Book U S Army Workshop on Solid Propellant Ignition and Combustion Modeling

Download or read book U S Army Workshop on Solid Propellant Ignition and Combustion Modeling written by Martin S. Miller and published by . This book was released on 1997-07 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A workshop with the objective to view the current state of the art of energetic-material combustion models within the context of future requirements of gun interior-ballistics (IB) models was held at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL), Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD, on 9 and 10 April 96. The workshop was motivated by the recognition that modeling and simulation will be an essential cost-saving and time-saving tool in the design, development, testing, and evaluation of future gun-propulsion systems, and that, under current funding constraints, research on the underlying fundamentals must be carefully directed toward the most critical technology barriers. To facilitate this process, a perspective was presented on the fundamental physics and chemistry currently utilized in IB codes (XKTC, etc.) and the extensions planned for advanced codes (the NGEN family). The state of the art in fundamental descriptions of energetic-material combustion was then summarized and discussed with the intent of giving focus to those issues that could impact the future development needs of the IB research community.

Book Solid Propellant Combustion Modeling

Download or read book Solid Propellant Combustion Modeling written by George D. Sammons and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report covers the first 15 months of a continuing study on construction of a comprehensive mathematical model of composite solid propellant combustion, with emphasis on work during the past 12 months since reporting on the early efforts at the meeting last year. The liquid layer believed to exist on burning ammonium perchlorate has been treated in a manner similar to that described previously. Depth of penetration of a thermal wave is calculated and this value is multiplied by the surface area of oxidizer on the burning propellant surface. The surface is calculated in the computer program for use in other equations. Total volume of the liquid layer derived in this manner is then used to calculate the thermal contribution to surface temperature. (Modified author abstract).

Book A Fresh Look at the Classical Approach to Homogeneous Solid Propellant Combustion Modeling

Download or read book A Fresh Look at the Classical Approach to Homogeneous Solid Propellant Combustion Modeling written by Martin S. Miller and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term 'classical approach' is applied to those modeling efforts that use the experimental burning rate as the sole criterion for validation. The utility and limitations of this approach are discussed. It is argued that previous applications of the Classical Approach have too narrowly focused on a numerical match between model and actual burning rates. The result is an incomplete understanding of the full range of burning rate behavior implied by the basic idealization of the burning mechanism. Since a comparison of broad trends is of greatest heuristic interest, five different propellant data sets are developed which span a wide range of kinetics values. Accurate calculations of the burning rate pressure and temperature dependence are made and parallels drawn with actual propellant behavior. Likely weaknesses in the basic idealization are then identified.
