Book excerpt: Beth Ryder’s dangerously sexy and seemingly all-powerful boss has disappeared, leaving an increasingly desperate group of Nolanders — and one inept Second — in charge of policing other-worldly activity across much of North America. What better time for a legendary monster to emerge from the Second Emanation and make New York City its hunting ground? But little does Beth know that dealing with the voracious Thirsting Ground will pale in comparison to a shocking betrayal that threatens to destroy her new life among the Nolanders. Solatium is Book 2 of the Emanations series. The first book, Nolander, is available at no cost. The Emanations Series Of all the beings that have lived on Earth, what if just a few had the power to make new realities, according to their desires? What would they create? The Second Emanation: a shadow world where ancient creatures persist, where humanity's dominance is far less certain, where wonder competes with horror. A world like an autumn forest, its realities as multiple and layered as fallen leaves. The world that gives us our gods. In Becca Mills's Emanations series, this strange and magical world crosses paths with a seemingly ordinary young woman from the American Midwest. It'll never be the same again. Book excerpt: "e;Recognising the multi-faceted nature of this Scots law, Francis McManus and Eleanor Russell have produced this all-encompasing guide to delict. With numerous case studies and questions for discussion after each chapter, this is essential reading for all students encountering delict for the first time as well as practitioners who require a ready reference for their practice. The Scots law of delict encompasses a vast array of legal sources and contradictions. Many elements are modern and highly developed while others remain ancient and obscure. The majority of delictual principles are case law driven yet, increasingly, legislation plays a part. Further, although the concept of delict is limited to the Scottish jurisdiction, private international law cannot be ignored. "e;

Download or read book Iniuria and the Common Law written by Eric Descheemaeker and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-07-18 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The delict of iniuria is among the most sophisticated products of the Roman legal tradition. The original focus of the delict was assault, although iniuria-literally a wrong or unlawful act-indicated a very wide potential scope. Yet it quickly grew to include sexual harassment and defamation, and by the first century CE it had been re-oriented around the concept of contumelia so as to incorporate a range of new wrongs, including insult and invasion of privacy. In truth, it now comprised all attacks on personality. It is the Roman delict of iniuria which forms the foundation of both the South African and-more controversially-Scots laws of injuries to personality. On the other hand, iniuria is a concept formally alien to English law. But as its title suggests, this book of essays is representative of a species of legal scholarship best described as 'oxymoronic comparative law', employing a concept peculiar to one legal tradition in order to interrogate another where, apparently, it does not belong. Addressing a series of doctrinal puzzles within the law of assault, defamation and breach of privacy, it considers in what respects the Roman delict of iniuria overlaps with its modern counterparts in England, Scotland and South Africa; the differences and similarities between the analytical frameworks employed in the ancient and modern law; and the degree to which the Roman proto-delict points the way to future developments in each of these three legal systems.
