Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observers in the present usually have an advantage when it comes to interpreting events of the past. In the case of software reuse, how ever, it is unclear why an idea that has gained such universal accep tance was the source of swirling controversy when it began to be taken seriously by the software engineering community in the mid-1980's. From a purely conceptual point of view, the reuse of software de signs and components promises nearly risk-free benefits to the devel oper. Virtually every model of software cost and development effort predicts first-order dependencies on either products size or the num ber of steps carried out in development. Reduce the amount of new product to be developed and the cost of producing the product de creases. Remove development steps, and total effort is reduced. By reusing previously developed engineering products the amount of new product and the number of development steps can be reduced. In this way, reuse clearly has a major influence on reducing total development cost and effort. This, of course, raises the issue of from whence the reused products arise. There has to be a prior investment in creating "libraries of reuse products before reuse can be successfuL . . " How can organizations with a "bottom line" orientation be enticed into contributing to a reuse venture? Fortunately, the economics of reuse l resembles many other financial investment situations .

Book Software Reuse in Real Time Environments

Download or read book Software Reuse in Real Time Environments written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the roles of several factors affecting the potential reuse of Ada software for realtime applications. More specifically, it examines the roles of the Ada language and common package interfaces. The Ada language is evaluated with regard to how well it meets several requirements for supporting reuse, and how it could be revised to support reuse better. The concept of common bridge package interfaces is introduced as a technique for enabling more software to be reused. Three specific common package interfaces are examined in detail. These are: the MRTSI; the POSIX Ada binding (1003.5); the POSIX realtime extension (1003.4). These interfaces are considered with respect to their individual potential for promoting software reuse, their interactions, and their potential for supporting and complementing Ada for realtime applications.

Book VISTA a Visual Interface for Software Reuse in TROMLAB Environment

Download or read book VISTA a Visual Interface for Software Reuse in TROMLAB Environment written by Rajee Nagarajan and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Software reuse has the potential to increase productivity and reduce development costs. Several research and experience reports show that practicing and achieving high levels of software reuse in the presence of repository and object-oriented computer-aided software engineering (CASE) development methods pose technical and managerial challenges. This thesis presents reuse research that seeks to integrate and enhance software development activity in TROMLAB framework, an environment being constructed at Concordia, University for a rigorous development of real-time reactive systems. We propose a browser-based reuse framework for automatic search and retrieval of TROMLAB components. VISTA is a visual medium embedding the browser for practicing software reuse in TROMLAB applications. The browser provides facilities to navigate the repositories of reusable components, inspect components and their dependencies, and enable the retrieval and modifications of components for reuse. The browser also works in conjunction with the graphical user interface of TROMLAB, thus providing an environment for active reuse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Software Reuse is a state of the art book concerning all aspects of software reuse. It does away with the hype and shows the reality. Different techniques are presented which enable software reuse and the author demonstrates why object-oriented methods are better for reuse than other approaches. The book details the different factors to take into account when managing reusable components: characterisation, identification, building, verification, storage, search, adaptation, maintenance and evolution. Comparisons and description of various types of companies that could benefit from applying reuse techniques are included outlining, amongst other things, increased profitability and likely problems that might arise from the purchase and selling of reuse tools and components. Based on a real experience of software reuse in a company with a bibliography of more than 200 references provided, this book is a 'must have' for all those working in the software reuse field.

Book Experiences in Software Evolution and Reuse

Download or read book Experiences in Software Evolution and Reuse written by Svein Hallsteinsen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: lfimplementing systematic reuse is risky, not doing it is even more risky. Trying systematic reuse unsuccessfully can cost precious time and resources and may make management sceptical of trying it again. But if your competitors do it successfully and you do not, you may lose market share and possibly an entire market. W. B. Frakes and S. Isoda, 1994 Software companies today are faced with new and more challenging market pressures. In response to this challenge, they have to reduce the time-to-market with new or enhanced products, increase the diversity of products available to the customers, and enhance the standardisation and interoperability of the products. At the same time, many companies carry the burden of large legacy systems, that have become too expensive to maintain and cannot sustain the demands of the marketing department for alterations, leading to business opportunities being lost [BEN95]. However the systems are very valuable and cannot be simply replaced because of the costs that such an operation entails. Simply replacing them may be too expensive because of the huge volumes of on-line data that must be converted, among other reasons.

Book Integrated Software Reuse

Download or read book Integrated Software Reuse written by Paul Walton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1993. Software reuse has been shown to achieve improvements in productivity, quality and timeliness of software. The collection of papers in this book were given at a seminar organized by UNICOM and the British Computer Society Software Reuse Specialist Group. They address the reasons why software reuse can maximize an organization's return from past expenditure and ensure a good future expenditure. Increasing the automation of software development requires access to explicit knowledge about processes and products involved. The chapters examine the relationship between reuse and other aspects of software engineering, including management techniques and structures, CASE, methodologies and object orientation. In addition, the papers aim to provide a structures insight into new techniques which will become available through the 1990s. This text is suitable for software managers and directors, software engineers, software professionals, academics, and other involved in software engineering research.

Book High Confidence Software Reuse in Large Systems

Download or read book High Confidence Software Reuse in Large Systems written by Hong Mei and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-07-29 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Software reuse depicts a great vision for the software industry. It has been widely viewed as a promising way to improve both the productivity and quality of software development. However, despite of the successes we have achieved, there are still many issues that have limited the promotion of software reuse in the real world. Therefore, software reuse has remained an important hotspot of research. ICSR is the premier international conference in the field of software reuse. It has been an important venue for presenting advances and improvements within the software reuse domain, and a powerful driving force in promoting the interaction between researchers and practitioners. The theme of ICSR 10 was "High Confidence Software Reuse in Large Systems. " A high confidence system is one that behaves in a well-understood and predictable fashion. Today’s trends towards widespread use of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technology, increased integration, continuous evolution, and larger scale are yielding more complex software systems. So, the problem of how to build high confidence complex systems and how to reuse software with a high level of confidence has become a new attractive topic for research. Furthermore, high-level software asset reuse has been a goal for the last 20–30 years, and it can still be considered an unsolved question. Components-based development, MDA-MDE-MDD, extreme programming, and other techniques or methods are promising approaches to software reuse that still need more research. These proceedings report on the current state of the art in software reuse.

Book Reusability for Intelligent Realtime Interactive Systems

Download or read book Reusability for Intelligent Realtime Interactive Systems written by Dennis Wiebusch and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With recent releases of affordable hardware devices the fields of Virtual, Mixed, and Augmented Reality gained considerable attention, wherefore the creation of corresponding software becomes increasingly important. In the absence of a common model for flexibly combining and reusing appropriate software modules, such Realtime Interactive Systems are commonly implemented from scratch. Borrowing from the fields of Software Engineering and Knowledge Representation, this work develops a model for the creation of reusable components from existing software modules. With a Knowledge Representation Layer at its core the model additionally enables the utilization of methods from the field of Artificial Intelligence, thereby supporting the creation of Intelligent Realtime Interactive Systems.

Book Re Engineering Software

Download or read book Re Engineering Software written by Roy Rada and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-01-26 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating software of any kind is an enormously expensive proposition, whether for internal use or commercial application. The range of activities involved in engineering and creating software are mind-boggling in complexity. Yet, every time new software is developed, most programmers start from scratch without considering what might be re-used or salvaged from existing programs. Re-Engineering Software addresses the principles, approaches, support systems, underlying methodologies, and real case examples for re-using (and thus building on) previously existing software.
