Book excerpt: It is, indeed, widely acceptable today that nowhere is it more important to focus on the improvement of software quality than in the case of systems with requirements in the areas of safety and reliability - especially for distributed, real-time and embedded systems. Thus, much research work is under progress in these fields, since software process improvement impinges directly on achieved levels of quality, and many application experiments aim to show quantitative results demonstrating the efficacy of particular approaches. Requirements for safety and reliability - like other so-called non-functional requirements for computer-based systems - are often stated in imprecise and ambiguous terms, or not at all. Specifications focus on functional and technical aspects, with issues like safety covered only implicitly, or not addressed directly because they are felt to be obvious; unfortunately what is obvious to an end user or system user is progressively less so to others, to the extend that a software developer may not even be aware that safety is an issue. Therefore, there is a growing evidence for encouraging greater understanding of safety and reliability requirements issues, right across the spectrum from end user to software developer; not just in traditional safety-critical areas (e.g. nuclear, aerospace) but also acknowledging the need for such things as heart pacemakers and other medical and robotic systems to be highly dependable.

The need for this assessment was predicated upon four observations: 1. Critical systems are increasingly being controlled by computer systems; 2. Existing techniques for developing, assuring and certifying computer-based critical systems are inadequate; 3. Formal methods have the potential for playing the same role in the devel opment of computer-based systems as applied mathematics does for other engineering disciplines; and 4. Formal methods have had limited impact on the development of comput- based systems and supporting technologies. · The goal of the workshop was to complete the following tasks: 1. Assess the problems retarding the development of trustworthy critical systems; 2. Determine the (potential) impact of applying formal methods techniques to the development of trustworthy critical systems; 3. As a consequence, ECOOP has expanded far beyond its roots in programming to encompass all of these areas of research—whichis why ECOOP has remained such an interesting conference. But ECOOP is more than an interesting conference. It is the nucleus of a technical and academic community, a community whose goals are the creation and dissemination of new knowledge. Chance meetings at ECOOP have helped to spawn collaborations that span the boundaries of our many subdisciplines, bring together researchers and practitioners, cross cultures, and reach from one side of the world to the other. The ubiquity of fast electronic communication has made maintaining these collaborations easier than we would have believed possible only a dozen years ago. But the role of conferences like ECOOP in establishing collaborations has not diminished.
