Download or read book Strangers Ambivalence and Social Theory written by Bülent Diken and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume dwells upon the socio-political problem of "under-representation" at great length within the context of immigration through analysis of Turkish immigrants within the "cosy" country of Denmark on the European Periphery. The main purpose has been to show the fictitious and constructed character of the identities that are normally presupposed and taken for granted. Bülent Diken attempts to "defamiliarize" the familiar notions of the "immigrant" and what is taken for granted in the field of immigration. To counter this, Diken allows the "immigrant" to speak throughout interviews. In addition, the study dwells on local and central state policies and planning. This requires a merger of social theory with research on immigration as well as (social and physical) planning, in this case in a Danish context with an examination on how the application of planning and urban politics are oriented toward immigrants. Together with an interest in political and discursive "strategies", the "tactics" used by immigrants in coping with these strategies are focused on at length.

Download or read book The Bourgeois and the Savage written by Alfonso Maurizio Iacono and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-18 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic text in Italian history of political philosophy, translated into English for the first time, investigates the philosophical and ideological conceptions hidden beneath the modern image of the isolated individual. In The Bourgeois and the Savage, Alfonso Maurizio Iacono reveals that this apparently simple and transparent image is imbued with a profound complexity containing human and social relationships, which are intertwined with relationships of power, domination, inequality, colonisation and servitude. As Karl Marx argued, and as was later confirmed by twentieth-century anthropology, the isolated individual does not stand at the beginning of history; he can emerge only where social relationships are already very developed and where society appears as a tool used for private purposes. Considering the writings of Daniel Defoe, the great French Enlightenment philosopher Turgot, and the father of political economy Adam Smith, The Bourgeois and the Savage critically analyses the process which led to the naturalisation of the image of the isolated man and traces its development and transformation into a still dominant paradigm.
Download or read book Learning Beyond Cognition written by Niels Kryger and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2007-06-11 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning beyond Cognition goes beyond a merely cognitive understanding of learning. The concept denotes the ideological and mental formation of the individual as well as the individual's own shaping of an identity. Learning beyond Cognition expands on the notion of 'Building' and the current debate about citizenship education. The book outlines contemporary educational policies and practices in Europe and other Western countries. The authors analyse dominating discourses and learning practices to identify their social and cultural 'grounding' and potentials. The authors are experienced international scholars. This book is aimed to become an essential resource for researchers, teachers, students and policy-makers who address the current challenges to learning.
Download or read book Decent Work and Unemployment written by Christiana Bagusat and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2010 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of 23 essays on diverse aspects of the complex and challenging concept of "decent work" has its inception in the "Impulses of Salzburg 2009". Questions of decent work and decent unemployment have become especially salient in times of an economic and financial crisis. The establishment of decent working conditions and decent unemployment provisions - a complex matter of securing the right ethical mix of security and incentives - are perceived as major challenges not only for developing and undeveloped countries, which still don't have stable economies and where the rate of poverty and corruption is still high, but also for "developed" societies themselves.
