Book excerpt: "Somali sideways has got to be one of the ground breaking creative projects ever created by a Somali for Somalis only. It shares powerful, sad, funny and hopeful global stories of Somalis. I was honoured to have been part of the work Mohamed created and it gave me the opportunity to share my journey with many other Somalis around the world." - Leyla Hussein; Lead Social Activist, Psychotherapist, Writer. "I think Somali Sideways was the first platform that allowed Somalis to connect with and be inspired by stories of strangers from around the world. I think the images of Somalis standing sideways were very powerful. To me it felt like they were allowing us into their lives but at the same time reminding that there is a lot more to them that we don't know." - Haweya Ismail; Founder of MUD & MUSK "Mohamed Mohamud is one of the smartest, inspiring and hardworking leaders you will ever meet. When Mohamed started Somali Sideways to shape the narrative and showcase positive images of the Somali experience globally, there were not many platforms that filled the need Mohamed saw. Mohamed was a young man ahead of his time. Hundreds of people have reached out to him to share their life experiences from all corners of the world. Somali Sideways brought us stories of Somalis in places we never imagine finding Somalis in the first place. With this book, Mohamed has chosen some of the best and inspiring stories that he hopes to share with the world." - Guled Ibrahim; Rotary Peace Fellow and One Young World Ambassador

Book The Terrorist Criminal Nexus

Download or read book The Terrorist Criminal Nexus written by Jennifer L. Hesterman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-04-25 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postmodern global terrorist groups engage sovereign nations asymmetrically with prolonged, sustained campaigns driven by ideology. Increasingly, transnational criminal organizations operate with sophistication previously only found in multinational corporations. Unfortunately, both of these entities can now effectively hide and morph, keeping law enforcement and intelligence agencies in the dark and on the run. Perhaps more disturbing is the fact that al Qaeda, Hezbollah, FARC, drug cartels, and increasingly violent gangs—as well as domestic groups such as the Sovereign Citizens—are now joining forces. Despite differing ideologies, they are threatening us in new and provocative ways. The Terrorist-Criminal Nexus: An Alliance of International Drug Cartels, Organized Crime, and Terror Groups frames this complex issue using current research and real-world examples of how these entities are sharing knowledge, training, tactics, and—in increasing frequency—joining forces. Providing policy makers, security strategists, law enforcement and intelligence agents, and students with new evidence of this growing threat, this volume: Examines current and future threats from international and domestic criminal and terror groups Identifies specific instances in which these groups are working together or in parallel to achieve their goals Discusses the "lifeblood" of modern organizations—the money trail Describes how nefarious groups leverage both traditional funding methods and e-commerce to raise, store, move, and launder money Explores the social networking phenomenon and reveals how it is the perfect clandestine platform for spying, communicating, recruiting, and spreading propaganda Investigates emergent tactics such as the use of human shields, and the targeting of first responders, schools, hospitals, and churches This text reveals the often disregarded, misunderstood, or downplayed nexus threat to the United States. Proving definitively that such liaisons exist despite differing ideologies, the book provides a thought-provoking new look at the complexity and phenomena of the terrorist-criminal nexus. This book was excerpted in the February/March 2013 issue of The Counter Terrorist.

Book State Failure and State Weakness in a Time of Terror

Download or read book State Failure and State Weakness in a Time of Terror written by Robert I. Rotberg and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2004-05-13 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The threat of terror, which flares in Africa and Indonesia, has given the problem of failed states an unprecedented immediacy and importance. In the past, failure had a primarily humanitarian dimension, with fewer implications for peace and security. Now nation-states that fail, or may do so, pose dangers to themselves, to their neighbors, and to people around the globe: preventing their failure, and reviving those that do fail, has become a strategic as well as a moral imperative. State Failure and State Weakness in a Time of Terror develops an innovative theory of state failure that classifies and categorizes states along a continuum from weak to failed to collapsed. By understanding the mechanisms and identifying the tell-tale indicators of state failure, it is possible to develop strategies to arrest the fatal slide from weakness to collapse. This state failure paradigm is illustrated through detailed case studies of states that have failed and collapsed (the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sierra Leone, the Sudan, Somalia), states that are dangerously weak (Colombia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan), and states that are weak but safe (Fiji, Haiti, Lebanon).

Book Somalia State Collapse Terrorism and Piracy

Download or read book Somalia State Collapse Terrorism and Piracy written by Brian J. Hesse and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The situation in Somalia today embodies some of the most pressing issues in international relations. How should the international community deal with the collapsed state that is Somalia? From the presence of al-Qaeda operatives to pirates, to what extent is Somalia a threat to global peace and commerce? Which aspects of Somalia's economic, social and political landscape can be considered successful, and how do these ‘success stories’ reflect some of the more problematic issues the country faces? This book sheds light on all of these topics and more. The book is written to appeal to a wide audience, from specialists in international security, development and/or humanitarian issues, to students and casual readers. Its six contributing authors, with their focus on current events mixed with historical perspective, ensure readers get varying views of what is happening today in the Horn of Africa. The book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Contemporary African Studies.

Book Profile Pieces

Download or read book Profile Pieces written by Sue Joseph and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the history, theory and journalistic practice of profile writing. Profiles, and the practice of writing them, are of increasing interest to scholars of journalism because conflicts between the interviewer and the subject exemplify the changing nature of journalism itself. While the subject, often through the medium of their press representative, struggles to retain control of the interview space, the journalist seeks to subvert it. This interesting and multi-layered interaction, however, has rarely been subject to critical scrutiny, partly because profiles have traditionally been regarded as public relations exercises or as ‘soft’ journalism. However, chapters in this volume reveal not only that profiling has, historically, taken many different forms, but that the idea of the interview as a contested space has applications beyond the subject of celebrated individuals. The volume looks at the profile’s historical beginnings, at the contemporary manufacture of celebrity versus the ‘ordinary’, at profiling communities, countries and movements, at profiling the destitute, at sporting personalities and finally at profiling and trauma.

Book Combating Terrorism U S Government Should Improve Its Reporting on Terrorist Safe Havens

Download or read book Combating Terrorism U S Government Should Improve Its Reporting on Terrorist Safe Havens written by Charles Michael Johnson, Jr. and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denying safe haven to terrorists has been a key national security concern since 2002. Safe havens allow terrorists to train recruits and plan operations against the U.S. and its interests across the globe. As a result, Congress has required agencies to provide detailed information regarding U.S. efforts to address terrorist safe havens. This report assesses the extent to which: (1) the Dept. of State (State) has identified and assessed terrorist safe havens in its Country Reports on Terrorism: and (2) the U.S. government has identified efforts to deny terrorists safe haven consistent with reporting requirements. To address these objectives, the report analyzed country-level plans for the Philippines, Somalia, and Yemen. Illus. A print on demand report.

Book Humanitarianism in Question

Download or read book Humanitarianism in Question written by Michael Barnett and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Years of tremendous growth in response to complex emergencies have left a mark on the humanitarian sector. Various matters that once seemed settled are now subjects of intense debate. What is humanitarianism? Is it limited to the provision of relief to victims of conflict, or does it include broader objectives such as human rights, democracy promotion, development, and peacebuilding? For much of the last century, the principles of humanitarianism were guided by neutrality, impartiality, and independence. More recently, some humanitarian organizations have begun to relax these tenets. The recognition that humanitarian action can lead to negative consequences has forced humanitarian organizations to measure their effectiveness, to reflect on their ethical positions, and to consider not only the values that motivate their actions but also the consequences of those actions. In the indispensable Humanitarianism in Question, Michael Barnett and Thomas G. Weiss bring together scholars from a variety of disciplines to address the humanitarian identity crisis, including humanitarianism's relationship to accountability, great powers, privatization and corporate philanthropy, warlords, and the ethical evaluations that inform life-and-death decision making during and after emergencies.
