Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A special edition of an outstanding academic study Firth's 'Cromwell's Army' has long been recognised as an essential classic. It describes in detail the structure, formations, equipment and practices of the Parliamentarian Army as it fought in the English Civil War, Ireland and elsewhere, and also examines the English army prior to the Civil War and describes the creation of the New Model Army. What makes this edition of Firth special is that the author makes reference to the illustrations by Francis Grose, of clothing, equipment and drill of Cromwell's Army, that he was familiar with but which did not appear in the original editions of this book. For the first time this Leonaur edition includes Grose's illustrations in the text for easy reference by modern readers. The cornerstone of the Parliamentarian soldier's cause was a matter of faith and Leonaur has therefore also included in this edition two essential facsimiles, 'The Soldier's Pocket Bible' and 'The Soldier's Catechism, ' which were specially created for the men of the Parliamentarian Army. These elements combine with Firth's text to make this new edition a unique, comprehensive and academic volume that will be an invaluable addition to the libraries of students of the period. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

  • Author : Malcolm Wanklyn
  • Publisher : Pen and Sword
  • Release : 2019-05-30
  • ISBN : 1473898382

Download or read book Parliament s Generals written by Malcolm Wanklyn and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of The Warrior Generals examines the machinations of the Parlimentarian military leadership during the English Civil War. Waller, Essex, Fairfax, Manchester, and Cromwell are among the most famous military men who fought for Parliament during the English Civil War. While their performance as generals has been explored in numerous books on the campaigns, comparatively little has been written by military historians about the political aspects of high command, namely the ever-changing and often fractious relationship with the English Parliament and its executive committees. With this book, Malcolm Wanklyn sheds light on the qualities these men employed in their attempts to achieve their military and political aspirations. In a series of insightful chapters, he follows their careers through the course of the conflict, focusing on their successes and failures in battle and the consequences for their reputations and influence. The author examines dissatisfaction with the leadership of Essex, Manchester, and Waller in the inconclusive early campaigns, as well as the contrasting strengths of Fairfax and Cromwell. This reassessment demonstrates how these commanders managed promotions, outmaneuvered their fellow generals, and controlled their subordinates.

Book The Rise of the New Model Army

Download or read book The Rise of the New Model Army written by Mark A Kishlansky and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983-04-29 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a meticulously-researched and highly controversial study of the origins and development of parliamentary and extra-parliamentary politics during the English Civil War. Professor Kishlansky challenges the fundamental assumptions upon which all previous interpretations of this period have been based. It is his contention that during the years 1643-6, Parliament operated on a model of consensus rather than on one of party conflict as has been traditionally assumed. The New Model Army was thus the product of compromise and, Professor Kishlansky argues, it embodied the ideology that created it. The political invention of the Army occurred only after the machine of consensus politics had broken down with Parliament. The New Model Army, perpetuating the belief in consensus and balance but also representing its own interests, then became one of many factions competing for dominance.

Download or read book The Rump Parliament 1648 53 written by Blair Worden and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1977-05-05 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rump Parliament was brought to power in 1648 by Pride's Purge and forcibly dissolved by Oliver Cromwell in 1653. This book is a detailed account of the intervening years. Dr Worden concentrates particularly on the Rump's policies in the contentious fields of legal, religious and electoral reform; its attempts to live down its revolutionary origins, to disown its more radical supporters, to conciliate those Puritans alienated by the purge and the King's death, and to re-create the Roundhead party of the 1640s. He examines the Rump's struggles for survival in the face of the Royalist threat between 1649 and 1651, and its fatal quarrel with the Cromwellian army thereafter. A concluding chapter deals with the Rump's forcible dissolution. This novel and challenging interpretation of the most dramatic phase of the English Revolution will interest all specialists in seventeenth-century political and constitutional history.

Book excerpt: The entry of the Scots into the English Civil War (1642–1651) on 19 January 1644 on the side of Parliament radically changed the balance of power in the North of England. The Royalists in the North were forced onto the defensive and besieged in York. In a bold march Prince Rupert outmanoeuvred his enemies and relieved York without a shot being fired. However, when Rupert met the allied army in battle on Marston Moor on 2 July his cavalry was defeated by Cromwell's Ironsides who then turned on the Royalist infantry. The result was a hard-fought but catastrophic defeat; the Royalist army was crushed and their forces driven from the north of England.

Book Cromwell s Legacy

Book excerpt: Now available in paperback, Cromwell's Legacy is an exciting collection of essays by scholars who are well-known in their fields of research, most of whom have a proven track record of making their scholarship accessible to a wide student and general readership. This study examines different ways in which Cromwell's life and work impacted on Britain and the rest of the world after his death. Each contributor examines Cromwell's legacy, including not only the important central question of Cromwell's impact on the religious, military and political life of Britain after his death but also Britain's relations with Europe and future developments in both North and South America. The structure of this book has been designed to give as wide a coverage of time and place as possible. This book not only sheds light on an aspect of Cromwellian studies that has been comparatively neglected, it will also stimulate further work on this topic.
