The lack of an atmosphere, intrinsic weather cycles and other internal processes have led to the preservation of their general characteristics over hundreds of millions of years. They are a snapshot of the early stages of the Solar System. By studying them, we can better understand how planets, including Earth, formed. Moreover, it has been suggested that the building blocks of life were delivered to Earth from asteroids and comets. Evidence of organic molecules, including amino acids, found on asteroids could be crucial to understanding the origin of life. Asteroids also possess large reservoirs of valuable minerals. Understanding their composition and accurately determining their mineralogy could be key as space exploration furthers towards in situ resource utilization missions and resource exploitation. The interplanetary space in our Solar System is a harsh environment teeming with energetic particles, dust, and electromagnetic radiation. Airless bodies do not have an atmosphere--or their atmosphere is too thin--to absorb, reflect, and filter out particle bombardment and electromagnetic radiation. The surfaces of airless bodies are directly exposed to this harsh environment over geological timescales, which gradually alters their properties, in a process called space weathering. These changes are reflected in remote sensing data obtained from airless bodies. Understanding space weathering is important to accurately interpret data from these observations. The study of space weathering--and airless bodies in general--uses a combination of remote sensing, computer simulations, study of meteorites and telluric minerals, laboratory simulations and in limited cases, in situ analysis and sample return analysis. Laboratory-based studies are a remarkable tool that enable the use of characterization techniques that are unavailable for remote analysis. Particularly with laboratory simulations of space weathering, mineral-particle interactions can be studied. Conducting laboratory simulations is nonetheless challenging. Experiments must be carefully designed to reproduce the conditions at the surface of airless bodies with as much fidelity as possible, to produce results that can be translated to the interpretation of natural phenomena. This work focuses on the systematic design of an experimental protocol to carry out laboratory simulations of solar wind-driven space weathering. The protocol covers the sample preparation, processing and analysis. In this protocol, the samples are prepared in a glovebox and transferred to the experimental facility in a custom designed sample suitcase to prevent atmospheric contamination. There, the simulations of space weathering driven by solar wind ions are carried out by conducting ion beam irradiation the minerals, in combination with in situ sample analysis (Ultraviolet-Visible-Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy and X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy) to elucidate the influence of solar wind-like ions on the characteristics of the sample. The protocol was tested on olivine powders and the results of laboratory simulations on this mineral are presented. The experimental capabilities developed for this work were also used to perform analysis on samples from asteroid 162173 Ryugu returned by Hayabusa2. This analysis included the study of individual Ryugu grains in pristine state (no prior exposure to Earth's atmosphere) and observations of the reflectance spectra of Ryugu powders under different incidence-emission-phase geometries. The protocol developed in this work was used to collect reflectance spectra of a set of terrestrial minerals without exposing them to air. By comparing the spectra to their air-exposed counterparts, the effects of atmospheric contamination on mineral spectra were evaluated. Throughout the execution of this work, different requirements for the analysis of telluric minerals and the laboratory simulations were identified. These considerations are included in the design of a new advanced surface science facility to study the properties of materials under extreme environments.

Book excerpt: On attending a conference on the Jovian satellites at UCLA, I heard Lou Lanze rotti vigorously present the exciting data on the sputtering of water ice by Me V protons taken with W. L. Brown at AT&T Bell Labs. In his inimitable way he made clear that this new electronic sputtering process was very poorly under stood and was very important for surface properties of sattelites. I was immedia tely hooked, and have been working ever since with Lanzerotti, Brown, my col league at Virginia, John Boring, and Bo Sundqvist at Uppsala on understanding the ejection of material from surfaces and applying laboratory results to intere sting planetary problems. In the course of writing this book I also had the benefit of spending a semester with the Planetary Geosciences group in Hawaii, thanks to Tom McCord, a period of time with Doug Nash at JPL, and a period ot time with the group at Catania. The book was started with the encouragement of Lou Lanzerotti. The writing has gone slowly as the field has been changing rapidly. Even now I feel it is incom plete, as the interesting Halley dust data have just recently been interpreted in detail, Voyager has recently visited Neptune, and the data on Pluto are rapidly improving. However, most of the principles for plasma ion alteration of surfaces and gases have been established allowing, I hope, a coherent and useful frame work for incorporating both new laboratory and planetary data.

The Moon lacks a dense atmosphere as well as a strong intrinsic magnetic field. As a result, its interactions with the ambient plasma are drastically different from solar-wind interactions with magnetized planets such as Earth. The Moon encounters a wide range of plasma regime from the relatively dense, cold, supersonic solar-wind plasma to the low-density, hot, subsonic plasma in the geomagnetic tail. In this book, the author presents a series of new observations from recent lunar missions (i.e., Kaguya, ARTEMIS, and Chandrayaan-1), demonstrating the importance of the electron gyro-scale dynamics, plasma of lunar origin, and hot plasma interactions with lunar magnetic anomalies. The similarity and difference between the Moon-plasma interactions in the geomagnetic tail and those in the solar wind are discussed throughout the thesis. The basic knowledge presented in this book can be applied to plasma interactions with airless bodies throughout the solar system and beyond.
