Download or read book Ecosystems of the Deep Oceans written by P.A. Tyler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-03-27 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the deep sea ecosystem from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapters examine the deep-sea floor, the deep pelagic environment and the more specialised chemosynthetic environments of hydrothermal vents and cold seeps. These environments are examined from the perspective of the relationship of deep-sea animals to their physico-chemical environment.Later chapters examine the biogeography of the main deep oceans (Atlantic, Pacific and Indian) with particular attention to the downward flux of surface-derived organic matter and how this drives the processes within the deep-sea ecosystem. The peripheral deep seas including the polar seas and the marginal deep seas (inter alia the Mediterranean, Red, Caribbean and Okhotsk seas) are explored in the same context. The final chapters examine the processes occurring in the deep sea and include an analysis of why the deep sea has high species diversity, how the fauna respond to organic input and how species have adapted reproductive activity in the deep sea. The volume concludes with an analysis of the anthropogenic impact on the deep sea.

Download or read book Long Term Changes in Coastal Benthic Communities written by C.H.R. Heip and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers and abstracts of the posters given at the symposium on Long-term Changes in Coastal Benthic Communities organized by the Commission of the European Communities in Brussels, Belgium from 9 till 12 December 1985. The organization of this symposium came to conclude five years of activities in the COST 647 project on Coastal Benthic Ecology, the rationale of which is explained in the foreword by B. F. Keegan. The importance of this volume is that for the first time special attention is given to long-term data series of relevant biological variables collected in different marine benthic habitats. Many of the data presented here are the result of years of careful data collection by some of the leading scientists in the field of benthic ecology. Some of the series, such as the Macoma balthica data from the Wadden Sea or the macrofauna data from Loch Linnhe, to name just those two, are already classics in the marine biological literature. Other data were collected in the framework of a monitoring programme and are now analyzed for the first time in the different perspective of the COST 647 project. Several papers are from related fields where they represent well known case studies; they were chosen in order to see how problems have been tackled elsewhere.

Download or read book Biology of Benthic Organisms written by B. F. Keegan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology of Benthic Organisms contains papers presented at the 11th European Symposium on Marine Biology, held at Galway, Ireland in October 1976. The collection contains 63 papers discussing the biological aspects of benthic organisms. The authors, mostly marine biologists, provide articles discussing their studies of marine life from different bodies of water from around the world. Topics on community structures of soft-bottom macrofauna in different parts of the Baltic; studies on anaerobic nitrogen fixation in the sediments of two Scottish sea-lochs; distribution of benthic phyto- and zoocoenoses along a light gradient in a superficial marine cave; and structural features of a North Adriatic benthic community are discussed in detail. Marine biologists, botanists, zoologists, and biologists will find the book invaluable.
Download or read book Progress in Environmental Research written by Irma C. Willis and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The environment consists of the surroundings in which an organism operates, including air, water, land, natural resources, flora, fauna, humans and their interrelation. It is this environment which is both so valuable, on the one hand, and so endangered on the other. And it is people which are by and large ruining the environment both for themselves and for all other organisms. This book presents important new research on a wide variety of topics in this field.
Download or read book Cyclic Phenomena in Marine Plants and Animals written by E. Naylor and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyclic Phenomena in Marine Plants and Animals covers the proceedings of the 13th European Marine Biology Symposium. The title presents papers that tackle the cyclical biological processes in population ecology, developmental biology, metabolism, and the behavior of marine organisms. The text first covers topics about the population cycles of flora and fauna. Next, the selection details the rhythmic aspects of reproduction and growth, and then proceeds to discussing the cyclical aspects of production and metabolism. The text also deals with the rhythmic behavior and its control by environmental and physiological factors. The book will be of great use to students, researchers, and practitioners of marine biology and ecology.
Download or read book Ecology of Marine Sediments written by John S. Gray and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-22 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine sediments provide the largest habitat on planet earth, yet knowledge of the structure and function of their flora and fauna continues to be poorly described in current textbooks. This concise, readable introduction to benthic ecology builds upon the strengths of the previous edition but has been thoroughly revised throughout to incorporate the new technologies and methods that have allowed a rapid and ongoing development of the field. It explores the relationship between community structure and function, and the selection of global examples ensures an international appeal and relevance. The economic value of marine sediments increases daily, reflected in the text with a new emphasis on pollution, climate change, conservation, and management.
