Book Reactions of Coordinated Ligands

Download or read book Reactions of Coordinated Ligands written by P.S. Braterman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This, the second and final volume of Reactions of Coordinated Ligands, describes the chemistry of ligands bound through non-carbon atoms, and of coordinated carbon dioxide. As before, emphasis is on the underlying mechanisms, which provide a unity of understanding for superficially disparate processes. The wide range of topics covered illustrates well both the versatility and the usefulness of coordination chemistry in the controlled activation of ligands. Looking to the future, carbon dioxide is the feedstock of last resort. The homogeneous reduction of dinitrogen to ammonia now seems unlikely to replace the Haber process, but solution reactions also lead to more complex, varied, and valuable products. Nitrogen monoxide, a "non innocent" ligand, impinges as pollutant and reagent. Its rich chemistry stems from its linked roles as three-electron donor, and as extremely powerful -acceptor. In the hydrolysis and condensation of complexed amides, esters etc. , metals act both as templates and as tunable and poly functional Lewis acids. Here the control of hydrophobic and steric interactions begins to model the subtle mechanisms of biological specificity. Finally, phosphorus and sulfur are imporant both as ligand atoms in themselves, and as anchors for other functionalities. I would like to thank all those who have been involved in the writing and production of this work, and also my colleagues old and new, at Glasgow and the University of North Texas, for their support. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coordination chemistry, as we know it today, has been shaped by major figures from the past, one of whom was Joseph Chatt. Beginning with a description of Chatt's career presented by co-workers, contemporaries and students, this fascinating book then goes on to show how many of today's leading practitioners in the field, working in such diverse areas as phosphines, hydrogen complexes, transition metal complexes and nitrogen fixation, have been influenced by Chatt. The reader is then brought right up-to-date with the inclusion of some of the latest research on these topics, all of which serves to underline Chatt's continuing legacy. Intended as a permanent record of Chatt's life, work and influence, this book will be of interest to lecturers, graduate students, researchers and science historians.

Book Investigations of Iron nitrogen Bonding at Synthetic Iron sulfur Clusters

Download or read book Investigations of Iron nitrogen Bonding at Synthetic Iron sulfur Clusters written by Arun Sridharan (Scientist in chemistry) and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coordination chemistry of nitrogenous ligands at high-spin iron is investigated through the synthesis and characterization of a terminal imido complex of a cuboidal tetra([mu]3-sulfido)tetrairon (Fe4S4) cluster. Structural, spectroscopic, and computational studies establish a dynamic interplay between Fe-N, Fe-S, and Fe-Fe interactions, tuned by the Fe centers' locally high-spin electron configurations and the pseudo-C[subscript 3v] symmetry of the imido-bound metal site. Reaction with 1,4-cyclohexadiene affords clean conversion to the corresponding [Fe4S4] anilido complex, which was characterized in two oxidation states. Oxidation and reduction of the [Fe4S4] terminal imido complex affords a four-membered redox series spanning the 1−/0/1+/2+ charge states. A combined spectroscopic and theoretical analysis of this redox series using variable-temperature 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy reveals that oxidation events are primarily centered at the imido fragment, which takes on an iminyl ([NAr]̇̇−) or triplet nitrene ([NAr]2̇·) configuration depending on the charge state of the molecule. Two-electron oxidation of [Fe4S4]+ anilido complexes results in formal aminyl radical reductive elimination, generating aniline, hydrazine, and/or azoarene as byproducts along with the corresponding [Fe4S4]2+ solvento adduct. Addition of 1,2-diarylhydrazine to the [Fe4S4]+ solvento adduct results in N-N binuclear oxidative addition to afford the [Fe4S4]2+ anilido complex, which upon further reaction with 1,2-diarylhydrazines catalyzes their disproportionation to aniline and azoarene. The development of new synthetic platforms for investigating the reaction chemistry of iron-sulfur clusters is described: [MFe3S4] cluster cubanes are prepared varying the identity of the heterometal (Mo or V) and the steric profile of its supporting ligand for application in studies of dinitrogen binding and functionalization. The discovery of a new tridentate ligand topology for cuboidal [Fe4S4] clusters incorporating 1,1'-biphenyl-3,3'-diyl linkers is reported, along with strategies for metalating its tris(phosphine) derivative.

Book Uranyl Complexes with Nitrogen and Sulfur Donor Bidentate Ligands a Computational Modeling of Coordination Geometries Thermodynamic Parameters and Ligand Substituent Effects

Download or read book Uranyl Complexes with Nitrogen and Sulfur Donor Bidentate Ligands a Computational Modeling of Coordination Geometries Thermodynamic Parameters and Ligand Substituent Effects written by Patrick Bailey Hogsed and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Actinides represent a special group of metal ions that need to be extensively studied due to their presence in the environment with the construction of nuclear power plants, processing of minerals, and weapon production. Radioactive waste produced by nuclear fission contains several lanthanide and actinide metals, including uranium. The extraction of uranium from nuclear waste is an active area of research. To this end, numerous sulfur and nitrogen-donor ligands have been studied to assist with the nuclear extraction process. Computational chemistry investigations of actinide complexes will provide important insight into metal-ligand bonding and their thermodynamic properties in order to design effective actinide extracting agents. Current research work is focused on studying the coordination chemistry behavior and reaction energetics of a series of uranyl metal complexes with ethylenediamine, 1,2-ethanedithiol, and cysteamine ligands using density functional theory (DFT). Coordination preferences using nitrogen and sulfur-based chelation were evaluated in the gas phase. Nitrogen donor ethylenediamine ligand produced the lowest reaction Gibbs free energies, and sulfur donor cysteamine ligands had the highest values. Ligand substitution effects on uranyl metal-ligand bonding were studied using four substituent groups, CH3, CN, OCH3, and Cl. Electron donor CH3 and OCH3 groups provided relatively shorter metal-ligand bond distances and lower reaction Gibbs free energies. Electron withdrawing substituents resulted in longer metal-ligand bonding and higher reaction Gibbs free energies. Disubstitution of the chelating ligands amplifies the above effects. Future work will focus on exploring more substituents and solvent effects on uranyl metal-ligand complexation reaction using the above ligands.
