The solitons evolve from nonlinear changes in the refractive index of the material, due to the light intensity distribution. When the modulation of the index confines the light beam in such a way that diffraction is compensated for exactly, the beam becomes self-trapped, and is called a spatial soliton. The nonlinear effects, which are responsible to soliton formation, are in general Kerr-like effects, causing local index changes proportional to the local light power. The index changes needed for spatial solitons require high power densities, and often exceed 1MWatt/sq.cm. We present here a new type of solitons in space, generated by the photorefractive (PR) effect in the medium. The solitonic waveform modulates the refractive index due to the PR effect, compensates for the diffraction exactly, and causes the light beam to propagate with no spatial change. This specific index modulation is introduced by interference gratings between the pairs of the spatial components (which compose the light beam), that are translated into phase gratings by the PR effect. Since the efficiency of this effect is independent of absolute light intensity, our solitons can be generated even at very moderate light power densities. Moreover, the same solitonic waveform can propagate unchanged in the medium, at very high or very low light intensities.

Book excerpt: In this program, we have studied, experimentally and theoretically, the fundamental properties of photorefractive spatial solitons and the features of the interactions between and among them. We brought the topic of photorefractive solitons to the very front of soliton science and of nonlinear optics. In our work, we have put much emphasis on studying properties and features that are universal to all solitons in nature, even to those in fields that are very remote from optics. We have discovered a family of entirely new solitons: Incoherent Solitons, which can exist in any non-instantaneous nonlinear media in nature. We have shown that solitons interacting in full 3D media manifest particle properties (such as conservation of angular momentum) which a decade ago were thought to be absurd with respect to solitons. Finally, we have demonstrated the feasibility of a list of applications that are unique to photorefractive solitons, the most important ones being (1) nonlinear frequency conversion in soliton-induced waveguides, and (2) fixing 2D solitons into the crystalline lattice of the nonlinear medium: Integrated Optics in 3D. At the beginning of this program, there were not more than 3-4 additional groups in the US studying optical spatial solitons, and not more than 10 world wide. Today, much of it following our work, optical spatial solitons have become a platform for studies of all soliton phenomena, and have attracted more than 50 groups world wide. The best evidence for that in the number of participants in the last Conference on Nonlinear Guided Waves and Their Applications, which was doubled between from the 1996 and 1998 conferences to the 1999 conference.

Book excerpt: It is ironic that the ideas ofNewton, which described a beam of light as a stream ofparticles made it difficult for him to explain things like thin film interference. Yet these particles, called 'photons', have caused the adjective 'photonic' to gain common usage, when referring to optical phenomena. The purist might argue that only when we are confronted by the particle nature of light should we use the word photonics. Equally, the argument goes on, only when we are face-to face with an integrable system, i. e. one that possesses an infinite number of conserved quantities, should we say soliton rather than solitary wave. Scientists and engineers are pragmatic, however, and they are happy to use the word 'soliton' to describe what appears to be an excitation that is humped, multi humped, or localised long enough for some use to be made of it. The fact that such 'solitons' may stick to each other (fuse) upon collision is often something to celebrate for an application, rather than just evidence that, after all, these are not really solitons, in the classic sense. 'Soliton', therefore, is a widely used term with the qualification that we are constantly looking out for deviant behaviour that draws our attention to its solitary wave character. In the same spirit, 'photonics' is a useful generic cover-all noun, even when 'electromagnetic theory' or 'optics' would suffice.

Using the model system of a photorefractive nonlinearity that allows one to simultaneously create and control photonic lattices by light, the author obtains a comprehensive picture of the control of nonlinear and quantum optics phenomena in photonic lattices. He describes and demonstrates experimentally for the first time resonant transitions in two-dimensional hexagonal lattices, including Rabi oscillations and Landau-Zener tunneling, as well as the direct control and exploitation of these transitions. A particular highlight of this thesis is the study of soliton-cluster switching and control of Zener tunneling.
