Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Moisture Survey of Some Representative Maine Soil Types Information regarding the ability of soils to hold moisture that is available for plant growth is of importance to the farmer, irrigation and drainage engineer, and agricultural researcher. Recent increases in irriga tion practices in the humid region have developed a greater interest in the determination of the available water. By the use of all kinds Of farm machinery the farm ers with large families have need Of little hired help, except during the potato - harvesting season, when large numbers Of laborers come in from the Provinces. The average wage paid at these times ranges from $2 to a day with board. By the month laborers command from $20 to $30 with board. According to the census Of 1900 the average size of farms was acres, and per cent Of these were operated by the owners, the remainder being rented. On the rented farms the share and cash tenants are about evenly divided. Where land is rented on shares the owner and tenant each receive one - half the crop. Cash rents run from $10 to $25 an acre, depending on the n'earness to market and the condition Of the farm. The value Of farm lands has tripled in the last twelve or fifteen years, and instances are not uncommon where farms have sold for ten times what they brought twelve years ago. The greater part of the cleared ridge land, with improvements, sells for about $100 an acre. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Soil Moisture Characteristics of Some Lower Coastal Plain Soils Classic Reprint

Download or read book Soil Moisture Characteristics of Some Lower Coastal Plain Soils Classic Reprint written by Franklin Leslie Long and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Moisture Characteristics of Some Lower Coastal Plain Soils A knowledge of the amount of water retained by a soil in a form that is available for growing plants is valuable to farmers, designers of drainage or irrigation systems, and re search workers interested in soil-plant relationships. To plan properly for the management and efficient use of water, it is necessary to know how much available water a given soil holds. Plants will suffer from drought quicker on soils with limited available water capacity than on soils of higher capacity. Water management systems, including the removal of excess water or replenishing deficient moisture supplies, should be based on a knowledge of the soil mois ture characteristics and other physical properties of the soil. Therefore, the consideration of the moisture characteristics of a g1ven soil to be drained or irrigated is essential to the planning of a successful operation. If we look at the tensions corresponding to 50 percent available moisture for the three soils, we find that for the clay it is h.5 atmospheres; for the 10mm 2 atmospheres, and for the sand atmos pherae. This information is arranged in Table I for various available moisture percentages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
