Book The 2016 Chignik River Sockeye Salmon Smolt Outmigration

Download or read book The 2016 Chignik River Sockeye Salmon Smolt Outmigration written by Mary E. Loewen and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the results of the sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka smolt monitoring and enumeration project conducted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in the Chignik River system in 2016. The research was designed to estimate population size and age structure of outmigrating smolt, assess fish body condition, collect samples for future genetic stock identification analysis, and provide data for the Chignik River preseason adult sockeye salmon forecast. The abundance of sockeye salmon smolt was estimated using a rotary-screw trap array and mark-recapture techniques. In 2016, 3.5 million sockeye salmon smolt were estimated to have outmigrated from April 21 to June 11. Of these, approximately 10,600 (0.3%) were freshwater-age-0; 1.33 million (37.5%) were freshwater-age-1; 2.19 million (62.1%) were freshwater-age-2; and approximately 1,800 (

Book Chignik River System Sockeye Salmon Smolt Sampling Project Operational Plan 2020 2022

Download or read book Chignik River System Sockeye Salmon Smolt Sampling Project Operational Plan 2020 2022 written by Matthew Olson and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This operational plan describes the procedures for the sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka smolt sampling project conducted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) in the Chignik River system. The project goal is to evaluate and document size and abundance trends of sockeye salmon smolt in the Chignik River system to understand rearing capacity and habitat use. The research is designed to assess age structure, fish body condition, and provide additional context for the adult sockeye salmon forecast. Age structure of the population will be estimated from scales of sockeye salmon smolt collected using a beach seine. Juvenile salmon habitat use will be examined by beach seining in near-shore marine environment. Findings from this project are vital for understanding effects of the commercial fishery and environmental changes occurring in the Chignik River system on the sockeye salmon population.

The research was designed to estimate population size and age structure of outmigrating smolt, assess fish body condition, describe limnetic habitat conditions and forage base in rearing lakes, collect samples for future genetic stock identification analysis, and provide data for the Chignik River preseason adult sockeye salmon forecast. The abundance of sockeye salmon smolt was estimated using a rotary-screw trap array and mark-recapture techniques. In 2015, a total of 9.4 million (95% CI 6.94 million to 11.87 million) sockeye salmon smolt were estimated to have outmigrated from April 17 to June 15. Of these, 133,103 (1.4%) were freshwater-age-0; 7.15 million (76.0%) were freshwater-age-1; 2.11 million (22.4%) were freshwater-age-2; and approximately 11,860 (
