Book excerpt: This report describes the results of an initial year-long study of current Air Force procedures for formulating and communicating software requirements and their effects on software acquisition for embedded computers. An 'embedded' computer is defined as an integral component of a larger defense system whose major functions go beyond data processing. Occasionally such computers are physically embedded in the systems they support (e.g., on-board computers in aircraft or missile weapon systems), but physical proximity is not necessary to the definition. Many command and control systems employ computers considered to be embedded in the functional sense, although they are physically separated from other system components. The results presented here are based on an examination of eight major acquisition programs, drawn primarily from the Air Force's Aeronautical Systems Division (ASD) and Electronics Systems Division (ESD), each containing a substantial embedded computer component. For each program, we interviewed personnel from the System Program Office (SPO) and from the prime contractor wherever possible, these were people who were or had been directly associated with software acquisition.

Book excerpt: Previous research has validated the concept of Embedded Training (ET) by installing a powerful, machine transportable Computer Assisted Instructional (CAI) authoring language and software system known as PLANIT (Programming LANguage for Interactive Teaching) on the Field Artillery's Tactical Fire Direction Computer System (TACFIRE). Subsequent research demonstrated that the same hardware and software could be used for the administration of an embedded Skill Qualification Test (SQT). The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of transferring ET and embedded SQT technology to existing Army Air Defense Weapons Systems. Six Air Defense Weapons systems were examined: TSQ-73, HAWK, FAAR, PATRIOT, ROLAND, and DIVAD. In general, the results indicated that it would be impractical to attempt to run PLANIT on any of the air defense weapons computers, but that PLANIT could be run on an adjunct computer and be made to satisfy the training/testing needs by using a fabricated terminal very similar to the authentic one. The development of such a prototype for an off-line embedded SQT capability could be produced for one of the selected Air Defense systems in a short time and for a relatively low cost. If successful, the resulting technology would have application not only to existing systems, but to new Air Defense systems to come into the inventory in the 1980's. (Author).
