Some terms are explained quite briefly while others are given lengthy treatment, according to the further assumptions that some sociological terms can imply. Thus, long entries are given on words, such as authority, consensus, phenomenology, role, social stratification, structuralism, whereas short and succinct entries suffice for words such, as agnate, eidos, or mores. A number of short biographical sketches are also included. The contributors are all scholars working in universities, predominantly in the United Kingdom and the United States. More than a glossary, "A New Dictionary of the Social Sciences" helps the student understand some of the theoretical considerations underlying the use of sociological terms, as well as something of their history, and therefore resembles an encyclopaedia in its scope and depth of information.

I use this glossary to help students in my introductory class learn that sociological "language." This glossary was such a success in my introductory class, that I now that I now use it in all of my sociology courses. In addition to being quizzed on chapter material from a textbook, I also quiz my students over 15 to 30 words from the glossary for each chapter module. Students agree that the aforementioned practise leads to a better understanding of sociology on their part and a greater depth of sociological understanding. It is not easy to compile a glossary of sociological terms, concepts, and processes because the discipline is a living discipline unlike some other scientific areas of study. Its simple goal is to introduce agape into the vocabulary of sociological analysis by demonstrating its potential to demarcate and to interpret social phenomena. Love-agape is presented as a critical concept. On the one hand, love-agape denounces the risks linked to the needs of closed groups, often absolutist and fundamentalist. On the other hand, it represents a concrete reality, lying at the root of a particular type of sociality. A sociality that, rather unconventionally, recognizes differences and distances, but also characterizes their condition of being together, as community founded on the recognition and respect of subjectivity.
