Book excerpt: Did the twentieth-century patristic renewal come from nowhere? Was all nineteenth-century theology neo-scholastic? Do theologians’ personal failings invalidate their theologies? These are the questions that guide the contributors to this volume as they reassess the legacy of the so-called Roman School, a nineteenth-century theological network centered in the Jesuit Roman College. Though not entirely uncritical, The Roman College represents a collective effort at sympathetic historical retrieval. It shows how various figures connected to the Roman School—Perrone, Passaglia, Schrader, Franzelin, Newman, Scheeben, and Kleutgen—engaged theologically the problems of their own day and set the stage for later theological renewal.

Book Engaging the Church Fathers in Nineteenth Century Catholic Theology The Patristic Legacy of the Scuola Romana

Download or read book Engaging the Church Fathers in Nineteenth Century Catholic Theology The Patristic Legacy of the Scuola Romana written by Joseph Carola, S.J. and published by Emmaus Academic. This book was released on 2023-06-27 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth-century patristics movement that contributed theologically to the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council is generally well known. Less well known, but no less important, is the similarly dynamic return to the ancient ecclesial sources that took place in nineteenth-century theology, which profoundly shaped the Catholic articulation of the relation of faith and reason, the development of doctrine, the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God, and the nature of the Church. In Engaging the Church Fathers in Nineteenth-Century Catholicism, Joseph Carola, S.J., tracks the theological movement of the Scuola Romana, a contemporaneous, interconnected return to patristic sources pursued by Jesuit theologians at the Roman College—Giovanni Perrone, Carlo Passaglia, Clemens Schrader, and Johann Baptist Franzelin—and their precursors, interlocutors, and intellectual progeny, including the Tübingen theologian Johann Adam Möhler, the Oxonian John Henry Newman, and the Cologne theologian Matthias Joseph Scheeben. Situating these seven theologians’ lives and labors within the broader historical context of nineteenth-century Catholicism, Carola introduces readers to a rich theological world rarely explored, providing both biographical depth and attentive distillation of their writings, methodologies, and impacts. As Carola shows, these extraordinary theologians engaged the Church Fathers and the Church’s entire tradition with intellectual rigor, revitalizing the nineteenth-century Catholic Church at her very heart and providing, in turn, a refined patristic methodology and faithful theological vision that are just as vital for the Church in the twenty-first century as they were in the nineteenth.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Ecclesiology

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Ecclesiology written by Paul Avis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Ecclesiology is a unique scholarly resource for the study of the Christian Church as we find it in the Bible, in history and today. As the scholarly study of how we understand the Christian Church's identity and mission, ecclesiology is at the centre of today's theological research, reflection, and debate. Ecclesiology is the theological driver of the ecumenical movement. The main focus of the intense ecumenical engagement and dialogue of the past half-century has been ecclesiological and this is the area where the most intractable differences remain to be tackled Ecclesiology investigates the Church's manifold self-understanding in relation to a number of areas: the origins, structures, authority, doctrine, ministry, sacraments, unity, diversity, and mission of the Church, including its relation to the state and to society and culture. The sources of ecclesiological reflection are the Bible (interpreted in the light of scholarly research), Church history and the wealth of the Christian theological tradition, together with the information and insights that emerge from other relevant academic disciplines. This Handbook considers the biblical resources, historical development, and contemporary initiatives in ecclesiology. It offers invaluable and comprehensive guide to understanding the Church.

Book Communion Diversity and Salvation

Download or read book Communion Diversity and Salvation written by Brian Flanagan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-09 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions surrounding the understanding of "communion" are a significant feature of much contemporary ecclesiology, but their prominence calls attention to wider questions regarding ecclesiological method. Brian Flanagan addresses the questions of how to characterize a systematic ecclesiology and the possibility of a systematic communion ecclesiology through an investigation of the concept of communion in the work of Jean-Marie Tillard, OP. Tillard's theology is noted as the most prominent Roman Catholic communion ecclesiology. Flanagan argues that Tillard contributes to systematic ecclesiology by defining the concept of communion in relation to Christology, soteriology, and theological anthropology, thereby framing an answer to the contemporary question of ecclesial unity and diversity. The book also assesses the danger of idealism in Tillard's thought, and suggests that further engagement with social scientific study of the church will help strengthen, nuance, and critique Tillard's idea of communion.

Book Romance and System The Theological Synthesis of Matthias Joseph Scheeben

Download or read book Romance and System The Theological Synthesis of Matthias Joseph Scheeben written by Aidan Nichols, OP and published by Emmaus Academic. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Pope Benedict XVI, writing in 1988 as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, described Matthias Joseph Scheeben’s theology as justly praised, but rather less read. My modest hope, through this entirely straightforward study, is to encourage some more—in a phrase Scheeben would relish—ecclesially fruitful reading of him in the English-speaking world.”—From the Author’s Preface Romance and System: The Theological Synthesis of Matthias Joseph Scheeben by Aidan Nichols, OP, is a comprehensive introduction to one of the most significant dogmatic theologians of recent centuries. Exploring the vigor, coherence, and beauty of Scheeben’s theological vision, Nichols concludes that the great German theologian’s work combines “romance and system”: a lyrical appeal to the imagination and a virile challenge to the intellect, the inspiration of metaphor and the conceptual power of an architectonic account of the revelation carried by the Church. Romance and System examines the major themes of Scheeben’s works and underscores their preeminence in Catholic dogmatic theology.

Book The Nature of the Mystical Body Volume I

Download or read book The Nature of the Mystical Body Volume I written by Ernest Mura and published by . This book was released on 2023-08-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an updated edition of the English translation published in 1963 based on Volume I of Le Corps Mystique du Christ: Fr. Ernest Mura's classic treatment of the doctrine of the Mystical Body of Christ originally published in French in 1934. It also features the first-ever English translation of Fr. Réginald Garrigou-Lagrange's preface found in the original French edition. The unity of the total Christ and his supernatural activity are the two aspects of the theology of the Mystical Body. Father Mura's present study limits itself to the first aspect, which is the most delicate problem of all: "You are the Body of Christ" (1 Cor. 12:27). The question of how to understand this bold assertion of St. Paul has been asked by many theologians, who, nevertheless, have not attempted to answer it; perhaps they fear that explanations which are too human may mar the beauty of the dogma of our incorporation into Christ Jesus. Hence, they do not explain wherein consists the organic and vital cohesion that makes of Jesus and ourselves a single "total Christ." Viewing the building up of the Mystical Body from the vantage point of the author's synthesis, the reader will see in it the great recapitulation in Christ, to which all the works of God are ordered for the salvation of the human race. Once the revealed truths that are most familiar to us-the notion of grace, the sacrament of baptism, the dogma of the spiritual motherhood of Mary-are seen in their relationship to the total doctrine, they take on a breadth, a supernatural beauty, and a practical significance that we did not suspect.
