Book excerpt: This thesis examines the effect of adult intervention in the form of Drama in Education methodology on the dramatic and socio dramatic play of children aged three to six. The research studies the quality of dramatic and sociodramatic play in children prior to intervention and then studies the effect on their play when adults plan and implement drama experiences. The Smilansky Scale for assessing dramatic and sociodramatic play is used a measurement of children{u2019}s engagement, and its application provides quantitative and qualitative information in relation to the impact of drama on children{u2019}s use of the six criterion referenced Smilansky categories of sociodramatic play. The Drama related experiences of Irish students who will ultimately work as educators of children aged three to six is also investigated and shows the extent to which those graduates are prepared to support socio dramatic play behaviour. Conclusions and recommendations are made regarding the provision for socio dramatic play in Early Childhood Education settings in Ireland. Differences between girls{u2019} and boys{u2019} engagement of girls and boys in sociodramatic play emerge in the study and suggestions are made about how to consider this in using Drama with young children. Implications also arise relating to general practice with different abilities and age groups and these are discussed. The importance of working in role as an element of pedagogy is explained. It is linked to its impact on the language and interaction skills of young learners that are the crucial elements of sociodramatic play according to the Smilansky scale. As seen in this study, these are elements of socio dramatic play that many children struggle with, especially when not supported by an adult who can work with them through the medium of Drama.
