Book Solid propellant ignition and unsteady combustion processes

Download or read book Solid propellant ignition and unsteady combustion processes written by Leonard H. Caveny and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research carried out under the grant was aimed at furthering the scientific understanding of nonsteady propellant combustion behavior in rocket motor chambers. Controlled nonsteady flow and burning conditions were produced in laboratory-scale solid rocket motors by developing a device that modulated the throat area of the primary nozzle. Modulation frequencies up to 2400 Hz were obtained. The modulated throat rocket motor is being used to acquire data using AP composite propellant grains. Cold flow tests were used to study the acoustic modes and nozzle discharge characteristics. Computerized techniques were developed for conducting spectral analyses of head-end and nozzle-end pressure data. In addition, the equations describing the nonsteady one-dimensional gas dynamics and propellant combustion were formulated, and a comprehensive numerical solution was developed. The present solution takes into account the couplings among the oscillating nozzle flow, the nonsteady chamber flow, and erosive burning. Since pressure and velocity oscillations can be made to occur and decay in high loading density rocket motors with realistic grain configurations, the experiment is expected to produce propellant/chamber response functions that are relatively easy to interpret, compared to the difficult to interpret T-burner response functions.

Book Transient Combustion in Solid Propellant Cracks

Download or read book Transient Combustion in Solid Propellant Cracks written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one-dimensional theoretical model, incorporating the Noble-Abel dense gas law, has been developed to describe the transient model combustion phenomena inside a propellant crack. The theoretical model can be used to predict wave phenomena, heat transfer from the gas to the propellant surface and associated thermal penetration, flame propagation, and resultant pressurization at various locations along the propellant cavity. Calculations made with the current theoretical model revealed that the internal pressurization rate, pressure gradient, and flame velocity in propellant cracks (for which gases can penetrate) decrease as: the gap width increases, the rocket chamber pressurization rate decreases, and the propellant gasification temperature increases. Additionally, the predicted flame spreading was found to decelerate in a region near the crack tip; this phenomena has been experimentally observed by others.

Book Theory of Solid Propellant Nonsteady Combustion

Download or read book Theory of Solid Propellant Nonsteady Combustion written by Vasily B. Novozhilov and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-08-21 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite significant developments and widespread theoretical and practical interest in the area of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion for the last fifty years, a comprehensive and authoritative text on the subject has not been available. Theory of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion fills this gap by summarizing theoretical approaches to the problem within the framework of the Zeldovich-Novozhilov (ZN-) theory. This book contains equations governing unsteady combustion and applies them systematically to a wide range of problems of practical interest. Theory conclusions are validated, as much as possible, against available experimental data. Theory of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion provides an accurate up-to-date account and perspectives on the subject and is also accompanied by a website hosting solutions to problems in the book.

Book Chemical Rockets

Download or read book Chemical Rockets written by Subramaniam Krishnan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-10 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to discuss, at the graduate level, the methods of performance prediction for chemical rocket propulsion. A pedagogical presentation of such methods has been unavailable thus far and this text, based upon lectures, fills this gap. The first part contains the energy-minimization to calculate the propellant-combustion composition and the subsequent computation of rocket performance. While incremental analysis is for high performance solid motors, equilibrium-pressure analysis is for low performance ones. Both are detailed in the book's second part for the prediction of ignition and tail-off transients, and equilibrium operation. Computer codes, adopting the incremental analysis along with erosive burning effect, are included. The material is encouraged to be used and presented at lectures. Senior undergraduate and graduate students in universities, as well as practicing engineers and scientists in rocket industries, form the readership.

Book Transient Ignition Mechanisms of Confined Solid Propellants Under Rapid Pressurization

Download or read book Transient Ignition Mechanisms of Confined Solid Propellants Under Rapid Pressurization written by Kenneth K. Kuo and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive theoretical model was formulated to study the transient ignition mechanisms of solid propellants under rapidly varying pressure conditions. The model considers a two-dimensional geometry to describe the ignition of a heterogeneous propellant. The rate of pressurization has been included in the energy equation to simulate rocket motor ignition conditions. The model does not make any a priori assumption of solid-phase, heterogeneous, or gas-phase ignition mechanism. Chemical reactions are considered in the gas phase, at the interface as well as in the subsurface. The most up-to-date chemical kinetics information is included in the model. A generalized ignition criterion has been proposed which allows ignition to occur at any site.

Book Response of Three Types of Transient Combustion Models to Gun Pressurization

Download or read book Response of Three Types of Transient Combustion Models to Gun Pressurization written by Carl W. Nelson and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three types of models for transient solid propellant combustion are applied under an imposed pressure history of a 105 mm tank gun. The three types are: (1) dp/dt dependence, (2) Quasi Steady Heat Feedback One Dimensional (QSHOD), and (3) Zeldovich. Each predicts a qualitatively different response for the same propellant thermal and thermodynamic properties under the same imposed pressure history. (Author).
