Book Physics of Solid Solution Strengthening

Download or read book Physics of Solid Solution Strengthening written by E. Collings and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the proceedings of a Symposium entitled "The Physics of Solid-Solution Strengthening in Alloys" which was held at McCormick Place, Chicago, on October 2, 1973, in association with a joint meeting of the American Society for Metals (ASM) and The Metallurgical Society (TMS) of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). The symposium, which was initiated and organized by the editors of this volume, was sponsored by the Committee on Alloy Phases, Institute of Metals Division, TMS, AIME, and the Flow and Fracture Section of the Materials Science Division, ASM. The discipline of Alloy Design has been very active in recent years, during which considerable stress has been placed on the roles of crystallography and microstructure in the rationalization and prediction of properties. Underestimated as a component of alloy design, however, has been the importance of physical property studies, even though physical property measurements have tradi tionally been employed to augment direct or x-ray observations in the determination of phase equilibrium (and, indeed, metastable equilibrium) boundaries.

Book Strengthening Mechanisms in Crystal Plasticity

Download or read book Strengthening Mechanisms in Crystal Plasticity written by Ali Argon and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2008 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technologically important metals and alloys have been strengthened throughout history by empirical means. The scientific bases of the central mechanisms of such forms of strengthening, developed over the past several decades are presented here through mechanistic models and associated experimental results.

Book Mechanical Behavior of Materials

Download or read book Mechanical Behavior of Materials written by Thomas H. Courtney and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2005-12-16 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This outstanding text offers a comprehensive treatment of the principles of the mechanical behavior of materials. Appropriate for senior and graduate courses, it is distinguished by its focus on the relationship between macroscopic properties, material microstructure, and fundamental concepts of bonding and crystal structure. The current, second edition retains the original editions extensive coverage of nonmetallics while increasing coverage of ceramics, composites, and polymers that have emerged as structural materials in their own right and are now competitive with metals in many applications. It contains new case studies, includes solved example problems, and incorporates real-life examples. Because of the books extraordinary breadth and depth, adequate coverage of all of the material requires two full semesters of a typical three-credit course. Since most curricula do not have the luxury of allocating this amount of time to mechanical behavior of materials, the text has been designed so that material can be culled or deleted with ease. Instructors can select topics they wish to emphasize and are able to proceed at any level they consider appropriate.

Book Methods of Strengthening the Ultrahigh strength Steels

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strengthening methods for ultrahigh- trength s e ls are describ a i cus ed. The objective is to provid the designer with an idea of t e prop rti s which can be developed by various proces es and th operating personnel with an outline of procedure The processes include the conventional quench and t per, martempering, Ausforming, prestrain a d r p r, pr cipitation hardening as it applies to special steel compositions designed for this purpose (i.e., mar gi g), and austempering. Included for each method is ou line of the proces bul ion of the chanical properties whic c n be expected, iscussion of ny limitations which the process may have, and if available, an explanation of the mech nis of strengthening. Book Materials Science on CD ROM

Download or read book Materials Science on CD ROM written by Andrew J. Green and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-01-22 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials Science on CD-ROM has been designed by the MATTER team for teachers and students of materials science, metallurgy, engineering, and other related disciplines. This collection of completely interactive learning modules - created to make use of those functions best performed by computer-makes it easier to understand the complex concepts of this challenging discipline. Designed to complement traditional teaching and learning methods, this CD-ROM fits well with the current selection of textbooks available and serves as a stimulating resource for teachers explaining new concepts. Materials Science on CD-ROM guides students through the key concepts at their own pace. The "hands on" approach to learning can accelerate the understanding of materials science and prove extremely useful in reviewing for exams. Its highly interactive facilities allow students to test their own understanding - for example, they can see how graphs and processes change by selecting different parameters. They can also test their knowledge by answering the questions that appear within each module. Graphical animation and hypertext links between related screens and topics further enhance these features.

Download or read book Blinding as a Solution to Bias written by Christopher T Robertson and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-01-30 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What information should jurors have during court proceedings to render a just decision? Should politicians know who is donating money to their campaigns? Will scientists draw biased conclusions about drug efficacy when they know more about the patient or study population? The potential for bias in decision-making by physicians, lawyers, politicians, and scientists has been recognized for hundreds of years and drawn attention from media and scholars seeking to understand the role that conflicts of interests and other psychological processes play. However, commonly proposed solutions to biased decision-making, such as transparency (disclosing conflicts) or exclusion (avoiding conflicts) do not directly solve the underlying problem of bias and may have unintended consequences. Robertson and Kesselheim bring together a renowned group of interdisciplinary scholars to consider another way to reduce the risk of biased decision-making: blinding. What are the advantages and limitations of blinding? How can we quantify the biases in unblinded research? Can we develop new ways to blind decision-makers? What are the ethical problems with withholding information from decision-makers in the course of blinding? How can blinding be adapted to legal and scientific procedures and in institutions not previously open to this approach? Fundamentally, these sorts of questions—about who needs to know what—open new doors of inquiry for the design of scientific research studies, regulatory institutions, and courts. The volume surveys the theory, practice, and future of blinding, drawing upon leading authors with a diverse range of methodologies and areas of expertise, including forensic sciences, medicine, law, philosophy, economics, psychology, sociology, and statistics. - Introduces readers to the primary policy issue this book seeks to address: biased decision-making. - Provides a focus on blinding as a solution to bias, which has applicability in many domains. - Traces the development of blinding as a solution to bias, and explores the different ways blinding has been employed. - Includes case studies to explore particular uses of blinding for statisticians, radiologists, and fingerprint examiners, and whether the jurors and judges who rely upon them will value and understand blinding.
