Book excerpt: In 1978, the European Mechanics Committee and the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique agreed to the organization of an Interna tional Colloquium on the "Mechanical Behavior of Anisotropic Solids". The meeting was held at Villard-de-Lans (near Grenoble, France) from 19th to 22 nd June 1979. The Colloquium considered mechanical aspects of the anisotropy of solids, both initial and induced by permanent deformation, anisotropic hardening and damage, oriented fissuration, etc. Topics concerned mathematical, experimental and engineering aspects of the anisotropy of metals, composites, soils and rocks. The aim of the Colloquium was to bring together experimentalists, theoretecians and engineers interested in various features of mechanical anisotropy, in order to permit an interdisciplinary exchange of understanding, experience and methods. A detailed description of the scope, aim and proposed topics is contained in the Preface. The announcement of the Colloquium attracted a large number of sub mitted contributions. Conforming with the principles of Euromech Colloquia and of the Colloques Internationaux du CNRS, the accepted contributions were limited to 50 communications. A general description of the scientific program is to be found in the Preface. Five general lectures gave state-of-the-art reports concerning some areas of the behavior of anisotropic solids; the 50 communications were divided into 12 sessions dealing with specific topics (see "Contents"). In order to facilitate subsequent contact between the reader and the contributors, full addresses are given in the "List of Authors."

Book excerpt: Preface Adhesion is a phenomenon architects and civil engineers are not very familiar with. In other disciplines knowledge about surface properties and the background of bonding energies is also far from satisfactory; nevertheless there are many important· applications in concrete engineering, where adhesion is necessary for success and durability. These include: - coating and painting - repair of concrete surfaces - bonding of fresh to old concrete - crack injection - glueing of precast elements - glueing of steel to concrete, etc. In 1981 RILEM established the technical committee 52-RAC 'Resin Adherence to Concrete'. The main aims of the committee's work were - to collect research results and practical experiences - to initiate and coordinate research programs - to develop, on a scientific base, test methods for field and for laboratory purposes. One of the results of the committee's work is a state-of-the-art report, which will be presented orally as a General Report at the International Symposium ISAP '86, and will be printed either in the RILEM journal Materials and Structures or separately. Several test recommendations have been elaborated and will be prepared as drafts for the participants ofISAP '86. These are: - direct tensile test - pull-off test - direct shear test - slant shear test - four-point bending test - dynamic loading test - thermal compatibility test (two versions) - injectibility test.

The design of the dams requires application of sound engineering principles and an understanding of the properties of the tailings. This Bulletin provides a framework for classifying different types of tailings, ranging from ultra-fine to coarse, based on their geotechnical properties and provides typical geotechnical parameters for the different tailings types. Technologies for dewatering tailings to reduce the risk of storage continue to be developed and the different technologies, from thickening to filtration, and re-application of old technologies are presented to illustrate the options available and, where appropriate, typical in situ properties. This bulletin is directed towards a wide audience of stakeholders: designers, owners, regulators, communities and various organizations and provides a reference for communicating tailings properties and the benefits and limitations of technologies. All mining operations, and thereby tailings operations, are unique. There is no one-solution-fits-all. Tailings dam designs need to account for site-specific conditions, such as climate, physiography, geochemistry, geomorphology, seismology, mining processes, environment, and community setting, with the application of technologies playing an important role in developing safe, sustainable tailings facilities. Les stériles miniers sont produits à partir du traitement des minerais et sont généralement stockés derrière des barrages en remblai. La conception des barrages nécessite l'application de principes d'ingénierie solides et une compréhension des propriétés des résidus. Ce bulletin fournit un cadre pour classer différents types de résidus, allant de l'ultra-fin au grossier, en fonction de leurs propriétés géotechniques et propose des paramètres géotechniques typiques pour les différentes sortes de résidus. Les technologies d'assèchement des résidus pour réduire le risque de stockage continuent à être développées ; les différentes technologies, de l'épaississement à la filtration, en passant par l’application des anciennes technologies, sont présentées pour illustrer les options disponibles et, le cas échéant, les propriétés in situ typiques.
