Book Cross linguistic Influence in the Written Present Tense Forms of Malay and English

Download or read book Cross linguistic Influence in the Written Present Tense Forms of Malay and English written by Nurul Huda binti Hassan Bakri and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Issues concerning first language influence have been perpetually discussed in connection with the acquisition of a target language. This research focuses on first language (L1 - Malay) influence on the acquisition of a second language (L2 - English). It deals with the significance of learners' L1 in the written production of L2. In particular, this research deals with the use of L1 present tense by Malay speakers when writing in the target language. Data was collected in the form of written output from young adult Malay English as second language users. To facilitate comparisons of the two languages, participants were requested to compose essays in both Malay and English. The samples of students' written forms came from 2 levels: lower intermediate and advance users of English as a second language. Content analysis was thoroughly carried out by determining 'obligatory occasions' or 'obligatory contexts' in the written corpus. In this study, obligatory occasions for the temporal forms are defined as occasions in which only the correct temporal form is acceptable. An error in a student's written text refers to the occasion when the required forms are not used. The result of the study shows that the use of temporal word markers in Malay present time forms interfere with the acquisition of English present tense. Several temporal issues need to be considered closely by language instructors. The study suggests that the teaching and learning of English will be more effective when knowledge of the differences between the two languages, Malay and English, can be applied by both the learners and the instructors.

Book Charting an Asian Trajectory for Literacy Education

Download or read book Charting an Asian Trajectory for Literacy Education written by Su Li Chong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving outwards from a centripetal force of biographical stances, this book presents the collective perspectives of literacy researchers from Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Taiwan. It represents the first all-Asian initiative to showcase the region’s post-colonial, multilingual and multicultural narratives of literacy education. This book provides a much-needed platform that initiates important conversations about literacy as a sociocultural practice in a region that is both challenged and shaped by sociocultural influence unique to Asia’s historical and geopolitical trajectory. Driven by the authors’ lived experiences of becoming literate as well as their empirical research work in later years, each chapter brings decades of biographical narratives and collective empirical research findings to bear. Within the book are negotiations about literacy across and within home and school contexts; transactions of literature, text and reader; and considerations of the literacy policy-practice nexus. These trajectories, while divergent in their issues, come together as shared lived experience located in local contexts considered through global perspectives. As Asia looks set to become the 21st century’s new economic and labour force, the need to understand the sociocultural milieu of this region cannot be understated. This book on literacy education in Asia contributes to the larger narrative.

Book Effects of the Second Language on the First Language

Download or read book Effects of the Second Language on the First Language written by Yan Yang and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language transfer or cross-linguistic influence of one language on another has become one of the most heated topics and extensively discussed issues in the field of second language acquisition (SLA) and bilingualism. Most of the studies have explored the influence of the first language on the second language. Fewer studies have turned their research focus to the influence of the second language on the first language, much less to develop some mature theories in this emerging field. This study, therefore, adopts the "reversed" way of investigating the cross-linguistic influence and tries to demonstrate that the first language of those people who remain in their home country and learn the second language intensively may be influenced by the second language and show the combined features of the first and the second language. Based on the theoretical framework of Cook's Multi-competence Theory (1991) and the Integration Continuum (2002), Cummins's Common Underlying Proficiency Model (1981), Kecskes and Papp's Common Underlying Conceptual Base (2003), and DePalma and Ringer's Adaptive Transfer Framework (2011), the present study investigated the effects of the second language (English) on the first language (Chinese) in an environment where English as a foreign language (EFL) is learned through instruction in a classroom setting, where the target language culture is not directly present and students usually do not have direct access to it. The main research objectives of the present study are: 1) To examine the relationships between the first language (L1) Chinese argumentative writing and the second language (L2) English argumentative writing produced by Chinese students who learn English as an L2; 2) to identify the second language (L2) linguistic features reflected in L2 English writers' L1 Chinese argumentative writing; 3) to identify L2 English rhetorical text features reflected in their L1 Chinese argumentative writing; and 4) to probe into L2 English writers' writing process to see how backward transfer occurs. Due to the explanatory and exploratory nature of the present study, a mixed-methods design is adopted to answer the research questions in breadth and depth. This study recruited 284 third-year and fourth-year Chinese English-major undergraduates on a voluntary basis. Quantitative data were obtained through the two writing tests (L1 Chinese argumentative writing test and L2 English argumentative writing) to examine the relationships between L1 writing and L2 writing. Then, the follow-up qualitative approach which included think-aloud protocols and stimulated recall interviews were conducted to triangulate, extend and explain findings from the quantitative study and demonstrate the cognitive processes of transfer of L2 features to L1 writing. The results indicated that there was a small correlation between L1 Chinese writing proficiency and L2 English writing proficiency and that L2 English writing proficiency was a small factor predicting Chinese EFL learners' L1 Chinese writing proficiency. The backward transfer in writing occurred at the linguistic levels in terms of the lexical transfer, syntactic transfer, and transfer in cohesion, as well as the rhetorical levels such as the main idea location, macro-level rhetorical patterns, summary statement, evidence type, and language style which was not salient. The factors affecting the backward transfer were categorized into linguistic and psycholinguistic factors, cognitive, attentional, and developmental factors, and factors related to cumulative language experience. This study offers important insights into backward transfer research and provides empirical evidence for policy-makers and institutions of higher education in China. The findings of this study are beneficial to Chinese EFL teachers' and learners' awareness of the effects of the second language on the first language, which will contribute to language teaching and learning and develop both teachers' and students' language awareness to enhance the positive transfer, inhibit the negative transfer, and leverage on its benefit.

Book Factors Affecting the Level of English Proficiency

Download or read book Factors Affecting the Level of English Proficiency written by Nazurah Abdul Rahman and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Case Study from the year 2016 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: A, International Islamic University Malaysia, course: Bachelor of Arts (Honours) English for International Communication, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors affecting the level of English proficiency among International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) undergraduate students. A set of questionnaires were distributed online and data from a sample of 75 students were collected through Google Forms. Two demographic factors, namely gender and years of learning English, were used as the variables. The finding of the study suggests that the factors affecting the level of English proficiency among IIUM undergraduate students were not affected by gender but were affected by the duration of learning English. The factors that were contributing to the level of English proficiency among IIUM undergraduate students were language anxiety, students’ attitude and also peers, parental and teacher influences. Besides, the study also revealed that there is no significant relationship between cultural stereotypes and students’ performance in second language acquisition. The level of English proficiency among Malaysian students are often questioned. Despite learning English for almost 10 years in school, the majority of Malaysian students still encounter difficulties in using the language effectively especially in tertiary education. Many local graduates are still unemployed due to their lack of fluency in English.
