Download or read book Soil Compaction and Proof rolling of Subgrades written by National Research Council (U.S.). Highway Research Board and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paper 1: The object of this paper is to give a brief outline of the test installation and techniques employed at the road research laboratory in carrying out the full-scale compaction tests and to give a summary of the main results obtained in the investigations. Paper 2 shows the cases where proof-rolling will be effective and those cases where it will not. Paper 3 deals with the use of flowing water as a compacting and stabilizing agent. Paper 4 presents a new approach to liquid limit determinations by a one-point procedure. Necessary equations, charts and tables, developed on the AASHO road test and easily usable by technicians, are presented.

Download or read book Proof Rolling of Foundation Soil and Prepared Subgrade During Construction written by Phillip Dunston and published by . This book was released on 2018-02 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 16. AbstractProof rolling provides a method to examine the entire subgrade surface as a compliment to standard random acceptance testing. Proof rolling requires established criteria that account for the interplay of equipment parameters and soil characteristics, technique, and other specifics of the project to allow for proper interpretation. The researchers concluded that proof rolling is not appropriate for determining soil elastic properties, while it can reveal in situ strength properties. No information from state highway agencies (SHA) publications or interviews reports using proof rolling other than for the evaluation of the subgrade. Only eight SHA¿s have notable specifications or other supporting documents containing significant guidance or criteria. The requirements provided for use of either of two equipment types¿tandem-axle rear dump trucks and chariot-style rollers¿and a range of evaluation criteria based on soil type and whether the project is new construction or re-construction. Recommendations provided fall within parameters practiced by states that have the most well-developed specifications and practices for proof rolling. The recommendations include: evaluation is of the subgrade only and the equipment shall be either a tandem-axle rear dump truck or a tri-axle rear dump truck (with raised third axle) loaded to a minimum gross weight of 20 tons. The chariot-style roller loaded to a minimum gross weight of 40 tons could be alternatively specified. The test shall be a single pass in each traffic lane with the passing criteria of a 1¿ deflection for new construction and 1⁄2¿ deflection for re-constructed or stabilized subgrade, as well as the absence of pumping and cracking.

Download or read book Intelligent Soil Compaction Systems written by Michael A. Mooney and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2010 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 676: Intelligent Soil Compaction Systems explores intelligent compaction, a new method of achieving and documenting compaction requirements. Intelligent compaction uses continuous compaction-roller vibration monitoring to assess mechanistic soil properties, continuous modification/adaptation of roller vibration amplitude and frequency to ensure optimum compaction, and full-time monitoring by an integrated global positioning system to provide a complete GPS-based record of the compacted area--

Download or read book GROUND IMPROVEMENT TECHNIQUES written by JOYANTA MAITY and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the unavailability of good construction sites owing to the growth of cities and industries, the site engineers are nowadays compelled to adopt methods of forcing the weak soil to behave according to the project requirement. Written in the same context, the book focuses on the fundamental principles and practical methods of ground improvement. The design and constructional procedure of different ground improvement methods are comprehensively covered in the text. The subject-matter, divided into fourteen chapters, is organised into a simplified and logical manner to describe first the working methods and then the possible future developments. The book enables its readers to become aware of the overall methodology to be adopted in a particular case and seek possible solution to the chosen field. It is primarily intended to cater the needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students of civil engineering and geotechnical engineering. KEY FEATURES • Numerous figures, tables and mathematical equations are provided to support the topics discussed. • Several worked-out examples are provided in most of the chapters. • Objective questions, descriptive questions and references are given at the end of each chapter. • Numerical questions are given for practice in the relevant chapters. • An appendix introduces miscellaneous topics related to soil.
