Book excerpt: Excerpt from Solutions of the Examples in an Elementary Treatise on Conic Sections It is hoped that the following Solutions of the Examples in my Treatise on Conic Sections will he of use to teachers, many of whom can ill afford time to write out detailed solutions of the questions which prove too difficult for their pupils; and that it will also be of service to those students who read the subject without the assistance of a teacher. The solutions will, I trust, be found sufficiently full and clear. In some cases more than one solution is given. My thanks are due to several of my friends, and particularly to Mr S. L. Loney, to Mr J. Barnard and to Rev. H. T. Lewis, for their kindness in reading the proof sheets. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Treatise on Conic Sections and Algebraic Geometry: With Numerous Examples and Hints for Their Solution, Especially Designed for the Use of Beginners The first edition of this book was published shortly after the appearance of Dr Salmon's admirable treatise, with the hope that I could write a short and easy work upon a similar plan, without losing the obvious advantages of his harmonious and consecutive arrangement of the subject, Hence the Reduction of the General Equation of the Second Degree will be found to precede the discussion of the properties of the curves, and the Parabola is treated of after the Ellipse and Hyperbola; but I have arranged the chapter on the Reduction of the General Equation, so that a very small part of it will suffice, when the subject is read for the first time. My chief object was to write with special reference to those difficulties and misapprehensions, which I had found most common to beginners. In the later editions I have tried, without losing sight of my original purpose, to make the book suitable to the requirements of the time. The present edition has been carefully revised throughout. I have added a considerable amount of new matter, especially in the way of illustrative examples worked out. I have also changed the notation of the General Equation of the Second Order, to that used by Dr Salmon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Solutions of Examples in Conic Sections: Treated Geometrically I have frequently received requests for a book of Solutions of the Examples in my treatise on Conic Sections, but have never been able to find time to prepare them. Mr Archer Green, B.A., Scholar of Christ's College, volunteered to undertake the task, with the aid of my notes and his own, and, with the exception of a few at the end, wrote out the solutions entirely. Mr Green was however prevented by illness from completing the revision of the proofs, and I am much indebted to Sir J. Greaves, Fellow of Christ's College, who kindly undertook to examine the rest of the sheets. The book will, I hope, prove useful both to students and teachers, as a companion volume to the treatise on Conic Sections.
