Book Some Aspects of ICT Uses in the Teaching of EFL at the Tertiary Level in Yemen

Download or read book Some Aspects of ICT Uses in the Teaching of EFL at the Tertiary Level in Yemen written by Abdu Al-Kadi and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2017 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, University of Carthage (ISLT), course: English studies, language: English, abstract: This dissertation intended to (a) elucidate, through a mixed-method research design, how the university EFL learners and teachers utilize available ICT tools/applications and (b) measure the impacts of this usage on the learners’ proficiency and academic achievements. Data were collected in three phases: surveys, tests, and observations. The sample consisted of 428 senior students, 40 EFL teachers, and 10 head teachers, recruited from five public universities in Yemen. Of this initial cohort, 131 students were singled out for performance analysis. Again, within this subsample, 20 informants were kept under observation. Two types of data (quantitative and qualitative) were collected. The quantitative data were analyzed by applying appropriate descriptive and inferential statistics by using SPSS. Qualitative data were analyzed subjectively, establishing patterns and categories. Results indicated that most of the ICTs were used on an ad hoc basis. While there were no statistically significant impacts of using ICT on the learners’ performance, the respondents hold the view that such appliances offer some opportunities for engagement, interactivity, and motivation to learn English formally and informally. The findings brought to the foreground some pedagogic and linguistic implications and useful points for further research.

Book The Use of the Internet Among EFL Teachers at the Colleges of Technology in Saudi Arabia

Download or read book The Use of the Internet Among EFL Teachers at the Colleges of Technology in Saudi Arabia written by Ali M. Al-Asmari and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Because of its far reaching impact on many aspects and functions of educational institutions and its potential benefits for educators, the Internet has been the topic of much interest within the educational community. Ways of using the Internet as a medium to deliver instructional materials and to access digital libraries are reshaping how college campuses function, including the creation of virtual campuses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of the Internet by teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) in Saudi Arabian colleges of technology. A secondary purpose was to explore the relationship of teachers' use of the Internet with a selected set of variables. These variables included EFL teachers' personal characteristics, their level of access to the Internet, their perceived computer and Internet expertise, and their perceptions of the Internet as a tool for instruction. This study derived its theoretical framework from Rogers' (1995) model of diffusion of innovations. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were employed to collect data on the population. A questionnaire was developed and distributed to all EFL teachers (N=203) in the four main colleges of technology in Saudi Arabia (located in Riyadh, Abha, Jeddah, and Dammam) during the 2004-2005 academic year. Validity and reliability were established for the survey instrument. The return rate of the survey was 81%. The survey stage was followed by phone interviews with a random sample of 15 teachers. Results from both the quantitative and qualitative domains of the study indicated that the participants had rarely used the Internet, particularly for instructional purposes. Indeed, they reported more use of the Internet for personal than for instructional purposes. Participants had high levels of Internet use in mainstream Internet services such as e-mail and the World Wide Web. While they had positive perceptions of the use of the Internet as a pedagogical tool, they had relatively limited levels of access to and expertise with computers and the Internet. Positive correlations existed between teachers' level of use of the Internet and five independent variables, including computer and Internet expertise, place of access to the Internet, perceptions of the Internet, computer experience, and Internet experience. Multiple regression analysis indicated that only expertise, place of access, and Internet experience had a significant predictive value of teachers' use of the Internet. The results indicated that approximately 39% of the variance in Internet use was explained by the independent variables included in this study. A major conclusion of the study was that to increase Internet use, EFL teachers need to be given more Internet training. In-service training needs to be a top priority, with a primary focus on using the Internet as a tool for teaching and learning. Also, based on the study's findings, it was recommended that policy-makers maintain EFL teachers' positive perceptions of the pedagogical use of the Internet by spending more money on increasing the computer infrastructure in the colleges of technology in Saudi Arabia, on improving Internet access and services, and on educating both teachers and students with respect to issues concerning the cultural appropriateness of materials available on the web.

Book Use of ICT in Teaching English

Download or read book Use of ICT in Teaching English written by Housougna Rabiyatou Zigani and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis proposes an innovative approach to improving English language proficiency among students in the University Joseph KI-Zerbo (UJKZ) English department in Burkina Faso, focusing on teaching listening comprehension (LC). Based on a data collection methodology over two years at the UJKZ, we aim to explore the potential benefits of introducing new ICT to enhance students' LC skills. The experiments conducted in this thesis are based on a recent observation: educational technologies have become necessary in language teaching, particularly since the COVID-19 crisis. While many European universities have set up distance learning systems to ensure continuity of learning, the University JKZ has faced challenges during this transition, like many universities in Africa, Asia, and South America. Several innovative systems have been put in place in this research. Firstly, the study exploits the possibilities offered by an international collaborative project called the VEC, which provides a collaborative distance learning environment using OER. By participating in this project, students developed their language skills by working in teams with students from other countries to tackle environmental challenges and exchange best practices and ideas. Secondly, using ICT tools enabled students to actively participate in listening exercises based on audio recordings and gap-filling texts. The study draws on theoretical concepts such as collaborative learning, peer tutoring, challenge-based learning, and distance learning. The data is analysed using descriptive and Multivariate statistical approaches. This study enables us to highlight how ICTE can be integrated and the dynamics of work to improve LC, which leads to significant progress in language learning, particularly concerning LC. The results of the study demonstrate the effectiveness of LC teaching and its positive impact on the language skills of UJKZ students. In addition, it highlights the pedagogical integration of ICT in higher education, showing the potential of collaborative learning experiences and virtual platforms to foster effective learning and develop essential skills.

Book The Role of Ict in the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language Efl

Download or read book The Role of Ict in the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language Efl written by Thomas Arnesen and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite ambitious political plans and substantial economic investments, there are - at best - mixed experiences with the introduction of ICTs in classroom settings in most western countries. Norway is an interesting case in point because it is the OECD country with the highest ICT use among pupils and the best school level ICT infrastructure, yet at the same time experiences the greatest relative decline in skills and knowledge from 2003 to 2009 as measured in the PISA study. In trying to better understand some of the processes responsible for this state of affairs, this book examines how and why teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) make use of ICTs in their teaching. Based on data from a national survey of lower secondary school EFL-teachers, it is possible to discern the common characteristics of high ICT intensity teachers. Among the most salient factors we find stronger faith in the objectives set out in national plans and strategies. Educational ICT initiatives enter a subject specific context which must be sufficiently acknowledged by administrators and policy makers in order to make optimal use of ICTs' positive potential.

Book Challenges of English Language Teaching in Yemeni Primary and Secondary Schools

Download or read book Challenges of English Language Teaching in Yemeni Primary and Secondary Schools written by Sabri Thabit Saleh Ahmed and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2018 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: A+, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (Dialoguing Borders: Vital Issues In Humanities, Commerce, IT and Management (International Conference)), language: English, abstract: In the recent decades, English has become an indispensable part of the Yemeni primary and secondary school curriculum. It is not only a matter of being a compulsory subject within the school curriculum but it is also an area of study that many students/ pupils want to develop. Many Yemeni parents have recently recognized the importance of English as a key to science, technology and business in our modern world and want their children to get mastery over English. Unfortunately, though its recognized importance by teachers, schoolmasters, students and parents, the outcomes, especially within the rural Yemeni context, are still low and most students can’t cultivate a good level of English during their pre-tertiary education due to many challenges that obstruct English language teaching in the Yemeni schools. This study was an attempt to survey challenges of English language teaching in AL-Dhalea primary and secondary schools from the viewpoints of 20 EFL senior teachers and supervisors for the purpose of identifying such challenges and suggesting some solutions and strategies for better English language teaching. Findings show that large classes, lack of teaching aids, teachers’ low proficiency in English and their limited experience with communicative language teaching are considered as major challenges of English language teaching in the concerned Yemeni primary and secondary schools.

Book An Exploration of the Factors Associated with the Attitudes of High School EFL Teachers in Syria Toward Information and Communication Technology

Download or read book An Exploration of the Factors Associated with the Attitudes of High School EFL Teachers in Syria Toward Information and Communication Technology written by Abdulkafi Albirini and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The global adoption of information and communication technology (ICT) has been the landmark of the educational scene for the last two decades. A main feature of most technology initiatives worldwide is their focus on the technology itself and their inattentiveness to the human factor involved in the implementation process. The overall purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes of EFL teachers in Syrian high schools toward ICT in education and to explore the relationship of teachers' attitudes with a selected set of variables. These variables included computer attributes, cultural perceptions, computer competence, computer access, and demographic variables (including computer training background). Teachers' attitudes were examined from two related theoretical frameworks: Rogers's (1995) Diffusion of Innovations and Ajzen and Fishbein's (1980) Model of Reasoned Action. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were employed to collect data on the population of EFL teachers in the city of Hims during the 2003-2004 school year (N=887). A questionnaire was developed and distributed to 326 sample teachers selected randomly from the population. The survey stage was followed by in-depth phone interviews with a purposeful sample of 15 teachers. Results from both quantitative and qualitative data indicated that the participants had positive attitudes toward ICT in education. While the participants had somewhat positive perceptions of the attributes of computers, they were relatively neutral about the cultural relevance of ICT to Syrian society and schools. The teachers also reported low levels of computer competence, access, and training. Significant positive correlations existed between teachers' attitudes toward ICT and five independent variables, including computer attributes, cultural perceptions, computer competence, computer access, and computer training. Multiple regression analysis indicated that only the first three of the above independent variables had a significant predictive value of computer attitudes toward ICT. The results indicated that 0.58% of the variance in computer attitude was explained by the independent variables included in this study. Based on the findings, it was recommended that policy-makers sustain teachers' positive attitudes toward ICT, offer them more training opportunities, and take steps to alleviate the concerns of some teachers about the culturally improper material on the web.

Book Improving Classroom Learning with ICT

Download or read book Improving Classroom Learning with ICT written by Rosamund Sutherland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-11-21 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improving Classroom Learning with ICT examines the ways in which ICT can be used in the classroom to enhance teaching and learning in different settings and across different subjects. Weaving together evidence of teachers’ and learners’ experiences of ICT, the authors: explain why the process of integrating ICT is not straightforward; discuss whether hardware and infrastructure alone are sufficient to ensure full integration and exploitation of ICT investment; emphasise the pivotal role that teachers play in supporting learning with ICT across the curriculum; argue that teachers need a greater understanding of how to put ICT to use in teaching and learning; highlight that out-of-school use of ICT has an impact on in-school learning; consider what kinds of professional development are most effective in supporting teachers to use technologies creatively and productively. Case studies are used to illustrate key issues and to elaborate a range of theoretical ideas that can be used in the classroom. This book will be of interest to all those concerned with maximising the benefits of ICT in the classroom.

Book Expectations and Aspirations

Download or read book Expectations and Aspirations written by Safaa El Tayeb El-Kogali and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education, which has been at the heart of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region’s history and civilizations for centuries, has a large untapped potential to contribute to human capital, well-being, and wealth. The region has invested heavily in education for decades, but it has not been able to reap the benefits of its investments. Despite a series of reforms, MENA has remained stuck in a low-learning, low-skills level. Expectations and Aspirations: A New Framework for Education in the Middle East and North Africa identifies four key sets of tensions that are holding back education in the region: credentials and skills, discipline and inquiry, control and autonomy, and tradition and modernity. These tensions are shaped by society and are reflected in classrooms. If they are not addressed, MENA will continue to operate at a level below its potential. This report outlines a new framework with a three-pronged approach that can help address these tensions and unleash the potential of education in MENA: • A concerted push for learning that starts early for all children regardless of background, with qualified and motivated educators, and that leverages technology, uses modern approaches, and monitors learning outcomes • A stronger pull for skills by all stakeholders in the labor market and society that involves coordinated multisystem reforms within and beyond the education system • A new pact for education at the national level with a unified vision, shared responsibilities, and accountabilities. Education is not just the responsibility of the education system—it is everyone’s business. The push, pull, and pact framework offers an opportunity for MENA to move forward to reclaim its heritage of a learned region and to meet the expectations and aspirations of its people. The current situation in MENA requires a renewed focus on education, not just as a national priority for economic growth and social development, but as a national emergency for stability, peace, and prosperity.
