There is nothing Original in it except that it is the formulation and views Of a teacher and student Of the vast field Of sociology. It was prepared to meet the demands of those who have some curiosity about the nature Of society and sociology, but have not a great deal Of time in which to satisfy it. Sufficient references accompany the various chap ters to enable the reader and student to make a larger study Of the subject, and it is hoped that this simple outline will not extinguish any whole some craving for information, but may even whet the appetite for subsequent and more ex tensive investigations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twentieth Century Sociology Nineteenth Century Sociology was characterized by a limited number of problems more or less dogmatically ac cepted and differently resolved in conflicting schools. The initial tendency to link if not to identify sociology with philosophy of history or theory of evolution (as exemplified by Auguste Comte, Herbert Spencer, and even Karl Marx) was overcome only slowly and step by step. The field was marked by eternal discussions between the partisans of order or the admirers of progress; between the defenders of the individual or of Society, contrasted with each other as isolated entities; between the promoters of psychology as against sociology, and vice versa; and among the proponents of a predominating factor in so cial life, such as the geographical, biological, anthropo racial, demographic, technological, and so on (not one of which as a matter of.fact when taken separately belongs to the social reality). These conflicts threatened to com promise the scientific character of early sociological re search. The practice of seeking and formulating socio logical laws on which different sociologists could never agree completed the rather dismal picture of sociology in the first century of its birth. Download or read book The Study of History and Sociology Classic Reprint written by Frank W. Blackmar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of History and Sociology In some institutions these changes have been sudden, in others slow and laborious, owing to lack of resources and other obstacles even more formidable. In this respect it may be said that a young, growing institution like our own, with comparatively few resources, yet working in a new field with a special purpose, has an advantage in outlining a policy, over Older and wealthier institutions; it has the advantage of the experience of other institutions without the obstructions which essentially arise on account of traditional usage. It may more readily adjust its methods and its course of study to the needs of society. Nor must it be inferred that this adjust ment is a transient affair, pandering to the clamors of popular Opinion, for a university must on the one hand be a leader in thought and opinion; on the other, it must supply the de mands of higher education, both in kind and in quantity. And especially should a State university strengthen those branches of instruction that directly aid in the general bene fits of society at large - the welfare of the body politic. In so doing it performs one of its essential functions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Fields and Methods of Sociology Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fields and Methods of Sociology Classic Reprint written by L. L. Bernard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fields and Methods of Sociology His volume is intended to serve as a textbook for advanced T courses in sociology in which the purpose is to survey the various divisions of sociology as this science has developed in the United States in particular, and in all other countries where the subject is taught or studied. It emphasizes especially the sources of materials for investigation, the methods of research, and the processes of generalization in the various fields of sociological science. Present day sociologists are more interested in research than in classification. It is recognized, however, that intelligent research cannot be undertaken to the best advantage without an adequate understanding of the various divisions into which the general science of sociology falls. Consequently, the first part of the volume is devoted to an analysis of the fields and problems of sociology and the second part to sources and methods. While the volume is organized in textbook form, it is expected that it will appeal very largely to the general reader who is searching for a well organized and clear presentation of the subject of sociology in all its aspects. It is believed that the present volume offers the most complete and thoroughgoing analysis and synthesis of sociological content and methodology now available. I wish to emphasize especially the inductive approach of the present treatise. Every chapter is the result of a careful study of the data it treats. Speculative and a priori approaches have been avoided. Consequently each field of sociology has been analyzed realistically as to subject matter, sources and methods and the results are set forth as clearly and as simply and directly as pos sible. Book Sociology and Social Progress

Download or read book Sociology and Social Progress written by Thomas Nixon Carver and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sociology and Social Progress: A Handbook for Students of Sociology It is only partially true that sociology is a new science; It is true that the name has only recently been applied to a definite body of knowledge, and it is still more recently that there has been a group of scholars devoting themselves exclusively to this subject and going by the name of sociologists. But it is not true that human society, the subject of sociological study, has only recently attracted the attention of students. On the contrary, it is one of the oldest subjects of inquiry and speculation. The philosopher, the theologian, the moralist, the man of science, and the economist have all devoted time to this subject, and each has made his contribution to it. Indeed, it is the opinion of many students in this field that some of the most significant contribu tions to our knowledge of society have been made not by writers who profess to be sociologists but by men who have turned their attention to those phases of social life which lie nearest their special fields of inquiry. Such writers have not occupied themselves with problems of nomenclature and classification, but have saved their energies for matters of more vital concern, whereas many of our formal treatises on sociology have been largely concerned with matters more formal than vital. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classics in Sociology: A Course of Selected Reading by Authorities Religion, so far as it receives external expression in human history, exhibits four factors or sides of itself. These factors are ritual, emotion, belief, rationalization. There is definite organized procedure, which is ritual 5 there are definite types of emotional expression 5 there are definitely expressed be liefs 5 and there is the adjustment of these beliefs into a system, internally coherent and coherent with other beliefs. But all these four factors are not Of equal in uence through out all historical epochs. The religious idea emerged gradually into human life, at first barely disengaged from other human interests. The order of the emergence of these factors was in the inverse order of the depth of their religious importance first ritual, then emotion, then belief, then rationalization.
