The region is characterised by rapidly changing socioeconomic scenario, fast-increasing urbanization and longevity, changes in dietary patterns and decrease in mortality from infectious diseases. Drought, cyclones, floods, rural poverty and deprivation push rural population to flock to cities. Therefore, urbanization can be viewed as a consequence of these factors rather than the result of economic growth. This leads to environmental degradation, poverty and growth of urban slums. Rapidly growing population along with the rapid pace of urbanization and industrialisation puts pressure on the scarce resources including arable land. The food needs of the growing population has entailed considerable damage, including depletion and degradation of natural resources and unsustainable use of land and water resources. The lack of investment in human development indicators, namely education and health, has contributed to underdevelopment of these regions. Without Improving Bilateral Relations Vital Economic Areas Cannot Be Brought Under The Regional Scheme.It Is Found That India Has Got A Special Role In Regional Co-Operation In South Asia Since The Whole Region Is 'Indo-Centric And India Dominated'. Good Neighbourly Relations Incorporating The Ideals And Aspirations Of The Smaller South Asian Countries Would Ulti¬Mately Result In Widening The Scope Of Saarc Regionalism. At The Present Stage 'Deepening' Rather Than 'Widen¬Ing' Should Be Given Priority. The Attempt Should Be To Diminish The Dimensions Of Conflict Rather Than The Outright Elimination Of It. Saarc Is A Compound Of Interests. Settling Of Bilateral Disputes Is Not Mathematically Achievable.

It is widely recognised that globalisation enhanced global trade, and that trade further increased the region’s prosperity. Embracing the view that economists can no longer regard themselves as technocratic guardians of neutral policy advice, the book advocates for a shift in focus from policy reform per se to the more challenging task of implementing institutional reform that will invigorate the capability of the political leadership to bring about rapid, sustained and poverty-reducing growth in South Asia. The central task would be to re-direct the focus of governments in South Asia in order to ensure that the core functions of the state stable, non-distortionary policy climate, a secure foundation of law, investment in basic education, health and infrastructure, protection of the vulnerable and adapting with the climate change are efficiently provided. At the same time, the reform agenda must be sensitive to the goal of ensuring that durable democratic institutions, traditions and values are preserved. This is a fundamental challenge, but one that must be met in order to secure the emergence of a prosperous South Asia in the early part of the twenty-first century. This textbook will be useful for students and researchers in Development Economics, Business Economics, Development Studies and Asian Studies.
