Book Contaminants and the Soil Environment in the Australasia Pacific Region

Download or read book Contaminants and the Soil Environment in the Australasia Pacific Region written by R. Naidu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australasia-Pacific Region supports approximately 50% of the world's population. The last half-century has witnessed a rapid increase in the regional population, agricultural productivity, industrial activities and trade within the region. Both the demand for increased food production and the desire to improve the economic conditions have affected regional environmental quality. This volume presents an overview of the fate of contaminants in the soil environment; current soil management factors used to control contaminant impacts, issues related to sludge and effluent disposals in the soil environment; legal, health and social impacts of contaminated land, remediation approaches and strategies to manage contaminated land, some of the problems associated with environmental degradation in the Australasia-Pacific Region and steps that we need to take to safeguard our environment.

Book Sustaining Groundwater Resources

Download or read book Sustaining Groundwater Resources written by J. Anthony A. Jones and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-21 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burgeoning population and climate change are among the most critical challenges facing the 21st century. Both have critical implications for groundwater resources, especially in many developing countries where resources are already under pressure. Due to low rainfall and high evaporation in parts of the Middle East and North Africa, groundwater is not being renewed, and groundwater laid down up to 10,000 years ago is literally being mined for irrigation, often very inefficiently. Over recent decades, groundwater levels have fallen dramatically in key grain-growing regions like the American Great Plains and the North China Plain. As the population grows and emerging economies like China and India demand more food, especially water intensive meat products, agricultural demand for water is set to increase. The rapid shift of population from the countryside to the cities is also adding to this pressure; most old wells in Beijing are now dry. Pollution from industry, agriculture and shanty towns is destroying many groundwater resources; some could take 50 years to clean up even with strict and immediate controls. This volume looks at the technical, socio-economic and political problems being faced, and at the developments in groundwater science and management that may help create a sustainable future for our planet.

Book Global Gold Production Touching Ground

Download or read book Global Gold Production Touching Ground written by Boris Verbrugge and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-04 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, gold mining has moved into increasingly remote corners of the globe. Aside from the expansion of industrial gold mining, many countries have simultaneously witnessed an expansion of labor-intensive and predominantly informal artisanal and small-scale gold mining. Both trends are usually studied in isolation, which contributes to a dominant image of a dual gold mining economy. Counteracting this dominant view, this volume adopts a global perspective, and demonstrates that both industrial gold mining and artisanal and small-scale gold mining are functionally integrated into a global gold production system. It couples an analysis of structural trends in global gold production (expansion, informalization, and technological innovation) to twelve country case studies that detail how global gold production becomes embedded in institutional and ecological structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 3rd Sriwijaya International Conference on Environmental Issues (3rd SRICOENV) 2022 was successfully held on OCTOBER 5th, 2022, in Palembang, South Sumatera-Indonesia (virtual conference). The 3rd SRICOENV 2022 created a forum for exchanging ideas and research results, opened new perspectives in related fields and broadened the horizons of all participants. The conference was attended by 350 people from all over the world. The conference was divided into three parts, including keynote lectures, oral presentations and online discussions. First, the keynote speakers had 30-45 minutes to present. Then, in the oral presentations, their authors presented the outstanding papers we selected individually. We are pleased to announce that we have selected many high-quality papers from the submissions and included them in the conference proceedings after a rigorous review. These papers cover all environmental topics to present the state of the art in environmental and climate change issues. All papers have undergone rigorous review to meet the requirements for publication. We would like to thank everyone who supported the 3rd SRICOENV 2022 and made it a great success. In particular, we would like to thank the European Alliance for Innovation (EAI) for the hard work of all their colleagues in publishing this volume. We sincerely hope that the 3rd SRICOENV 2022 was a forum for excellent discussions, enabling new ideas and promoting collaborative research.

Book Assessment of Non Point Source Pollution in the Vadose Zone

Download or read book Assessment of Non Point Source Pollution in the Vadose Zone written by Dennis L. Corwin and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1999-01-26 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 108. Non-point source (NPS) pollution in the vadose zone (simply defined as the layer of soil extending from the soil surface to the groundwater table) is a global environmental problem. Characteristically, NPS pollutants are widespread and occasionally ubiquitous in extent, thus making remediation efforts difficult and complex; have the potential for maintaining a relatively long active presence in the global ecosystem; and may result in long?]term, chronic health effects in humans and other life forms. Similar to other global environmental issues, the knowledge and information required to address the problem of NPS pollutants in the vadose zone cross several technological and subdisciplinary lines: spatial statistics, geographic information systems (GIS), hydrology, soil science, and remote sensing. Cooperation between disciplines and scientific societies is essential to address the problem. Evidence of such cooperation was the jointly sponsored American Geophysical Union Chapman/Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) Outreach Conference that occurred in October 1997, entitled “Applications of GIS, Remote Sensing, Geostatistics, and Solute Transport Modeling to the Assessment of Non-Point Source Pollution in the Vadose Zone.” The objective of the conference and this book, which was developed from the conference, was to explore current multidisciplinary research for assessing NPS pollution in soil and groundwater resources.
