Book Selected Poems Poemas Selectos

Download or read book Selected Poems Poemas Selectos written by Jimmy Santiago Baca and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Baca writes with unconcealed passion . . . and manifests both an intense lyricism and that transformative vision which perceives the mythical and archetypal significance of life events.”—Denise Levertov Champion of the International Poetry Slam, winner of the Before Columbus American Book Award, the International Hispanic Heritage Award, the Pushcart Prize, and the prestigious International Award, Jimmy Santiago Baca has been writing as a mestizo (part Native American, part Mexican) and an outsider ever since he learned to read and write—in English—during a six-year Federal prison sentence when he was in his twenties. Drawing on his rich ethnic heritage and his life growing up in poverty in the Southwestern United States, Baca has a created a body of work which speaks to the disenfranchised by drawing on his experiences as a prisoner, a father, a poet, and by reflecting on the lush, and sometimes stark, landscape of the Rio Grande valley. In response to increased demand for Latino poetry in Spanish, and to thousands of Baca fans who are bilingual, this unique collection contains Spanish translations of Baca’s poetry selected from the volumes Martín and Mediations on the South Valley (1987), Black Mesa Poems (1989), Immigrants in Our Own Land (1990), Healing Earthquakes (2001), C-Train and Thirteen Mexicans (2002), Winter Poems Along the Rio Grande (2004), and Spring Poems Along the Rio Grande (2007).

Book The Forbidden

  • Author : Benito Pérez Galdós
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2009-03-26
  • ISBN : 144380777X

Download or read book The Forbidden written by Benito Pérez Galdós and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benito Pérez Galdós, considered Spain’s most important novelist after Cervantes, wrote 77 novels, several works of theater and a number of other tomes during his lifetime (1843–1920). His works have been translated into all major languages of the world, and many of his most highly regarded novels, those of the contemporary period, have been translated into English two, three and even four times over. Of the few “contemporary novels” of Galdós that until now have not come to light in English, The Forbidden is certainly among the most noteworthy. The story line concerns a wealthy philanderer, José María Bueno de Guzmán, who attempts to buy the favors of his three beautiful married cousins. He is successful with the first, Eloísa, a grasping materialist who falls deeply in love with him. Then he rejects her in order to attempt to seduce the youngest, Camila. Meanwhile, the third, the pseudo-intellectual María Juana, jealous, seduces José María. But it is Camila, healthy, impetuous and wild, who resists his temptations and holds our attention. The novelist and critic Leopoldo Alas, Galdós’s contemporary, calls her “the most feminine, graceful, lively female character that any modern novelist has painted.” As a naturalistic study, in the manner of Balzac in particular, principal characters of Galdós’s other novels (El doctor Centeno, La de Bringas, La familia de León Roch) become fleetingly visible in The Forbidden. In addition, the entire Bueno de Guzmán family gives evidence of the naturalistic emphasis on heredity: they all display certain physical or mental disorders. Eloísa has a morbid fear of feathers, María Juana often feels that she has a tiny piece of cloth caught in her teeth, José María suffers bouts of depression, an uncle is a kleptomaniac, one of the relatives writes letters to himself, etc. At the same time, this novel shows the foibles of Spanish society where status is determined by one’s associates, by the wearing of finery, and by living on borrowed money. In their history of Spanish literature, Chandler and Schwartz call Galdós “the greatest novelist of the nineteenth century and the only one who deserves to be mentioned in the same breath with great novelists like Balzac, Dickens and Dostoievsky.” The Forbidden, written at the height of the author’s creative powers, is a major work and its publication for an English-speaking audience is long overdue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Through its rich and fascinating collection of documents, Mexico, Slavery, Freedom offers a much-needed window into Mexico’s long history of slavery that will leave readers wanting to learn and discover more. Sierra Silva brilliantly guides his readers through the maze of Mexican archival resources. . . . Through his careful content curation, readers will discover how corruption and discrimination led to persistent enslavement of indigenous Mesoamerican and transpacific peoples despite royal orders to abolish the practice. . . . The rich, detailed-packed introductions--to the book in general and to each chapter--are nonetheless succinct and to the point. Sierra Silva’s . . . editorial approach proves that information and interpretative points are better served in small portions. The documents themselves are the main course. Sierra Silva also recognizes the importance of giving readers both English and Spanish versions of each document in the book. These bilingual transcriptions make Mexico, Slavery, Freedom an equally valuable resource for course instruction in predominantly English-speaking environments, bilingual classrooms, and Spanish-centered courses.” —Mariana Dantas, Ohio University This is the first volume to provide, in dual-language format, selections from primary texts related to the experiences of enslaved Africans, Asians, and their descendants in colonial Mexico.
