Book Effect of Resin and Fatty Acids on Sodium Salt Scaling

Download or read book Effect of Resin and Fatty Acids on Sodium Salt Scaling written by Michael Nwaeri and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evaporation of black liquor is an important, energy intensive unit operation in the kraft chemical recovery process. Between 50 and 85% dry solids, black liquor evaporators are susceptible to heavy sodium salt scaling leading to reduced heat transfer efficiency. Recent mill experiences indicate that the addition of small amounts of resin and fatty acids (RFA) containing streams (tall oil soap, tall oil brine) to the concentrators can reduce sodium salt scaling. The underlying mechanism for this is unknown, which limits broader application and control. In this work we validate a gas chromatography mass spectrometry method for RFA determination and use model solutions of sodium salts in a bench-top scaling setup to investigate the impact of RFA on sodium salt scaling. The results show that low concentrations of abietic acid and oleic acid can inhibit sodium salt scaling during nucleation and in the presence of a stable crystal population.

Book Multivariate Analysis of Variables Affecting Thermal Performance of Black Liquor Evaporators

Download or read book Multivariate Analysis of Variables Affecting Thermal Performance of Black Liquor Evaporators written by Hamideh Hajiha and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple Effect Evaporators (MEE) are used in kraft pulp mills to concentrate black liquor. In order to verify if the MEE is operating at an optimum condition, thermal performance of evaporators is calculated. Due to the interconnection of many variables involved, this can be a challenging task. Thus, this work involved the study of operating data from two Canadian pulp mills using Multivariate Data Analysis (MVDA) techniques: Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Partial Least Squares Analysis (PLS). Moreover, the evaporation system was modelled using a dynamic simulation software called CADSIM. MVDA determined that the thermal performance of the evaporators was positively correlated with the weak black liquor flow rate and negatively correlated with the steam pressure (to the first effect). The CADSIM model confirmed these findings. Therefore, these two techniques show to be useful tools in identifying operating variables that may be adjusted to improve thermal performance of evaporators.
