Aussi s'agit-il d'entreprendre un ensemble de réflexions théoriques répondant au besoin de recentrage, afin de permettre un emploi rigoureux et opératoire de la sociocritique et de susciter le débat sur la problématique du champ littéraire africain au regard de la définition de la sociologie des champs de Pierre Bourdieu. Un outil n'est qu'un moyen; il ne saurait jamais être une fin en soi. Vérité que nous rappelle cette réflexion collective qui passe la sociocritique au crible de la critique, revenant sur ses objectifs et modalités, mais encore ses limites. Et les auteurs de cet opus de livrer un effort intellectuel sans doute sain, qui refuse l'enchaînement aveugle à une école, et qui veut penser la valeur, la pertinence et l'à-propos du recours à une telle démarche interprétative. S'il se veut ainsi éminemment théorique, cet ouvrage n'en demeure pas moins accessible. En cela, il sera particulièrement fécond auprès des jeunes chercheurs qui y trouveront de quoi faire retour sur leur propre pratique herméneutique.

Une profonde leçon d’humanité se dégage de cette trajectoire intellectuelle hors du commun, remarquablement illustrée entre autres par la grande figure de Toni Morrison, fière récipiendaire du prix Nobel de littérature pour l’année 1993.

À Haïti, qui dans son premier siècle d’existence avait surtout perpétué les clivages coloniaux, y compris sur le plan culturel, le créole va faire figure de trait d’union entre le peuple et l’élite. Genre littéraire inconnu en Afrique avant la colonisation, le roman, par sa plasticité et sa « sociabilité », finit par s’imposer comme un genre majeur, puissant véhicule de thèmes aussi forts que l’identité et l’héritage. L’ère des indépendances va lui donner un grand essor, en découpant l’histoire du continent en trois temps : avant, pendant et après la colonisation.
