Book Propellant Grain Design

Download or read book Propellant Grain Design written by S. Scippa and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lecture presents a general overview of the current methods used at SNIA BPD in designing solid rocket motor propellant grains. The internal ballistics aspect in grain design is emphasized. An overview of what are the general requirements (Thrust vs time curve, volumetric constraints, etc.), the available technologies (propellant types, manufacturing processes, etc.) and the method for selecting the most appropriate one is presented. Then, the methods used for grain design are summarized. The lecture deals, in particular, with the methods for propellant formulation choice, design of internal geometry, propellant characterization (performances, internal ballistics, etc.). An analysis of the predictability factors (various mechanisms that can affect the thrust curve, i.e.: erosive burning, hump factor, etc.), and how they can be taken into account for contingency planning is reported. The experimental tests commonly used for grain design validation are summarized.

Book Chemical Rockets

Download or read book Chemical Rockets written by Subramaniam Krishnan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-10 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to discuss, at the graduate level, the methods of performance prediction for chemical rocket propulsion. A pedagogical presentation of such methods has been unavailable thus far and this text, based upon lectures, fills this gap. The first part contains the energy-minimization to calculate the propellant-combustion composition and the subsequent computation of rocket performance. While incremental analysis is for high performance solid motors, equilibrium-pressure analysis is for low performance ones. Both are detailed in the book's second part for the prediction of ignition and tail-off transients, and equilibrium operation. Computer codes, adopting the incremental analysis along with erosive burning effect, are included. The material is encouraged to be used and presented at lectures. Senior undergraduate and graduate students in universities, as well as practicing engineers and scientists in rocket industries, form the readership.

Book SOLID PROPELLANT ROCKET MOTOR INTERNAL BALLISTICS COMPUTER PROGRAM VOLUME 1 PROGRAM MANUAL

Download or read book SOLID PROPELLANT ROCKET MOTOR INTERNAL BALLISTICS COMPUTER PROGRAM VOLUME 1 PROGRAM MANUAL written by and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a FORTRAN IV digital computer program developed to calculate internal ballistic performance of solid propellant rocket motors with high burning rates, short burning durations, and high vehicle accelerations. Forked wagon wheel, conventional wagon wheel, standard star, slotted-cone, and circular port monolithic and segmented grain designs may be considered. Accurate description of an inert sliver in the cylindrical section is allowed for all but the forked wagon wheel grain design. The effects of anisotropic burning of the propellant may be considered. The storage of mass and momentum (capacitance effects) and vehicle acceleration are included in the internal gas dynamic equations. Ignition transients may be calculated. Tabular input of the motor grain description is available for special grain configurations that cannot be described by the program geometry constants. Motor performance parameters such as delivered and vacuum thrust and total impulse, fore-head and aft-head total pressure, nozzle discharge flow, fore-head and aft- head total pressure integrals, pitch and roll moments of inertia, center of gravity locations, burn surface area, and weight of propellant remaining are printed for each time Interval. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, a translation of the French title Technologie des Propergols Solides, offers otherwise unavailable information on the subject of solid propellants and their use in rocket propulsion. The fundamentals of rocket propulsion are developed in chapter one and detailed descriptions of concepts are covered in the following chapters. Specific design methods and the theoretical physics underlying them are presented, and finally the industrial production of the propellant itself is explained. The material used in the book has been collected from different countries, as the development of this field has occurred separately due to the classified nature of the subject. Thus the reader not only has an overall picture of solid rocket propulsion technology but a comprehensive view of its different developmental permutations worldwide.

Book ANALYSIS OF 3 D GRAIN BURNBACK OF SOLID PROPELLANT ROCKET MOTORS AND VERIFICATION WITH ROCKET MOTOR TESTS

Download or read book ANALYSIS OF 3 D GRAIN BURNBACK OF SOLID PROPELLANT ROCKET MOTORS AND VERIFICATION WITH ROCKET MOTOR TESTS written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid propellant rocket motors are the most widely used propulsion systems for military applications that require high thrust to weight ratio for relatively short time intervals. Very wide range of magnitude and duration of the thrust can be obtained from solid propellant rocket motors by making some small changes at the design of the rocket motor. The most effective of these design criteria is the geometry of the solid propellant grain. So the most important step in designing the solid propellant rocket motor is determination of the geometry of the solid propellant grain. The performance prediction of the solid rocket motor can be achieved easily if the burnback steps of the rocket motor are known. In this study, grain burnback analysis for some 3-D grain geometries is investigated. The method used is solid modeling of the propellant grain for some predefined intervals of burnback. In this method, the initial grain geometry is modeled parametrically using commercial software. For every burn step, the parameters are adapted. So the new grain geometry for every burnback step is modeled. By analyzing these geometries, burn area change of the grain geometry is obtained. Using this data and internal ballistics parameters, the performance of the solid propellant rocket motor is achieved. To verify the outputs obtained from this study, rocket motor tests are performed. The results obtained from this study shows that, the procedure that was developed, can be successfully used for the preliminary design of a solid propellant rocket motor where a lot of different geometries are examined.

Book Integrated Structural and Ballistic Design Curves for Star Perforated Propellant Grains

Download or read book Integrated Structural and Ballistic Design Curves for Star Perforated Propellant Grains written by Adrian M. Messner and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preliminary design data pertaining to the structural and internal ballistic design of star-perforated solid rocket grains are presented in a novel integrated format. Measures of volumetric loading, propellant silver, and burning uniformity are depicted for star geometries of 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 points. Structural characteristics are related to these performance parameters through a series of transparent overlay graphs that are designed to be superimposed on the ballistic data graphs. Structuring of the data in this manner enables the designer to determine visually on a single graph the combined ballistic and structural characteristics that best meet design requirements for preliminary design purposes. Instructions for using the data presented are illustrated through examples problems. To facilitate the structural interpretations, tables of typical structural loads and average propellant properties are included. The technical basis for the parametric data is described in detail, and the accuracy of the results is related to previous photoelastic and computer analyses. (Author).
