Book Soil Mechanics of Earthworks Foundations and Highway Engineering

Download or read book Soil Mechanics of Earthworks Foundations and Highway Engineering written by Bozzano G Luisa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third volume of a handbook which covers the whole field of soil mechanics, discussing deterministic and stochastic theories and methods, and showing how they can be used in conjunction with one another. The first volume discusses soil physics, while the second deals with the determination of physical characteristics of the soil. Australian Mining wrote of the Handbook ``a valuable addition to the extensive literature on the topic and will be found to be more useful than most.''The main objective of the third volume is to present solutions to the problems of engineering practice. It deals with the most important theoretical and practical problems of soil mechanics, discussing the following in detail: stability of earthworks, load-bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundations, design of pile foundations, soil mechanics in road construction, improving the physical properties of soils, the characteristics of soil dynamics, foundations for machines and soil behaviour as affected by earthquakes. The book not only presents up-to-date deterministic methods, but also discusses solutions of probability theory in the fields of design and safety. The book is divided into six chapters covering the stability of slopes, landslides, load-bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundations and pile foundations, soil mechanics in road construction, and the improvement of the physical characteristics of soil with special emphasis on machine foundations and earthquakes, giving detailed treatment of each subject. For example, the first chapter deals not only with the stability of slopes, but also discusses the natural and artificial effects, slope protection, filter design, stresses in embankments, and the time factor. In this way, the book gives a clear and comprehensive picture of the special fields of soil mechanics and its subjects. It is therefore emminently suitable for postgraduate engineers, and engineers working in the fields of geotechnics, earthworks, foundations, road construction, engineering geology and statistics, and the design of structures.

Book Geotechnical Engineering and Soil Science

Download or read book Geotechnical Engineering and Soil Science written by Greg Powell and published by . This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geotechnical engineering uses the knowledge of soil science to understand the behaviour of Earth materials. As soil science is the study of the nature of soil, along with its chemical, physical, fertility and biological properties, it plays a crucial role in geotechnical engineering in understanding soil mechanics with respect to construction. Geotechnical engineers use this knowledge for civil engineering projects. This book is designed to provide in-depth information about this subject. The topics included in it on geotechnical engineering and soil science are of utmost significance and bound to provide incredible insights to readers. This textbook will serve as a valuable source of reference for those interested in this field.

Book Controlling Differential Settlement of Highway Soft Soil Subgrade

Download or read book Controlling Differential Settlement of Highway Soft Soil Subgrade written by Hanhua Zhu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-25 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on years of practical on-site experience, this book presents a new method for controlling "bridge-head bumping" in soft soil ground. Based on deformation compatibility and control theory of structure, it proposes strategies for improving the design method of soft soil ground and the effective "bridge-head bumping" control method. Soft soil ground is chiefly characterized by a large void ratio, high compressibility, high water content, low impermeability, low strength, strong structure and high sensitivity. As a result, it has pronounced rheological properties, and controlling "bridge-head bumping" in soft soil ground is essential to control the amount of soil rheology-induced unstable successive settlement. The book offers extensive information on this and related topics, making it a valuable guide for engineers in Civil Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering alike.

Book Agricultural Soil Mechanics

Download or read book Agricultural Soil Mechanics written by A. J. Koolen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared with forces occurring in soil mechanics problems in civil engineering, the forces that are applied to soil in farming operations generally have a short duration, less than a few seconds, a small loaded area, no more than a few square decimeters, and small intensities, 10 bar being a high value. On the other hand, soil properties vary widely between those of a weak mud and a stone-like dry soil. Tillage and related applications of force to soil are practiced worldwide in farming. Tillage operations are performed on one hectare of land for every three human beings. This means that for the food production for each individual daily, something like one cubic meter of soil is stirred, or about 20 times his body weight. Theoretical knowledge of this most common human activity, which largely determines the surface shape of the fertile part of the earth, is still very limited. In this book the authors have tried to give an outline of the present state of the art. One of the starting points was a course in soil dynamics taught by the authors at the Agricultural University at Wageningen, The Netherlands. We hope to reach interested readers who have no more theoretical knowledge than high school level, as well as readers who want to go beyond the level of a third year university student. For the chapter on wheels and tires we received substantial support from F. G. J. Tijink of the Tillage Laboratory at Wageningen.

This book will be useful to students and research workers in environmental sciences, hydrology, agriculture, soil science, and civil engineering.

Book Methodology of Highway Engineering Structural Design and Construction

Download or read book Methodology of Highway Engineering Structural Design and Construction written by Hanhua Zhu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book mainly studies the methodologies of structural design and construction for highway engineering, which are applicable to the overall control and the precise operation of engineering structures. It explores the method of comprehensive analysis, the simplification of complex problems, and the application of typical engineering tools. In turn, the book presents a number of innovative approaches, e.g. the coordinated control of structural deformation method, the theory of underground engineering balance and stability, and the soft soil foundation treatment of “bumping at the bridgehead.” These methodologies are then illustrated in typical cases and representative problems, explained from a practical standpoint. Examples in special settings are also discussed, e.g. highway construction in Tibet, and rebuilding after the Wenchuan earthquake. The book offers a valuable reference guide for all those whose work involves highway engineering design, construction, management, and scientific research.
