Book Microbiological Methods for Assessing Soil Quality

Download or read book Microbiological Methods for Assessing Soil Quality written by Jaap Bloem and published by CABI. This book was released on 2005-12-20 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a selection of microbiological methods which are applicable or already applied in regional or national soil quality monitoring programmes. An overview is given of approaches to monitoring, evaluating and managing soil quality (Part I), followed by a selection of methods which are described in sufficient detail to use the book as a practical handbook in the laboratory (Part II). Finally a census is given of the main methods used in over 30 European laboratories. The book is aimed at different levels: soil scientists, technicians, policy makers, land managers and students.

Book Bio Geotechnologies for Mine Site Rehabilitation

Download or read book Bio Geotechnologies for Mine Site Rehabilitation written by M.N.V. Prasad and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bio-Geotechnologies for Mine Site Rehabilitation deals with the biological, physical, chemical, and engineering approaches necessary for the reclamation of mine waste. As mining has negative effects on natural resources and deteriorates the quality of the surrounding environment, this book provides coverage across different types of mining industries, which are currently creating industrial deserts overloaded with technogenic waste. The book offers cost-effective strategies and approaches for contaminated sites, along with remediation and rehabilitation methods for contaminated soils and waste dumps. It is an essential resource for students and academics, but is also ideal for applied professionals in environmental geology, mineral geologists, biotechnologists and policymakers. Deals with global and holistic approaches of abandoned mine land rehabilitation Includes mine waste rehabilitation case studies from around the world Covers integrated technologies, such as bioremediation of metalliferous soil Provide strategies for sustainable ecosystems on mine spoil dumps Offers novel methods for the remediation of acid mine drainage

Book A Comparison of Methods for Estimating Soil Microbial Biomass

Download or read book A Comparison of Methods for Estimating Soil Microbial Biomass written by Breno Machado Grisi and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "standing crop" or biomass of microorganisms, that stores important nutrients in soil (nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur) should be a useful guide to evaluate changes in soil microbial populations, caused by many factors concerning the use and management of soils. In the present study four methods devised to estimate soil microbial biomass were compared: A) biomass determined from microorganisms killed by fumigation with alcohol-free chloroform; b) biomass determined from the substrate-induced maximum initial respiration rate after addition of glucose to soil; c) ATP content of soil; d) microbial biovolumes of hyphae, and of spherical and nearly spherical microorganisms, estimated by fluorescence microscopy. The biovolumes were converted to biomass. These methods were used simultaneously with the same samples from nine different soils (woodlands soils, agricultural and grassland ones) for determining their microbial biomasses. Strong and significant correlations were obtained between the biomass determined by the fumigation method (termed here fumigation biomass or FB) and ATP content of soil (r+ 0,94) and respiration rate in response to glucose (termed were RRG) (r= 0,85). ATP content correlated strongly and significantly with RRG (r= 0,95). The correlation of FB with biomass calculated from total biovolume of fungi and of spherical and nearly spherical microorganismd (termed here B-TBv) was poor and non-significant (r= 0,39). B-TBv did not correlate significantly with ATP content of soil (r= 0,52). B-TBv ...

Download or read book Soil Pollution written by Ibrahim Mirsal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-20 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite having been published about two years ago for the first time, the continuous demand for this book encouraged me to prepare this revised and enlarged edition. Many parts of the text have been rewritten, type errors traced and corrected, and the bibliography largely modified to include many of the references published about the subject of soil pollution in the previous ten years. I should like to express my thanks to the staff of Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg, for their cooperative efforts in preparing this edition. I also would like to thank Mr. Michael Sidwell (B.A.) for the extreme but characteristic care with which he read and revised the proofs. I hope that, in this new edition, the book may continue to serve the needs of students and professionals alike interested in the subject of soil pollution. Ibrahim A. Mirsal Preface to the First Edition Whoever has enjoyed following the legendary duel between the Egyptian Pharaoh and his magicians (Alchemists) on one side, and Moses and his brother Aaron on the other, as is vividly narrated in the Bible, must have realised that people (at least those living at, or near the eternal battlefields of the Middle East) have always had knowledge about the terrible consequences of soil pollution by chemicals. This knowledge must have existed long before Moses and his Pharaoh. Nobody knows when people became aware of this, yet it must have been born in very early times, reaching back to the dawn of human conscious.
