Book The Cultural Economy of Land

Download or read book The Cultural Economy of Land written by Suhita Sinha Roy and published by Tulika Books. This book was released on 2019-07-30 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cultural Economy of Land is situated at two crossroads of agrarian history. The first is the cyclical seasonality of agriculture and the linear progressive time of technological innovation and political transformation; and the second is that of the economic and cultural meanings associated with land. Land acquires various dimensions beyond property, tenure, revenue, and inheritance if maps are connected with knowledge systems; land productivity with food habits, gender relations, and patterns of migration; landscapes with modes of irrigation and railroad construction; cropping patterns with festivals; village territoriality with social relations of power. This book is an attempt to bring out a multilayered pattern of rural life-world by, tracing on the one hand, major social and political changes, and, on the other hand, the everyday life of Birbhum district at a specific historical juncture.

Book Property Land Revenue and Policy

Download or read book Property Land Revenue and Policy written by J. Albert Rorabacher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first century-and-a-half of its nearly 275 year existence, the English East India Company remained ostensibly a mercantile enterprise, satisfied to simply trade, competing with other European traders. In the middle of the eighteenth century, as a response to French expansion in India, the East India Company redefined itself, becoming an active participant in India’s ‘game of thrones’. Through the use of its military might, only tentatively supported by the English Crown and Parliament, the Company dominated trade, became a king-maker, and ultimately a colonial administrator over much of the Indian Subcontinent. The Company had become a state in the guise of a merchant. The Company consolidated its position in Bengal, then began to exert its power by toppling local potentates and absorbing one princely state after another. Confronted with a land system that was built on custom and tradition, and not law, with no tradition of land ownership, the British were forced to formulate a new land tenure and revenue system for India, one based on British principles of property. Permanent Settlement was the new government’s first attempt at creating a new revenue system. Through its creation, for the first time, private property rights were conferred on the formerly non-landowning zamindars. Which, as this authoritative volume notes in turn, created a land market, destabilizing the political and social structure of India irretrievably.

Book Bengal Industries and the British Industrial Revolution 1757 1857

Download or read book Bengal Industries and the British Industrial Revolution 1757 1857 written by Indrajit Ray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-08-09 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to enlighten two grey areas of industrial historiography. Although Bengal industries were globally dominant on the eve of the industrial revolution, no detailed literature is available about their later course of development. A series of questions are involved in it. Did those industries decline during the spells of British industrial revolution? If yes, what were their reasons? If not, the general curiosity is: On which merits could those industries survive against the odds of the technological revolution? A thorough discussion on these issues also clears up another area of dispute relating to the occurrence of deindustrialization in Bengal, and the validity of two competing hypotheses on it, viz. i) the mainstream hypothesis of market failures, and ii) the neo-marxian hypothesis of imperialistic state interventions

Book The Emergence of Indian Nationalism

Download or read book The Emergence of Indian Nationalism written by Anil Seal and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1968-03-02 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume Dr Seal analyses the social roots of the rather confused stirrings towards political organisations of the 1870s and 1880s which brought about the foundation of the Indian National Congress. He is concerned not only with the politicians, viceroys and civil servants but with the social structure of those parts of India where political movements were most prominent at the time. The emphasis of this work is more upon Indian politics than upon British policy: the associations in Bengal and Bombay, the genesis of the Congress and the Muslim breakaway which accentuated the political divisions in India.
