be of particular value to any student of the relationship between women and print culture, the development of women’s magazines, and the study of literary audiences.
