Book Engaging women and men in community based resource management processes in Solomon Islands

Download or read book Engaging women and men in community based resource management processes in Solomon Islands written by Schwarz, A. and published by WorldFish. This book was released on 2014-12-08 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÿGender equity refers to the process of being fair to women and men, in order that women and men can equally access opportunities and life choices regardless of their sex. It has been proposed that local and national management policies and practices can be more effective if they are more gender equitable and better consider the differences in how men and women participate in natural resource use and in the community, taking into account their potentially different goals. The CGIAR Research Program on Aquatic Agricultural Systems (AAS), led by WorldFish, aims to deliver increased food security and income for the millions of people living in and depending on aquatic agricultural systems, and intends to take a gender-transformative approach to integrating gender into research in development. In this case study, WorldFish and The Nature Conservancy have documented emerging lessons, gaps and opportunities to better understand how gender-equitable approaches can be taken into account in community-based resource management.

Book World Heritage Conservation in the Pacific

Download or read book World Heritage Conservation in the Pacific written by Stephanie Clair Price and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the opportunities and challenges associated with the legal protection of World Heritage sites in the Pacific Islands. It argues that the small Pacific representation on the World Heritage List is in part due to a lack of strong legal frameworks for heritage conservation, putting such sites under threat. Providing a comprehensive analysis of the nomination, listing and protection of the Solomon Island World Heritage Site, it examines the implementation of the World Heritage Convention in the Pacific context. It explores how the international community’s broadening interpretation of the notion of ‘outstanding universal value’ has increased the potential for Pacific heritage to be classified as ‘World Heritage’. This book also analyses the protection regime established by the Convention, and the World Heritage Committee’s approach to heritage conservation, identifying challenges associated with the protection of Pacific Island heritage.

Comprising of over 900 islands, Solomon Islands is a sovereign state with a population of over 600,000 people. It is named after the biblical King Solomon and is located east of Papua New Guinea and northwest of Vanuatu. The country has a diverse and unique mix of cultures, with over 70 different languages spoken among its communities. The islands, which are inhabited by Melanesians, Polynesians, and Micronesians, have been inhabited for thousands of years, with evidence of human habitation dating back to 30,000 BC. The capital city, Honiara, is located on the island of Guadalcanal, and the country's main industries include agriculture, logging, and fishing. Despite being a small nation, Solomon Islands has a rich history and culture. It is known for its traditional music, dance, and art, as well as its exploration of the underwater world, with some of the largest and most diverse coral reefs in the world. Solomon Islands also played a significant role in World War II, as it was the site of the Battle of Guadalcanal, one of the major battles in the Pacific theater.
