Yet, by 1948, the "wvae" of the labor movement had flatered as several strikes were broken. One such strike ws the CIO-UPW packinghouse strike which began in March and ended in defeat in May. Several factors brought about the defeat of the UPW strike: pstwar conservatism, a powerful and organized packing industry, and the hostility and indifference of political leaders. My thesis examines the packinghouse worker's strike in South Saint Paul as part of the national effort by the UPW to win increased wages and keep up with inflation. I will concentrate on the effects of rule changes in labor law and the ALF-CIO conflict on this local strike. My analysis will be based on various local newspapers, state and federal government documents, union records, personal papers, manuscripts, oral interviews with former packinghouse employees, and other primary and secondary sources.
