Book excerpt: Comprender al sujeto dentro de las sociedades posmodernas es un reto para los estudiosos de la psicología social, sociología, antropología social, historia social, etnopsicología, pedagogía, entre otros; quizá el problema radica en la frontera de las perspectivas teóricas y metodológicas que no puede asir la evidencia empírica de los nuevos procesos sociopsicológicos que se están elaborando dentro de los grupos sociales y comunidades. Las propuestas pueden ir y venir pero no encontrarán eco si no hay un cambio en la posición epistemológica desde donde se mira el objeto, eso implica un trabajo profundo de reflexión que renueve el espíritu de una época y abra opciones; de ahí la importancia de esta obra que se intitula Sociometría: un método de investigación psicosocial de José Manuel Bezanilla Sánchez Hidalgo. En este texto se entiende el método sociométrico como una posibilidad de mostrar el proceso sutil que se entreteje entre los sujetos y los grupos sociales, evitando reducirlo a la aplicación de un método o una técnica. La advertencia de nuestro autor en su introducción es indispensable, por eso creo necesario poner énfasis en la primera parte del texto donde se presenta la fundamentación epistemológica y metodológica de la sociometría a través de un análisis exhaustivo del pensamiento moreriano comenzando por contextualizar históricamente las ideas que permiten el nacimiento del método sociométrico. Bezanilla menciona que Moreno había vislumbrado la riqueza de la sociometría como método que nos aproxima hacia el proceso de integración de los grupos, el proceso de identidad y pertenencia del sujeto dentro de su grupo a partir de una necesidad psicosocial de su época; aunque esto sólo es un pequeño destello de la riqueza explicativa y metodológica que ofrece la sociometría pues ésta nos aporta elementos para indagar sobre la construcción de la conciencia e inconsciente grupal, la psicodinamia grupal, la genealogía de los grupos, la intencionalidad o thelos grupal, entre otros, que posibilita el surgimiento del yo y el nosotros. El poder metodológico de la sociometría no queda el cuantum, invita a una lectura profunda del proceso grupal; cierto es que la medición es la puerta de acceso pero no su punto de llegada, los deseos de nuestro autor es presentar la medición sociométrica en tiempo real y vivo, es decir, aboga por una vivisección y no una disección grupal. Por esto es que nuestro autor desarrolla ampliamente nociones esenciales que definen la manera de abordar el proceso grupal para evitar malos entendidos. El proceso grupal es espontáneo, los grupos tienen una energeia y una dynamis que regula su constitución y desarrollo, estas propiedades permiten crear soluciones ante situaciones y circunstancias que siempre desembocan en actos inusuales e inesperados que transforman la realidad grupal: la creatividad grupal. En este sentido un grupo social es un proceso continuo que se crea y recrea constantemente a partir de las interrelaciones de sus miembros, pero no como una suma de propiedades individuales sino como una propiedad emergente del proceso grupal: los sujetos son los mismos pero diferentes en los diversos grupos sociales.

Book excerpt: Sociologists and anthropologists have had a long interest in studying the ways in which cultures shaped different patterns of health, disease, and mortality. Social scientists have documented low rates of chronic disease and disability in non-Western societies and have suggested that social stability, cultural homogeneity and social cohesion may play a part in explaining these low rates. On the other hand, in studies of Western societies, social scientists have found that disease and mortality assume different patterns among various ethnic, cultural and social-economic groups. The role of stress, social change and a low degree of cohesion have been suggested, along with other factors as contributing to the variable rates among different social groups. Social cohesion has been implicated in the cause and recovery from both physical and psychological illnesses. Although there has been a large amount of work established the beneficial effects of cohesion on health and well-being, relatively little work has focused on HOW increased social cohesion sustains or improves health. This work is based on the premise that there are risk factors, including social cohesion that regulate health and disease in groups. One of the challenges is how to measure social cohesion – it can be readily observed and experienced but difficult to quantify. A better understanding of how social cohesion works will be valuable to improving group-level interventions.
