Our goal was to foster interaction in this interdisciplinary field which involves electrical engineers, computer scientists, semiconductor physicists and mathematicians, from both university and industry. In particular, the program was meant to encourage the participation of numerical and mathematical analysts with backgrounds in ordinary and partial differential equations, to help get them involved in the mathematical as pects of semiconductor models and circuits. We are grateful to W.M. Coughran, Jr., Julian Cole, Peter Lloyd, and Jacob White for helping Farouk Odeh organize this activity and trust that the proceedings will provide a fitting memorial to Farouk. Book excerpt: This is the first book published in English devoted solely to the boundary function method, which is one of the asymptotic methods. This method provides an effective and simple way to obtain asymptotic approximations for the solutions of certain ordinary and partial differential equations containing small parameters in front of the highest derivatives. These equations, called singularly perturbed equations, are often used in modeling. In addition to numerous examples, the book includes discussions on singularly perturbed problems from chemical kinetics and heat conduction, semiconductor device modeling, and mathematical biology. The book also contains a variety of original ideas and explicit calculations previously available only in journal literature, as well as many concrete applied problems illustrating the boundary function method algorithms. Quite general asymptotic results described in the book are rigorous in the sense that, along with the asymptotic algorithms, in most cases the theorems on estimation of the remainder terms are presented. A survey of results of Russian mathematicians on the subject is provided; many of these results are not well known in the West. Based on the Russian edition of the textbook by Vasil'eva and Butuzov, this American edition, prepared by Kalachev, differs in many aspects. The text of the book has been revised substantially, some new material has been added to every chapter, and more examples, exercises, and new references on asymptotic methods and their applications have been included.

Book excerpt: The invention of semiconductor devices is a fairly recent one, considering classical time scales in human life. The bipolar transistor was announced in 1947, and the MOS transistor, in a practically usable manner, was demonstrated in 1960. From these beginnings the semiconductor device field has grown rapidly. The first integrated circuits, which contained just a few devices, became commercially available in the early 1960s. Immediately thereafter an evolution has taken place so that today, less than 25 years later, the manufacture of integrated circuits with over 400.000 devices per single chip is possible. Coincident with the growth in semiconductor device development, the literature concerning semiconductor device and technology issues has literally exploded. In the last decade about 50.000 papers have been published on these subjects. The advent of so called Very-Large-Scale-Integration (VLSI) has certainly revealed the need for a better understanding of basic device behavior. The miniaturization of the single transistor, which is the major prerequisite for VLSI, nearly led to a breakdown of the classical models of semiconductor devices.

Book excerpt: This book describes and illustrates the application of several asymptotic methods that have proved useful in the authors' research in electromagnetics and antennas. We first define asymptotic approximations and expansions and explain these concepts in detail. We then develop certain prerequisites from complex analysis such as power series, multivalued functions (including the concepts of branch points and branch cuts), and the all-important gamma function. Of particular importance is the idea of analytic continuation (of functions of a single complex variable); our discussions here include some recent, direct applications to antennas and computational electromagnetics. Then, specific methods are discussed. These include integration by parts and the Riemann-Lebesgue lemma, the use of contour integration in conjunction with other methods, techniques related to Laplace's method and Watson's lemma, the asymptotic behavior of certain Fourier sine and cosine transforms, and the Poisson summation formula (including its version for finite sums). Often underutilized in the literature are asymptotic techniques based on the Mellin transform; our treatment of this subject complements the techniques presented in our recent Synthesis Lecture on the exact (not asymptotic) evaluation of integrals. Throughout, we provide illustrative examples. Some of them are applications to special functions of mathematical physics. Others, taken from our published research, include the application of elementary methods to develop certain simple formulas for transmission lines, examples illustrating the difficulties in solving fundamental integral equations of antenna theory, an examination of the fundamentals of the Method of Auxiliary Sources (MAS), and a study of the near fields of certain unusual types of radiators.
