Book War Songs Classic Reprint

Download or read book War Songs Classic Reprint written by Christopher Stone and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Songs As the Valkyrie ride exultant up northern skies to Valhalla, bearing fallen heroes home, spurning fear, pain, and death beneath the hoof-strokes of their galloping horses, the President of the Peace Conference reclines in his opera-box - and yawns. The triumphant rush through the air; the clash of sword and hollow reverberating clang of brazen buckler, the storm and wild joy of battle are in his ears - but he hears not. The sounds are not for him, nor are the shadows that take form and gather fast to the summons of that wild music. Not for him is the phantasmagoria of spectral squadrons wheeling and charging with flashing sabres and fluttering red lunghis across the stony plain until they plunge headlong into that cloud of dust and smoke which closes like a curtain behind them. Not for him does the forlorn hope crouch behind the rocky outcrop of the hill, they and their boyish leader with the haunting eyes. Upon their stern faces the cold grey light of early dawn grows momentarily stronger - now, by Heaven, is the time! Book Soldier Poets

Download or read book Soldier Poets written by Galloway Kyle and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soldier Poets: Songs of the Fighting Men For one may claim that this volume represents the soldier as poet rather than the poet as soldier. It is typical of that intensification of feeling and concentration of expression developed by military service in the defence of country under extraordinary conditions which have yielded a surprising volume of fine poetry. "I know of no one to compare him to but the Archangel Michael" was said of the poet-paladin Roland. The noble Achilles of the West has to-day many brave peers who face battle with a song, Michaels and Rolands of civilization. Any objection that, since practically all men of active age have been drawn into the Army willy-nilly, the term "soldier poet" is ambiguous, has already been met. Even a cursory glance at this volume will show that the authors are soldiers whose military service dates back in most cases to the early days of the war, if not earlier, and not conscript poetasters who have found a new stimulant to jaded literary exercises. The note of pessimism and decadence is absent, together with the flamboyant and hectic, the morose and the mawkish. Book Idle Songs of an Idle Soldier Classic Reprint

Download or read book Idle Songs of an Idle Soldier Classic Reprint written by George M. Moreland and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Idle Songs of an Idle Soldier These verses are the product of an idle soldier, as the title indicates, and are submitted, not as gems of thought which will endure till the end of Time, but simply as a fancy of the author to see what the world would think of these verses which have been jotted down all the way from New York to the Philippines and from the Mexican Gulf to the Great Lakes. If they possess merit, I am glad; if they do not, my only excuse is that I did the best I could; angels can do no more. If they should be the cause of making one person's life contain one ray more of sunshine or making one moment of one life less sad I shall feel that my labors have not been in vain. Book Contingent Ditties and Other Soldier Songs of the Great War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Contingent Ditties and Other Soldier Songs of the Great War Classic Reprint written by Frank S. Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contingent Ditties, and Other Soldier Songs of the Great War In January last of the present year Sergeant Frank Brown called at my office in Covent Garden with a packet of poems under his arm. His name was not unknown to me, owing to the fact that he had submitted some of his work to the literary critic of the above paper, who had in turn drawn my attention to it. Brown had come to England with the first Canadian Contingent, holding the position of Sergeant in the Third Company of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. At the time of our correspondence his regiment had proceeded to France, but the soldier-poet, much to his disgust, had been left behind, temporarily unfit through an influenza attack. His first letters to me were written from Lark Hill Hospital, Salisbury Plain. Fair, slight but sturdy, keen-eyed, self-con fident but unassuming; such is my impression of the young soldier who came into my room on that grey January morning. He was the type of the British soldier: healthy, cheerful, untroubled by mental subtlety or overweening ambition, but willing to square brain and brawn with the general effort towards the attainment of an end known to be righteous and certain. All this was evident from the external view, but the intimacy of conversation revealed exceptional characteristics. It was evident that Sergeant Brown resembled the admirable average type of British soldier only by an effort of the will, born, probably, of an equally British and equally admirable objection to being thought remark able. Book Songs of the Army of the Night Classic Reprint

Download or read book Songs of the Army of the Night Classic Reprint written by Francis Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of the Army of the Night That Francis Adams' Songs of the Army of the Night, a book which is a deliberate challenge and menace to all established opinions on the matters with which it deals, should be now entering on a third and enlarged edition, is an event not devoid of welcome and gladdening significance for those who, in the gloom of the present social turmoil, are look ing for the dawn of a brighter and purer day. Origin ally published in Australia in 1888, the Songs (with a few slight omissions) were reproduced in England in 1890; and in spite of the tacit contempt or open hostility with which they were naturally received by the orthodox press, and a total lack of the indis pensable literary log-rolling, they have won a gradual acceptance by sheer virtue of the faith and fire that are at the core of them. In the present issue the lines which were cancelled in 1890 have been mostly restored, while various alterations and additlons have been introduced by the author him self, who carefully revised the book for this purpose a short time before his death. Book More Songs by the Fighting Men

Download or read book More Songs by the Fighting Men written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from More Songs by the Fighting Men: Soldier Poets We builded better than we knew when we issued the original volume as the climax of our proud association with the soldier poets it was a greater thing than we were then aware of. No literary work of our day has possessed so much genetic force or been of greater in uence. It was well said that Soldier Poets was of greater service to the Allied cause in America than many Blue Books and specially prepared statements: it showed the high clean spirit of ardent, generous youth engaged on a new Crusade. These songs before sunrise gave fresh vitality to poetry and were welcomed by a nation on the eve of rebirth as the promise of a greater intensity of living, a finer perception of beauty, a clearer vision of the undying Splendour after the weary days in which life and art had become dreary and meaningless to the multi tude. Now the birth-throes have become more severe, the spiritual quickening more accentuated, more and more of the poems are personal threnodies, and the sentinel graves of the Poetry Review young men who responded to the call in 1914 now consecrate the long line from Nieuport to Basra. They are a more glorious and more numerous company than the Elizabethans, with whom, in the great comradeship beyond the grave, they still march, an invisible army, with their brothers-in arms who continue the material and spiritual warfare here in the esh, inspiring and directing the fight that will not end with the war.
