Book excerpt: This book, A Fountain Of Truth, is a result of my personal need for a book that would tell me the answer to many questions about who God is, what He is all about, what He has done, how old He is, what does He look like, what language does He speak, what are His goals, how and when will He accomplish these goals, where did I come from, where am I going, and what does He want from me? All these questions and many more are answered by the great "I Am", Himself. It is also given in the personal accounts of many historic role models. When I found the answers to all of these questions, then I realized that I had actually found the Fountain Of Truth. My restless spirit was satisfied and contented. I am no longer restless and searching for the answers to the questions that had caused me to feel insecure and alone. A great peace has settled over me like a great comforting blanket directly from the great God of the Bible. I believe God offers everyone a "God Blankie". The search is now over for me. I am now basking in the wonderful glow of truth. I believe the search can be over for everyone. The great security blanket is available to anyone who will read and believe God's answer book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New Look at John Calvin John Calvin was born in France in 1509. He was one of the greatest church reformers of the sixteenth century. At age twenty-seven, he published the first edition of his Institutes of the Christian Religion. He went to Geneva to do his difficult but epoch-making Christian work in 1536 and died in 1564. He preached and lectured more than four hundred times each year, and produced fifty-nine volumes of the Calvini Opera. In addition to being a great theologian he was a serious church worker who, with complete self-dedication, persistently labored for the effectiveness of the mission of the Church with his great passion to follow the direction of the Holy Spirit. Here the author provides rich materials for people to understand how and why Calvin was so passionate about the success of the mission of the Church and the necessity of following the direction of the Holy Spirit. The Author David S. Chen, B.Th., B.D., Th.M., S.T.M., Th.D., was a professor of systematic theology, Christian ethics, and world religions at Taiwan Theological Seminary in Taipei, Taiwan. Towards the end of his teaching he was its president. Afterwards, he served the First Reformed Church in Ridgewood, New Jersey for twenty years. After his retirement, he continued to preach for many Christian congregations. Book Confessing and Commending the Faith

Download or read book Confessing and Commending the Faith written by Alan P.F. Sell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-09-01 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Christianity is a way and not simply a theory, commending the faith to others is an activity in which every Christian participates. Confessing and Commending the Faith discusses the presuppositions which underlie the intellectual commendation of Christianity in the face of the philosophical challenges of the present day.Following his earlier books, John Locke and the Eighteenth-Century Divines and Philosophical Idealism and Christian Belief, Alan Sell proposes a way of proceeding with Christian apologetics in the twenty-first century. He discusses what Christians wish to proclaim, asks whether these claims are reasonable and examines what is involved in the intellectual commendation of the Christian faith.Confessing and Commending the Faith makes extensive use of the historical tradition of apologetics and brings this work to bear on contemporary questions such as the meaning, use and reference of religious language, and the question of transcendence in relation to history. Alan Sell argues that if the intellectual commendation of Christianity's claim to truth is to be viable, contemporary apologetics must draw upon reason, revelation and experience to do justice to Christianity's basic confession of Christ as Saviour and Lord.

Book excerpt: Karl Barth (1886-1968) is generally acknowledged to be the most important European Protestant theologian of the twentieth century, a figure whose importance for Christian thought compares with that of Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, John Calvin, Martin Luther, and Friedrich Schleiermacher. Author of the Epistle to the Romans, the multi-volume Church Dogmatics, and a wide range of other works - theological, exegetical, historical, political, pastoral, and homiletic - Barth has had significant and perduring influence on the contemporary study of theology and on the life of contemporary churches. In the last few decades, his work has been at the centre of some of the most important interpretative, critical, and constructive developments in in the fields of Christian theology, philosophy of religion, and religious studies. The Oxford Handbook of Karl Barth is the most expansive guide to Barth's work published to date. Comprising over forty original chapters, each of which is written by an expert in the field, the Handbook provides rich analysis of Barth's life and context, advances penetrating interpretations of the key elements of his thought, and opens and charts new paths for critical and constructive reflection. In the process, it seeks to illuminate the complex and challenging world of Barth's theology, to engage with it from multiple perspectives, and to communicate something of the joyful nature of theology as Barth conceived it. It will serve as an indispensable resource for undergraduates, postgraduates, academics, and general readers for years to come.

Book Now Concerning Spiritual Things

Download or read book Now Concerning Spiritual Things written by Fitzroy John Willis and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a pluralistic world of competing truth claims, how can one discern what is truly representative of God? How can we live and communicate what is authentically "spiritual?" How do we bridge the religious impasse between believers and a post-Christendom and pluralistic context where individuals may consider themselves to be spiritual, yet are offended by the person of Jesus? Can relativism be an effective means of evaluating truth from falsehood? What role should race, gender, and socioeconomic background play in society and the church? These are just a few of the questions this study addresses in presenting a more balanced, dialogical, and biblical criterion for authentic spirituality. The insights on how to discern, live, and communicate what is authentically spiritual are significant for interreligious and ecumenical dialogue across denominations. These insights contribute a way to more effectively communicate divine truths to all, for it is conversant with various sources of knowledge about God and is accountable to feedback from these sources of truth. For example, tacit knowledge such as that derived from faith, and spiritual gifts, as well as rational, or philosophical claims to truth, along with Western, Eastern, and Southern modes of thinking, are all incorporated.

Book Responsible Belief

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert M. Frazier
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2015-10-23
  • ISBN : 1498225004
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Responsible Belief written by Robert M. Frazier and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responsible Belief tackles the problem of fixing the tenacity of believers in forming, holding, and modifying beliefs. In conversation with the history of philosophy and religion, the author attempts to expose and refute some aspects of the dominant epistemological framework for engaging belief fixation and improvement. In contrast to this framework, Dr. Frazier provides a model of a responsible believing agent rooted in an ethic of the intellectual virtue tradition. In dialogue with Aristotle, he proposes three principal virtues, which he calls the generative, the transmissive, and the metamorphic. The author's alternative framework includes an examination of the role that intellectual passions play in the melioration of belief. Responsible Belief considers whether Doestoevsky's claim that "Beauty will save the world" has a place in discussions of belief formation and revision and offers an account of its vitality in addressing the concerns raised in the book.
