Book excerpt: If you strip away the rosy language of “school-business partnership,” “win-win situation,” “giving back to the community,” and the like, what you see when you look at corporate marketing activities in the schools is example after example of the exploitation of children for financial gain. Over the long run the financial benefit marketing in schools delivers to corporations rests on the ability of advertising to “brand” students and thereby help insure that they will be customers for life. This process of “branding” involves inculcating the value of consumption as the primary mechanism for achieving happiness, demonstrating success, and finding fulfillment. Along the way, “branding” children – just like branding cattle – inflicts pain. Yet school districts, desperate for funding sources, often eagerly welcome marketers and seem not to recognize the threats that marketing brings to children’s well-being and to the integrity of the education they receive. Given that all ads in school pose some threat to children, it is past time for considering whether marketing activities belong in school. Schools should be ad-free zones.

Download or read book Sold Out written by James Rickards and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-12-06 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the man who predicted the worst economic crisis in US history comes Jim Rickards’ second prediction – the collapse of our global economy. The supply chain crisis is coming to a head. Today, your favorite products are missing from store shelves, caught in supply chain limbo somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. But what does this supply chain disruption look like six months, or even three years, from now? While we hope that post-pandemic recovery will absolve these issues, the reality is that digital currency, meme stonks, and social media can’t solve the age-old problem of producing and moving physical goods across oceans and continents. According to Jim Rickards, consumer frustration is only the tip of a very large, menacing iceberg that threatens global economic collapse. In Sold Out, Rickards shares his predictions for our post-pandemic future and outlines how consumers and business owners can get ahead of the collapse. You’ll learn how energy shortages in China – fueled by the trade war with Australia – are disrupting the steel market and forcing entire factories to shut down. You’ll also learn how rising inflation will ultimately lead to deflation in a few short years – as consumer spending eventually tanks due to higher taxes, excessive debt, and increased layoffs – and why such economic conditions will closely resemble the 1930s. Finally, Rickards will look at the future of money, including the erasure of the American dollar itself. Our global economy faces unprecedented challenges in the next few months. But whether we sink or swim depends on how prepared we are – and what we do now to thwart the coming collapse.

Book Sold Out US Foreign Policy Iraq the Kurds and the Cold War

Download or read book Sold Out US Foreign Policy Iraq the Kurds and the Cold War written by Bryan R. Gibson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the ways in which US policy toward Iraq was dictated by America's broader Cold War strategy between 1958 and 1975. While most historians have focused on “hot” Cold War conflicts such as Cuba, Vietnam, and Afghanistan, few have recognized Iraq's significance as a Cold War battleground. This book argues that US decisions and actions were designed to deny the Soviet Union influence over Iraq and to create a strategic base in the oil-rich Gulf region. Using newly available primary sources and interviews, this book reveals new details on America's decision-making toward and actions against Iraq during the height of the Cold War and shows where Iraq fits into the broader historiography of the Cold War in the Middle East. Further, it raises important questions about widely held misconceptions of US-Iraqi relations, such as the CIA's alleged involvement in the 1963 Ba'thist coup and the theory that the US sold out the Kurds in 1975.

Book Sellout

Download or read book Sellout written by Dan Ozzi and published by Mariner Books. This book was released on 2021 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From celebrated music writer Dan Ozzi comes a comprehensive chronicle of the punk music scene's evolution from the early nineties to the mid-aughts, following eleven bands as they dissolved, "sold out," and rose to surprise stardom. From its inception, punk music has been identified by two factors: its proximity to "authenticity," and its reliance on an antiestablishment ethos. Yet, in the mid- to late '90s, major record labels sought to capitalize on punk's rebellious undertones, leading to a schism in the scene: to accept the cash flow of the majors, or stick to indie cred?Sellout chronicles the evolution of the punk scene during this era, focusing on prominent bands as they experienced the last "gold rush" of the music industry. Within it, music writer Dan Ozzi follows the rise of successful bands like Green Day and Jimmy Eat World, as well as the implosion of groups like Jawbreaker and At the Drive-In, who buckled under the pressure of their striving labels. Featuring original interviews and personal stories from members of eleven of modern punk's most (in)famous bands, Sellout is the history of the evolution of the music industry, and a punk rock lover's guide to the chaotic darlings of the post-grunge era. Book Selling Out a Superpower

Download or read book Selling Out a Superpower written by Ronald R. Pollina and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2011-03-08 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1968, there were sixty-two lobbyists in Washington; today there are thirty-four thousand, outnumbering members of Congress and their staffers two to one. By 2008, these lobbyists were spending approximately $8.2 million for influence per day. Few, if any, of these lobbyists represent the majority of Americans in the middle class. So it’s not surprising, given these statistics, that real median household income in America has stagnated for over a decade. This hard-hitting book documents that a combination of special interest groups and their army of money-peddling lobbyists, along with government mismanagement of business and the economy by both parties, have betrayed the American middle and lower classes for the last twenty years. The result is a host of misguided laws and policies that have driven jobs and whole industries offshore, never to return. The author takes issue with those who emphasize the potential benefits of globalization without taking notice of its many negative effects on American society. He also argues that inept policy threatens to derail the American economy permanently and that our economic malaise is more than a short-term reaction to a financial market collapse or global market forces. He cites critical areas where changes must be made to reverse the negative trend: • Improving our 1950s-era educational system to produce a workforce able to compete for 21st-century jobs. • Reform of tax codes that have been driving companies and jobs offshore. We are currently a nation that manufactures practically nothing! • Weaning all levels of government away from deficit spending, which drains economic power • Pursuing free trade that also means fair trade. • Ending the cycle of credit-card debt and all-too-easy mortgage credit to finance ultimately unaffordable lifestyles. • Making the United States more business friendly, so companies will grow and provide desperately needed jobs here at home. The author warns that unless we implement these and other recommended changes, the American economy will inevitably decline while China, India, and other up-and-coming nations ascend. He maintains that all is not lost. If we follow the course he sets, we can reinvigorate and renew our economy, rebuild America’s greatness, create 21st-century jobs, and more. This book provides a roadmap for reclaiming American preeminence.
