Results concerning the so-called turnpike property of optimal control problems and zero-sum games in the regions close to the endpoints of the time intervals are the main focus of this book. The description of the structure of approximate solutions on sufficiently large intervals and its stability will interest graduate students and mathematicians in optimal control and game theory, engineering, and economics. This book begins with a brief overview and moves on to analyze the structure of approximate solutions of autonomous nonconcave discrete-time optimal control Lagrange problems.Next the structures of approximate solutions of autonomous discrete-time optimal control problems that are discrete-time analogs of Bolza problems in calculus of variations are studied. The structures of approximate solutions of two-player zero-sum games are analyzed through standard convexity-concavity assumptions. Finally, turnpike properties for approximate solutions in a class of nonautonomic dynamic discrete-time games with convexity-concavity assumptions are examined.

Book excerpt: The structure of approximate solutions of autonomous discrete-time optimal control problems and individual turnpike results for optimal control problems without convexity (concavity) assumptions are examined in this book. In particular, the book focuses on the properties of approximate solutions which are independent of the length of the interval, for all sufficiently large intervals; these results apply to the so-called turnpike property of the optimal control problems. By encompassing the so-called turnpike property the approximate solutions of the problems are determined primarily by the objective function and are fundamentally independent of the choice of interval and endpoint conditions, except in regions close to the endpoints. This book also explores the turnpike phenomenon for two large classes of autonomous optimal control problems. It is illustrated that the turnpike phenomenon is stable for an optimal control problem if the corresponding infinite horizon optimal control problem possesses an asymptotic turnpike property. If an optimal control problem belonging to the first class possesses the turnpike property, then the turnpike is a singleton (unit set). The stability of the turnpike property under small perturbations of an objective function and of a constraint map is established. For the second class of problems where the turnpike phenomenon is not necessarily a singleton the stability of the turnpike property under small perturbations of an objective function is established. Containing solutions of difficult problems in optimal control and presenting new approaches, techniques and methods this book is of interest for mathematicians working in optimal control and the calculus of variations. It also can be useful in preparation courses for graduate students.

The lectures were given by 17 well known specialists in the field, from Brasil, China, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Sweden, UK, USA. Solving continuous optimization problems is a fundamental task in computational mathematics for applications in areas of engineering, economics, chemistry, biology and so on. Most real problems are nonlinear and can be of quite large size. Devel oping efficient algorithms for continuous optimization has been an important field of research in the last 30 years, with much additional impetus provided in the last decade by the availability of very fast and parallel computers. Techniques, like the simplex method, that were already considered fully developed thirty years ago have been thoroughly revised and enormously improved. The aim of this ASI was to present the state of the art in this field. While not all important aspects could be covered in the fifty hours of lectures (for instance multiob jective optimization had to be skipped), we believe that most important topics were presented, many of them by scientists who greatly contributed to their development.

Book excerpt: This book deals with optimality conditions, algorithms, and discretization tech niques for nonlinear programming, semi-infinite optimization, and optimal con trol problems. The unifying thread in the presentation consists of an abstract theory, within which optimality conditions are expressed in the form of zeros of optimality junctions, algorithms are characterized by point-to-set iteration maps, and all the numerical approximations required in the solution of semi-infinite optimization and optimal control problems are treated within the context of con sistent approximations and algorithm implementation techniques. Traditionally, necessary optimality conditions for optimization problems are presented in Lagrange, F. John, or Karush-Kuhn-Tucker multiplier forms, with gradients used for smooth problems and subgradients for nonsmooth prob lems. We present these classical optimality conditions and show that they are satisfied at a point if and only if this point is a zero of an upper semicontinuous optimality junction. The use of optimality functions has several advantages. First, optimality functions can be used in an abstract study of optimization algo rithms. Second, many optimization algorithms can be shown to use search directions that are obtained in evaluating optimality functions, thus establishing a clear relationship between optimality conditions and algorithms. Third, estab lishing optimality conditions for highly complex problems, such as optimal con trol problems with control and trajectory constraints, is much easier in terms of optimality functions than in the classical manner. In addition, the relationship between optimality conditions for finite-dimensional problems and semi-infinite optimization and optimal control problems becomes transparent.

Book excerpt: This research project investigated a number of topics in unconstrained optimization, constrained optimization, and solving systems of nonlinear equations. The biggest accomplishment was the development of a new class of of methods, called tensor methods, for solving systems of nonlinear equations. These methods led to large increases in efficiency over standard methods on extensive batteries of test problems, with especially large gains on problems with singular Jacobians at the solution. The other major accomplishment was the development of a unified theory of trust region methods for unconstrained optimization. Our theory shows how line search, dogleg, or optimal step methods can be constructed that satisfy first and second order conditions for convergence. Research was also completed on conic methods for optimization, on secant methods that satisfy multiple secant equations, and on issues concerned with the computation of null space bases in constrained optimization. Research was initiated on computational methods for nonlinear least squares problems with errors in the independent variables, and in parallel algorithms for optimization.

Book excerpt: This work presents a multi-objective differential dynamic programming approach to constrained discrete-time optimal control. In the backward sweep of the dynamic programming in the quadratic sub problem, the sub problem input at a stage or time step is solved for in terms of the sub problem state entering that stage so as to minimize the summed immediate and future cost subject to minimizing the summed immediate and future constraint violations, for all such entering states. The method differs from previous dynamic programming methods, which used penalty methods, in that the constraints of the sub problem, which may include terminal constraints and path constraints, are solved exactly if they are solvable; otherwise, their total violation is minimized. Again, the resulting solution of the sub problem is an input history that minimizes the quadratic cost function subject to being a minimizer of the total constraint violation. The expected quadratic convergence of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated on a numerical example.
