This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most significant challenges in large-scale climate modeling, as well as in high-performance computing in other scientific fields, is that of effectively integrating many software models from multiple contributors. A software framework facilitates the integration task. both in the development and runtime stages of the simulation. Effective software frameworks reduce the programming burden for the investigators, freeing them to focus more on the science and less on the parallel communication implementation, while maintaining high performance across numerous supercomputer and workstation architectures. This document proposes a strawman framework design for the climate community based on the integration of Cactus, from the relativistic physics community, and UCLA/UCB Distributed Data Broker (DDB) from the climate community. This design is the result of an extensive survey of climate models and frameworks in the climate community as well as frameworks from many other scientific communities. The design addresses fundamental development and runtime needs using Cactus, a framework with interfaces for FORTRAN and C-based languages, and high-performance model communication needs using DDB. This document also specifically explores object-oriented design issues in the context of climate modeling as well as climate modeling issues in terms of object-oriented design.Talbot, Bryan and Zhou, Shu-Jia and Higgins, GlennGoddard Space Flight CenterSOFTWARE ENGINEERING; CLIMATE MODELS; DISTRIBUTED PROCESSING; COMPUTERIZED SIMULATION; ARCHITECTURE (COMPUTERS); DATA INTEGRATION; MATHEMATICAL MODELS; FORTRAN; OBJECT-ORIENTED PROGRAMMING; COMPUTER SYSTEMS DESIGN; C (PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE); RUN TIME (COMPUTERS)

Book Global Change and the Challenges of Sustainably Feeding a Growing Planet

Download or read book Global Change and the Challenges of Sustainably Feeding a Growing Planet written by Thomas W. Hertel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-31 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the fundamental determinants of long term changes in agricultural land use and the associated implications for environmental and food security. The book is designed around the idea that each chapter focuses on one driver, or underlying determinant, of land use change at global scale. It starts with key factors which have been influential in the past, such as growth population, incomes and agricultural productivity, thereafter turning to new drivers such as biofuels, climate change and demand for environmental services. Specialized topics include food security outcomes, projections of future agricultural prices, greenhouse gas emissions, the role of globalization and market integration. The book draws heavily on the emerging body of literature on these topics, summarizes key findings and organizes these within a unifying economic framework.

Book How to Think Like Shakespeare

Download or read book How to Think Like Shakespeare written by Scott Newstok and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book offers a short, spirited defense of rhetoric and the liberal arts as catalysts for precision, invention, and empathy in today's world. The author, a professor of Shakespeare studies at a liberal arts college and a parent of school-age children, argues that high-stakes testing and a culture of assessment have altered how and what students are taught, as courses across the arts, humanities, and sciences increasingly are set aside to make room for joyless, mechanical reading and math instruction. Students have been robbed of a complete education, their imaginations stunted by this myopic focus on bare literacy and numeracy. Education is about thinking, Newstok argues, rather than the mastery of a set of rigidly defined skills, and the seemingly rigid pedagogy of the English Renaissance produced some of the most compelling and influential examples of liberated thinking. Each of the fourteen chapters explores an essential element of Shakespeare's world and work, aligns it with the ideas of other thinkers and writers in modern times, and suggests opportunities for further reading. Chapters on craft, technology, attention, freedom, and related topics combine past and present ideas about education to build a case for the value of the past, the pleasure of thinking, and the limitations of modern educational practices and prejudices"--

Book Moving Towards Wholeness

Download or read book Moving Towards Wholeness written by Joy and published by . This book was released on 2008-05-01 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ENDORSEMENTS FOR A PORTAL OPENS: ALL ABOUT MARY and/or Moving Toward Wholeness "In her riveting account of journeying toward wholeness, Joy documents her travels in the realm of mind/body/spirit, traveling across the world and among worlds. She weaves these worlds into one, where dreams inform waking hours, departed souls partner with the living, and religious figures guide those who are open to them. Hers is a story told on multiple levels as she is at once a student, a seeker, a mother mourning the loss of her son, and an inspiration for others." -- Nancy Margulies, Mindscapes "Joy's very painful experience in losing her son Dion, caused a great affinity with the Virgin Mother who lost a son at a comparably young age. Her deep introspection caused this closeness with all mothers who have lost sons and Mother Mary stands as the ultimate example of this experience. This mother relating to mother over the loss of a beloved son crosses all segments of religious affiliation. For Joy, this portal opened a pathway that enabled her to have a deeply moving religious experience. Her story of this experience gives the reader a look into the sanctity of Joy's journey." --Dr John Cavan, President, Southside Virginia Community College "In Joy's writing we have the opportunity to learn to heal; to find process for balance; to align mind and body with intentionality in the service of deep peace. Joy shows us how to take gifts and make them our own with abiding grace. She writes in a time when the forgotten feminine voice is called upon to come forward with strength and power. In doing so, she takes the call upon herself and becomes this needed voice, modeling the best of who she is." __ Dr LynneZickerman, Berkeley, California

Book excerpt: ‘KUMBA AFRICA’, is a compilation of African Short Stories written as fiction by Sampson Ejike Odum, nostalgically taking our memory back several thousands of years ago in Africa, reminding us about our past heritage. It digs deep into the traditional life style of the Africans of old, their beliefs, their leadership, their courage, their culture, their wars, their defeat and their victories long before the emergence of the white man on the soil of Africa. As a talented writer of rich resource and superior creativity, armed with in-depth knowledge of different cultures and traditions in Africa, the Author throws light on the rich cultural heritage of the people of Africa when civilization was yet unknown to the people. The book reminds the readers that the Africans of old kept their pride and still enjoyed their own lives. They celebrated victories when wars were won, enjoyed their New yam festivals and villages engaged themselves in seasonal wrestling contest etc; Early morning during harmattan season, they gathered firewood and made fire inside their small huts to hit up their bodies from the chilling cold of the harmattan. That was the Africa of old we will always remember. In Africa today, the story have changed. The people now enjoy civilized cultures made possible by the influence of the white man through his scientific and technological process. Yet there are some uncivilized places in Africa whose people haven’t tested or felt the impact of civilization. These people still maintain their ancient traditions and culture. In everything, we believe that days when people paraded barefooted in Africa to the swarmp to tap palm wine and fetch firewood from there farms are almost fading away. The huts are now gradually been replaced with houses built of blocks and beautiful roofs. Thanks to modern civilization. Donkeys and camels are no longer used for carrying heavy loads for merchants. They are now been replaced by heavy trucks and lorries. African traditional methods of healing are now been substituted by hospitals. In all these, I will always love and remember Africa, the home of my birth and must respect her cultures and traditions as an AFRICAN AUTHOR.

Book Moon Face and Other Stories

Download or read book Moon Face and Other Stories written by Jack London and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We’ve all taken a dislike to someone for no real reason. But few of us nurture this hatred like the narrator of "Moon-Face". The target of his irrational malice is a man named John Claverhouse. With cold precision, the narrator sets to planning the man’s downfall. Why he has this urge, he can’t explain. But he knows he’ll feel immense satisfaction when John Claverhouse is made to suffer. In this macabre little tale, Jack London pinpoints a very common but unpleasant human trait. And then takes it to a horrifying extreme. This short story collection also includes "All Gold Canyon", which was adapted as part of the Netflix anthology movie "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs". Jack London (1876–1916) was one of the first American writers to achieve worldwide celebrity. He did so with rugged adventure stories set in forbidding landscapes. And heroes who survive by embracing their most primal instincts. His breakthrough best seller was "The Call of the Wild". Inspired by his time in the Klondike Gold Rush, this hard-hitting novel is told from the perspective of a sled dog named Buck. It’s inspired many adaptations, including a big-budget movie starring Harrison Ford. Among London’s other notable works are "White Fang", also featuring a canine protagonist, as well as "The Sea-Wolf", "Martin Eden" and "The Iron Heel".
